2 2.1 Installation Installation 2.1.1 Upon receipt, the compressor should be removed from its carton and inspected for damage. If it is damaged, contact your Sherwood Distributor. 2.1.2 Check that the voltage (V) and frequency (Hz) shown on the serial plate are suitable for the local supply. If they are not, do not use the compressor, but contact your Sherwood Distributor. 2.1.3 Connect a suitable length of 6.3mm (0.25 ) internal diameter Air Tubing (00172043) from the air outlet of the compressor to the Flame Photometer. Use the Unex Clips (00108718) supplied to secure the tubing. NOTE. Do not use rubber tubing to connect the compressor to your Flame Photometer. Rubber tubing is likely to contain French chalk and other foreign matter, which will block the atomiser. Suitable tubing is available from Sherwood Scientific; refer to Section 4. 2.1.4 A three-core mains cable with IEC plug is required to connect the compressor IEC socket to the a.c. mains supply. Fit a suitable fuse in the plug before connecting to the a.c. supply. 230V 1A HBC type 110V 2A HBC type Switch on at the mains supply socket. Adjust the Flame Photometer as necessary. 2.1.5 For the M855 connect the water inlet on the water separator to a suitable cold water supply and connect the outlet to waste, using the Unex clips supplied. Turn on the water supply so that a flow rate of approximately 0.5 litre/minute is obtained. 851 91 855 Issue 5 21 st January 2010 ECN 589-4 -

3 3.1 General Maintenance The following maintenance procedures should be carried out every 6 months. Turn off compressor and disconnect from the electrical supply and the Flame Photometer before carrying out any maintenance procedure. 3.2 Equipment Required Spanner (wrench), 1/2 (13mm) AF Adjustable spanner (wrench), 1 (25mm) AF Screwdriver, flat bladed, 7mm blade (M855) Screwdriver, cross-head (M851) 3.3 Inlet Filter 3.3.1 M851 To check the inlet filter, remove it from the circuit and note the difference, if any, in pump performance. If it is creating a severe restriction proceed as described in 1 to 4 below: - 3.3.2 M855 To check the inlet filter, switch on compressor, remove filter assembly and note the increase in output pressure on pressure gauge. If the output pressure increases by 0.21kg/cm 2 (3psi) switch off compressor and fit a replacement filter assembly as described below: - 1. Carefully remove the bottom of the filter chamber by pull down on the two tabs to overcome the friction of an O ring seal. 2. Remove the filter element noting the orientation then clean or replace as necessary. 3. To reassemble the inlet filter place the filter element inside the chamber and push the base into the end. 851 91 855 Issue 5 21 st January 2010 ECN 589-5 -

Maintenance Continued. 3.4 Valves and Diaphragm To clean or replace the valves or diaphragm proceed as follows: - 3.4.1 M851 - Remove the two screws securing the diaphragm cover and the two screws securing the filter assembly. M855 - Remove the two screws securing the diaphragm cover, the screw securing the inlet filter and the screw securing the water separator. 3.4.2 Remove the filter assembly including valve covers and water separator as appropriate. 3.4.3 Remove valves from both inlet and outlet, replace if rubbers are worn. 3.4.4 To replace the diaphragm, remove the screw in the centre of the diaphragm. 3.4.5 Remove the diaphragm and separate from the top plate and lower support. 3.4.6 Fit a new diaphragm and re-assemble following 3.4.4 and 3.4.5 in reverse order. 3.4.7 Re-assemble the compressor, replacing the valves, rubber cap up on inlet side. 3.4.8 Re diaphragm cover, filters and water separator as appropriate. 3.4.9 Connect the compressor to the Flame Photometer and then to the a.c. supply. Switch on and check the operation. 851 91 855 Issue 5 21 st January 2010 ECN 589-6 -

Maintenance Continued. 3.5 Pressure Release Valve (M855 only) 3.5.1 Slacken pressure release valve locknut. 3.5.2 With a flat bladed screwdriver unscrew adjuster and remove compression spring and ball. If the ball is difficult to remove, cover the orifice, pinch the air tube and switch on the compressor. The air pressure should move the ball. Switch off the compressor. 3.5.3 Clean the spring and ball with a soap solution. 3.5.4 Clean the valve seat with a soft cloth soaked in soap solution. CAUTION Do not use a metal probe to clean valve seat as it could damage the seat and prevent the compressor working properly. 3.5.5 Rinse valve seat, ball and spring with deionised water. 3.5.6 Replace ball, compression spring and adjuster then re tighten locknut. 3.6 Water Separator (M855 only) 3.6.1 Remove lower nut from the bottom of the water separator. 3.6.2 Ensure the orifice in the sealing plate of this nut is clear, if necessary wash with a dilute detergent solution. Exercise care when cleaning the orifice, as it must not be enlarged. 3.6.3 Withdraw the plastic filter element from the recess in the bottom of the glass bowl, wash it with a dilute detergent solution and rinse with deionised water. 3.6.4 Replace filter element and nut. 3.6.5 Remember to replace drain receptacle where necessary. 851 91 855 Issue 5 21 st January 2010 ECN 589-7 -
