IEEE et&d IEEE Workshop on Electronic Power Transmission and Distribution November 7-9, 2017 Music House, Aalborg, Denmark www.ieee-et-d.org

IEEE PELS and IEEE PES Launch a New Industry- Focused Workshop on Electronic Power Transmission and Distribution Power electronics is changing from a technology that enables renewable generation and energy-efficiency improvement to the foundational technology for grid modernization. electronic power transmission and distribution power grids, which can efficiently manage electricity among powerelectronic-based sources and loads, are being envisioned in the near future. Following the success of the inaugural workshop, the second IEEE Workshop on Electronic Power Transmission and Distribution, jointly sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), will be held 7 8 November 2017 in Aalborg, Denmark. This year s event, organized by Aalborg University, will share more industrial experiences and be more practical. It will feature presentations only, consisting of Executive panel sessions, Invited speeches, and Technical E-poster presentations (including live demonstrations of the work using TV screens in Powerpoint, video, or any other media files) from government, industry, and academia. All presentations will be archived in the IEEE PELS and PES resource centers. The event is open to all. Researchers, engineers, and students from the fields of both power electronics and electric power systems will present and exchange their views on the latest advances in electronic power transmission and distribution technologies. General Chair Frede Blaabjerg Technical Programme Chair Xiongfei Wang

Thursday, November 9, 2017 8:00AM 12:00PM Tutorial on IEEE 1547 Standard Chase Sun, Principal Engineer, the PG&E Grid Integration and Innovation Department. Location Location: Fibigerstraede 16, room 1.101. 12:00PM 1:00PM Lunch 1:00PM 5:00PM Technical tour - 1.7 GW Skagerrak Hybrid LCC- and MMC- HVDC Station E-poster The E-poster is a new form of interactive poster session for better interactions with participants. By utilizing a TV screen and computer to display Powerpoint, video, or any other active media files, the E-poster gives an opportunity for the presenter in the poster sessions to communicate more effectively and it also attracts the interest of attendees. This method of presentation may change the way conferences conduct poster sessions in the future. The detailed requirements for the E-Poster presentation can be found in the author center. Tutorial The IEEE Std. 1547 for Interconnecting Distributed Energy Resources with Electric Power Systems Chase Sun, Principal Engineer, the PG&E Grid Integration and Innovation Department. Due to the increasing amount of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) interconnections with the Electric Power System, the IEEE 1547 standard is going through a major revision to address some of the technical issues associated with high penetration of DERs i. e. grid support functionalities, etc. The participants will learn about the major changes to the IEEE 1547 i. e. voltage regulation, response to abnormal system conditions (including voltage and frequency ride through), power quality, islanding, interoperability, etc. The participants will also learn about the utility concerns/solutions to adopt the revised IEEE 1547 standard.

Technical Tour Technical Tour on 1.7 GW HVDC Converter Station (The system interconnects Norway and Denmark over submarine cables, which includes three LCC- HVDC and one MMC-HVDC). Villum Investigator Award Ceremony It is the first time that VILLUM FOUNDATION allocates grants for 'VILLUM Investigators'. The grants will give experienced and outstanding researchers from both Denmark and abroad the opportunity to focus on the research topic they are most passionate about at a Danish research institution. The objective of this programme is to fund talented researchers who gain the potential to make a significant contribution to science and technology research. By funding the 'Investigators' rather than the projects, the researchers will have the freedom to explore - and if necessary - to change the direction of their research. Moreover, they will have the support to follow their ideas until they see results, even if it takes many years. REliable Power Electronic based Power System (REPEPS) The modern society has to become more energy efficient and use more renewable generation in order to be sustainable - a key technology in this mission is power electronics, which converts electrical energy from one stage to another and the power system is becoming very power electronic based. Three great technology challenges are facing in the future: 1) how to keep a high system reliability when many new power electronic components are introduced into the grid system; 2) the cost from failure, downtime, and maintenance are bottlenecks to further reduce Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) from renewable generation; and 3) development of efficient and reliable power electronics products requiring minimum testing time to validate the life expectancy. Meeting these challenges requires the establishment of a new research platform for design and test of power electronic systems and their integration into the grid for a future REliable Power Electronic based Power System.
