The Ultimate Suspension Company New ideas going forward! 2012 C. Nelms & J.Carr
A team of experts Charan (Jim) Nelms - Owner and Principal George Stonier - Production & Engineering John Kirby - Commercial & Sales Julian Carr - Commercial & Anglo/Sino relations
Charan (Jim) Nelms Charan Nelms has invented and designed a number of suspension systems and products for all performance events for both cars and motorbikes. His designs have won 4 Isle of Man TT races and the National and World Formula Stock Car Racing Championship. Also the press have praised his designs, winning many group tests including the prestigious Motor Cycle News Which Shock Absorber? award
Design from a different perspective TUSC designs are superior to conventional mono-tube and twin tube designs A deep understanding of the hydraulic systems that provide huge gains in performance, adjustability and efficiency
Q Damper System Up to 400% more adjustment than a mono-tube allows for both bump and rebound adjuster to be on the reservoir or base and these can be interfaced with actuators to enable computer control Very high sensitivity across both low speed and high speed (piston velocity) damping
Group test winner Press love the results: dazzling adjustability - rebound damping took the test rig to it s limits
More press plaudits reviewers praise revolutionary technology
Amazing performance A challenge was laid down by Mr. Hasegawa of HKS to demonstrate a race shock absorber at Brands Hatch. In just 4 days the EMC race shock was taken from a concept to test prototype. At Brands Hatch with Mr. Hasegawa and his UK representative, John Kirby, race team Harris Performance, Test Rider Dave Rawlins of Triumph Motorcycles and Telemetry and data logging by PI Research. After the warm up lap Dave set a target time on the YZ750 using the stock Öhlins unit. The EMC Race Shock was installed and replaced the Öhlins unit, did a warm up lap and made a standing start again. The bike was faster by 1.25 seconds.
Technologies Available Hydraulic and Pneumatic Shock Absorbers and steering dampers for all applications: 2 and 4 wheel vehicles, commercial, aviation and industrial Hydraulic Cylinders all applications. Pneumatic Cylinders all applications. Pumps for all applications. Frictionless Brake system all applications. Internal Combustion Engines all applications. The products manufactured from these concepts offer a significant commercial opportunity for the next 21years to any OEM by the virtue that these units work differently and therefore are different in construction and not readily replaced by conventional after-market replacement units. Another advantage is that only traditional manufacturing assets are needed for production.
Shock Absorbers The concept offers an entire range of products for all applications with performance as yet unheard of. Units can achieve efficiencies of 1:5.87 on bump and 1:1.49 on rebound and greater Weight savings 30% and greater compared to a conventional mono-tube. Second stage high performance units boast even greater performance and weight saving and as these products are slimmer and lighter than the conventional mono-tube construction, can be passive, manually adjustable or reactive through computer control. Units have a natural bump to rebound ratio of 1:1 (a zero displacement damper!) which is altered through valving The design allows the unit to be used as stressed member and incorporated into the vehicle chassis. All the valving is external and therefore readily accessible The unit cannot be easily substituted, because a conventional mono-tube unit will be bigger in diameter and may not be readily installable within the confines of the new unit.
Hydraulic & pneumatic cylinders The new series of hydraulic & pneumatic cylinders have similar performance gains to the shock absorbers, being both lighter and smaller in diameter but achieving a longer stroke for example a new unit with a cylinder bore of 100mm can deliver nearly the same output as a conventional unit with a piston of 200mm in diameter, and be up to 50% lighter
Frictionless braking system This new system does away with brake pads and discs and also shoes and drums. The system uses fluids to achieve braking in a fashion similar to how shock absorbers dampen oscillations, Ideal applications are public transport (including trains) and all vehicles including large lorries One significant advantage with this system is its application on underground metro trains as no toxic dust is created in the braking process.
Internal Combustion Engine This new range of engines can satisfy all applications from under 50cc to very large capacities. Variable Compression Ratio technology allowing both spark ignition and combustion ignition within the same engine! Complete flexibility on configuration and requirements (e.g. specific high torque output at low revs) Will run on all types of fuel, i.e.: petrol, diesel and bio-degradable and can be 2 stroke or 4 stroke, self supercharging or cold turbo for motorsport and aeronautical applications. These engines are either single or twin cylinder construction. The dual configurations provide excellent solutions for performance engines without increasing the physical size of the engine but increasing the overall cubic capacity, e.g.: a 1000cc twin cylinder engine can be configured to provide an overall cubic capacity of 1600cc without increasing its overall physical dimensions. Opposed piston configuration with no lateral frictional loads and as such there is no loss of energy of power transfer from one stroke to the other. These engines are light weight modular construction without the conventional connecting rods and crankshaft and hence there is no engine block either! Thus the cost to manufacture these engines is reduced by approximately 40-50%! This technology can also be used to provide an extremely efficient, new design of pump
Research & development Lean practices makes for lower costs. Each product project is given a cellular infrastructure in terms of where the research and development is carried out. When starting the development of the new engine, a workshop with an office was hired for the course of the project and all engineering sub-contracted out to reduce overheads and asset investment. All levels of projects are carried out from concept to certified pre-production prototypes and then eventually to production with full CAD modelling and finite element analysis and a full bill of materials specification & costings.
