FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES ENGINE The Massey Ferguson 6400 Series utilize two powerful engines. Depending on the model, the 6400 Series will be equipped with either a Perkins 1106D diesel engine or the AGCO owned SisuDiesel 66 CTA or 74CTA diesel engine. Both engines are extremely powerful and efficient. Both engines combine tough components with unique design to create power and reliability throughout the life of the tractor. Operators can count on the legacy that has been created by the Perkins name as well as the reliability seen in the SisuDiesel engines. Bosch fuel systems provide the fuel for these high-efficiency engines. The 1106D and the CTA series are Tier III compliant and use the latest Common Rail (CR) technology for power and emissions. Combined with the Electronic Engine Management (EEM), these engines have become a benchmark for agricultural equipment. In addition, Perkins and SisuDiesel have seen improvements in noise reduction technology. Improvements in engine materials and the redesign of noise contributing components have made dramatic improvements. In fact, 6400 Series engines will be up to 5 db(a) quieter than previous high horsepower Massey Ferguson models. FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES PERKINS DIESEL ENGINE The Perkins 1106D engine features common rail electronic fuel injection, wastegate turbocharged aspiration, and air to air inter-cooling. Additional changes include the a reduction in overall noise output of 5dB(A) throughout the RPM range. Though this engine is Tier III compliant, fuel consumption will not significantly change from its previous Tier II predecessor. The 1106D boasts increases in horsepower and torque. These increases come from redesigned intake components, turbocharger geometry, and increased displacement. The Perkins name has long been associated with reliability, economy and power. The new design changes will turn customers heads when discussing fuel consumption, production, and operator comfort. 210-2

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Reinforced Large Capacity Oil Pan The structural features of the Perkins oil pan give added strength to the structural block and adds additional benefits for effective vehicle installation. Changes in the oil pan also help to achieve a tighter turning radius and improved line of sight for the operator. Aluminum Pistons The pistons are made from forged aluminum with a steel insert and are designed to be light weight for better power recovery. The quiescent bowl design aids in a more complete burn, yielding greater fuel efficiencies. 210-3

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Forged Steel Crankshaft The steel crankshaft is balanced for reduced vibration and greater torque back-up. This strong component is also designed for 100% front PTO loads, which offer greater versatility to end users. Structural Block Design The block for the 1106D is scalloped and ribbed. This design adds structural integrity without additional weight. This leaves more opportunity for applications where excessive weight is a factor. For high power applications, simply add weight as needed until the desired power to weight ratio is achieved. High Pressure Common Rail Fuel System All 1106D engines use the proven design of the Perkins High Pressure Common Rail Fuel System. The use of an electronic system gives the operator full control over the engine. Perkins technology has a reputation for reliability, fuel efficiency, ease of maintenance, and exceptional cold starting capability. Electronic systems also help to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions. 210-4

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES SISUDIESEL ENGINES The 6400 series tractors feature SisuDiesel engines. These engines continue the quality and power that have become a highly-regarded feature in Massey Ferguson tractors. The engines are turbocharged and inter-cooled, and feature numerous improvements like reduced emissions, decreased noise level, and Electronic Engine Management 3 (EEM3), which is the most advanced EEM to date. The new Citius series engines are Tier III compliant and feature high pressure Common Rail (CR) fuel injection and 4-valve per cylinder heads for larger gains in torque coverage and engine response. 210-5

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Engine information Plate The engine information plate is attached to the right (warm) side of the engine near the starter. It contains information about the engine such as model, serial number, dyno horsepower, and the person or team by whom it was assembled. All SisuDiesel engines proudly display this feature. These plates ensure that the utmost care and quality went in to the assembly of the engine. Single-Piece Cast Iron Block The robust design of the block adds considerable strength to the engine allowing it to act as a major load bearing portion of the tractor. This reduces the need for an oversized side frame. The result is a tractor with a shorter turning radius. Two, 4-Valve Cylinder Heads Tier III engines feature two, 4-valve cast cylinder heads. The new 4-valve design improves gas exchange approximately 25% over the previous one piece design. The increased gas flow also reduces the pumping requirement, freeing up mechanical power. This design also provides an optimal location for injector placement, in the center of the head vertically above the cylinder. Results are lower emissions and improved fuel burn, which creates more power and less emissions. 210-6

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Cast Aluminum Valve Covers A cast aluminum valve cover protects the valve train from the outside environment. An o-ring seal keeps harmful dust out and precious oil in the engine. This design has had a long history of reliability and durability. Wet Cylinder Liners with Mid Supports SisuDiesel engines feature wet cylinder liners that are centrally supported and replaceable. By efficiently cooling the top end of each cylinder liner, engine heat is reduced, thus allowing greater power. The central support meanwhile reduces vibration by 75%. This reduces wear on the cylinders and cylinder liners, reducing blow-by, oil consumption, and engine noise by 5 db. Fractured Piston Rods The big end of the connecting rod is fracturesplit, making the rough-edged big end stronger and more durable. The connecting rod can be made 17 percent lighter, which reduces vibration and increases the durability of the engine. The rods are then connected by special torx bolts. Reduced rotating mass allows for faster engine rpm rise. 210-7

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Bosch CRIN2 Electronic Fuel Injector Tier III engines use the new, 8-hole, Bosch, solenoid controlled injectors. Each injector is capable of up to 5 different stages, where previous versions only had 1. Reduced noise levels are also a result of this improved precision. Bosh Rotary Fuel Pump The fuel pump used in common rail engines is a fuel lubricated, radial piston pump. The pump responds very quickly and precisely to throttle movements together with EEM3. Injection pressure capacity is very high. The pump provides the correct amount of fuel needed for the high-horsepower requirements. Stanadyne Fuel Filters and Feed Pump Two fuel filters are located on the cool side of the engine. The pre-filter filters to 30 microns and the main filter filters to 5 microns. Fuel is pumped through the filters at a rate up to 40/60 gal/hr (depending on engine model), more than enough to feed the fuel pump. This design is updated from the previous tier II engines. Using two filters increases the tractors ability to remove harmful debris from fuel before entering the engine, and allows for longer filter life, resulting in reduced maintenance costs. 210-8

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Common Rail (CR) Injection System Designed specifically for SisuDiesel engines where fuel is pumped up to high pressure, over 22,000 PSI, in the rail. It is then released by the injectors into the cylinder as required for engine speed/power. This configuration offers more advanced timing of fuel flow. The EEM3 controls the opening, duration, and closing of the injectors for an even quicker response to changing tractor conditions. Electronic Engine Serial Number The electronic engine serial number stores the engine information (serial number, etc.). It also stores engine history for review by technicians. It stores things like load profile, hours, faults, service history, and injector wear counter. This works with the tractor s systems to notify the operator of some faults or assists the technician with needed repairs, reducing service time and increasing time in the field. Inlet Grid Heater Cold starts are assisted with an air intake grid heater. The cold air is heated as it passes by the electrically powered grid. This system is more effective than a glow plug system. 210-9

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Air Intake System The cassette style air cleaner is located at the very front of the tractor inside the single-piece hood. The design allows greater airflow and can hold up to 20% more dust than canister type filters. The series of vortices at the bottom of the housing swirl the larger particles to the outside of the case where they are sucked out through the exhaust. The result is a more powerful, cleaner burning engine with great fuel consumption ratings. Electronic Engine Management 3 (EEM3) All 6400 series tractors feature Electronic Engine Management 3 (EEM3). Developed as a proprietary system, it is the most advanced fuel injection system to date. The main components of the system being the fuel pump, the common rail, the injectors and the ECU. With EEM3 these engines meet the stringent requirements of Tier III standards while improving performance and fuel consumption. Cooling System The expandable cooling system on the 6400 Series incorporates a radiator which has been pre-serviced with antifreeze to 30 F. The cooling system is made up of five coolers: transmission oil, hydraulic oil, radiator, intercooler and A/C condenser. This design aids in cleaning and has greater cooling capacity than previous designs. The simple design is easy to use with the single piece lifting hood. 210-10

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Viscous Fan Drive The Viscous Fan Drive houses an internal clutch which responds to engine temperature. As the engine temperature increases, the clutch engages and makes the fan spin faster. This increases total airflow through the radiator and provides increased cooling capacity. At low engine temperatures, the fan spins very little using almost no horsepower; that power is then available for other functions. Adjustable Preset Engine Speeds The EEM3 gives the operator complete control over the speed of the engine without ever touching the hand throttle. The EEM3 inputs allow the operator to set two preset engine speeds. Engine speeds can be adjusted in increments of 10 rpm. This enables the operator to select a predetermined engine speed at the push of a button. The EEM3 allows adjustment of engine speed independent of the hand throttle location. To determine the exact set engine speed, the Dot Matrix or GTA Console will always show the set A and B speeds. 210-11

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES A-Post Exhaust The location of the exhaust on the 6400 Series helps to reduce interior cab noise, vibration, and obstruction of cab visibility. 210-12

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES DYNA-6 TRANSMISSION The entire 6400 Series features the Dyna-6 transmission. The Dyna-6 is the smoothest shifting semi-powershift on the market today. It offers 24 speeds, forward and reverse, using 4 ranges and 6 powershift speeds within each range. It has 10 of those speeds in the work (2.5-8.0 MPH) range. All of these speeds can be selected without the use of the clutch pedal. Range changes have been automated with electro-hydraulic controls, so the gear linkage and gear levers have been removed. The Dyna-6 has automated clutch and range change action, removing some of the work an operator must perform. There are a few features standard with the Dyna-6. The operator has the option to select full manual shifting (operator must make all changes), speed matching (the tractor automatically select the best powershift for the range selected), or AutoDrive (automatic up and down shifting dependent upon RPM). The AutoDrive selection is based on ground speed, work load, and engine RPM. The shuttle lever on these tractors is superior to the rest of the tractor industry. It allows the operator a full three-function power-reversing lever. The operator can shift up and down, clutch and shuttle all with the left hand. 220-1

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Powershift and Range Change Lever Transmission control is a single T handle control [B] for both the powershift and range changes. All it takes to shift through the powershift speeds is to pulse the lever forward or backwards to powershift up or down. To change ranges, simply press and hold the range button [C] on the side of the control lever, then pulse the control lever forward or backwards. The range selection is indicated on the front of the right hand console [A]. Powershift speeds (A-B-C-D-E-F) are observed in the right hand display on the front dash [D]. B A C D Overdrive: The 24th ratio(4f) in the Dyna-6 is overdrive. When the transmission is in top 24th speed, the engine will automatically reduce rpm to 1950rpm. This will save fuel and unneeded wear and tear on the tractor. Of course this feature is for when work loads are not high. When maximum power is needed, the operator can shift down to 23rd(4E) which will maintain engine speed of 2200RPM. 220-2

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES AutoDrive Controller Since different applications sometimes require different operation of a transmission, the Dyna-6 AutoDrive Controller comes with three main position features, in two modes. This allows the operator to adjust the gearbox to a certain field or road application to obtain the most efficiency. 1. Manual: Allows full manual operation for the operator. The only automatic shifting that will take place is for protection of the transmission from damage due to incorrect gear selection. This setting is not associated with either mode. 2. Speedmatching: Whether in field or road range, the operator will have automatic selection of the right powershift ratio after a manual range change has been made. 3. Auto Drive: Automatic shifting through speeds depending on engine load In field mode (C), AutoDrive automatically shifts up and down, within a selected range. In road mode (B), it automatically shifts up and down through the 6 powershift speeds and the 4 ranges. This is controlled by selecting the engine speed in which the upshifting takes place, between 1600 and 2200. Downshifting will take place in relation to both engine speed and load in order to maximize control and engine braking. Manual Mode (MAN) [A] Partial automation required for transmission security. Road Mode Sector [B] Speed matching on Adjustable Autodrive- 1600 to 2200 RPM Changes ranges and powershift speeds B A C Field Mode Sector [C] Speed matching on Adjustable Autodrive 1600 to 2200 Changes powershift speeds only 220-3

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Speed Matching In speedmatching mode, the tractor has the ability to automatically select the most appropriate Powershift when changing ranges. Example: If traveling in Range 2, Powershift F, when the operator shifts in to Range 3 the transmission will compensate and instead of being in 3F, the transmission will drop back to 3B. It will skip 3A because there is overlap between 2F and 3A. This keeps the speed change minimal and reduces loss of power increasing efficiency. Downshift Speedmatching Automatic Shifting Up-shift Speedmatching The automatic shifting portion of the Autodrive controller has two sections: field and road modes. The operator can set the transmission to up-shift at a pre-determined engine RPM. Field mode only works within the selected range while the Road mode shifts through all powershifts and all ranges (depending on selected presets and Max up-shift speed settings) These settings remove even more of the load on operators, allowing more focus on the job at hand. Reduced fatigue, increased production, and efficiency increases are all benefits of the Dyna-6 transmission. Speed 3E @ 2100 RPM Speed 3E @ 2100 RPM Speed 3B @ 1700 RPM 220-4

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Dot Matrix All semi-powershift equipped tractors come with the Dot Matrix screen. Radar and electronic valves are still optional. This system includes screens for adjustment and customization screens related to transmission operation. Working Screen Like other models with Dot Matrix, the working screen will allow you to observe travel speed, PTO speed, wheel slip, and forward/reverse shuttle ratios. This works well in many PTO applications since the operator doesn t need to flip through all the screens to get the information needed. Take Off Speeds Setting take off speeds is quick and easy. All the operator needs to do is fully depress the clutch in and hold. Next, press the range change button and hold. Then pulse the three function shuttle lever forward to the preset range and powershift speed desired. Pulse the three function shuttle lever backwards to set the reverse speed. Both forward and reverse must stay in the same range. Max take off speed is 3F. This gives operators more choices for a variety of jobs. 1300 2000 2C SPD 2A 220-5

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES FRAME AND AXLES The 6400 series tractors feature a tested, proven design on their rear differential, brakes, and final drives. The rear differential lock can be electro hydraulically engaged with the use of a rocker switch located on the right console to ensure a proper, smooth engagement. This tractor series does not have a full frame, as all the major components are designed to be part of the tractor structure. Side rails are available for applications requiring the mounting of tanks or other components to the tractor, but they are not needed for loader applications. The 6400 series tractors have smooth progressive braking supplied by a wet, rear disc braking system. This system consists of ring pistons, brake discs, and steel backing plates. In addition, the brake discs are immersed in hydraulic oil to keep the discs lubricated and cool. Independent suspended pedals operate the individual turning brakes. For transport, the pedals can be latched together to provide equal braking effort to each wheel. Dual brake actuation will electro-hydraulically engage the PFA (Power Front Axle) clutch. In addition, 6400 series tractors feature a parking brake as standard equipment. The park brake is engaged by a lever to the left of the seat. 230-1

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Rear Wet Disc Brakes Wet rear discs brakes provide smooth, progressive, fade free braking. The wet system keeps the discs cool during operation which maintains constant braking power and reduces fade. It also reduces wear to provide for a long service life and decreased maintenance. Automatic Four Wheel Braking When both brake pedals are pressed simultaneously, the PFA clutch will engage, having a four wheel braking effect. This effectively ties all four wheels together for greater breaking capacity. This feature increases operator safety when towing heavy loads. 230-2

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Park Brake The manual parking brake on 6400 series tractors operates independently of other tractor systems. This simple system provides a greater margin of safety, and is easy to use. An optional electronic park brake is now available. Differential Locks The differential locks on the 6400 series tractors are controlled by a convenient rocker switch located on the right console. This switch provides quick, convenient access for the operator to engage the differential locks when needed. When engaged all powered axles will distribute power equally to each wheel, increasing pulling ability. In PFA configurations, the front differential features a locking mechanism so operators enjoy a true 4wd tractor. This increased productivity, and reduces wheel slip. 230-3

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Rear Axle Reduction Units The rear axle reduction units for the 6400 series tractors are a large inboard style. The units use hydraulic oil for lubrication, which is common with the transmission, differential, and hydraulics. The large oil bath provides excellent lubrication, superior cooling, and high load capacities. Flanged Rear Axle The flanged rear axle is standard for the 6465 and 6475. This economical option has proven to be strong and reliable. It is designed for use in single wheel applications only. 230-4

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Bar Axles 6480-6499 model tractors are equipped with large 82mm to 110mm diameter bar axles. The rear bar axles are available in either a 88, 92, 98 and 118, depending on the model. This size axle provides wider rear wheel tread width adjustments, and also provides extra space for dual wheel applications. Furthermore, the added strength of the larger axle provides improved performance in high torque application. Powered Front Axle 6400 series tractors are available factory installed with a Powered Front Axle (PFA). The front axle is matched for the horsepower and chassis size of each tractor model. A single piece of cast-iron makes up the center housing. Heavy outboard planetary housings with high load carrying capacities. A maximum front wheel turn angle of 55 degrees and axle oscillation of +/-11 degrees maintains positive tire to ground contact. For additional strength and protection, all PFA equipped tractors feature a center line drive. The front axle drive engages on-the-go as needed, by use of a rocker switch on the right hand console. 230-5

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Single Center Pin Frame Mount This feature provides a single mounting point for the front axle. In addition to allowing a full range of motion, the single mount reduces maintenance time by having a single service point. Shielded Centerline Drive The shielded centerline drive allows for a reduction in the total number of universal joints in the drive system. This reduces maintenance time and potential wear points. Two-Wheel Drive Front Axle The heavy duty 2wd front axles are a box-inbox design. Track widths are easily adjustable in 4 inch increments fitting most row spacing used today. The axle is gusseted in high stress points for greater load bearing capacities. 230-6

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES 55 Maximum Steering Angle A tight 55 steering angle allows the 6400 series to maintain a tight turning radius. This wide turning angle also allows the tractor greater maneuverability in tight spaces. Front Fenders Optional fixed or pivoting (shown) front fenders can be equipped. Front fenders deflect debris coming from the front tires and reduce the chances of the material coming in contact with the tractor cab or impacting other traffic during transport. It is recommended that you order fenders the same width or wider than the front tires. 230-7

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Suspended Front Axle Front axle suspension is an option to the PFA on 6400 series tractors. The key advantage of the front axle suspension system is the increased ground contact it provides by reducing wheel slip and power hop. When the tractor encounters rough terrain, the front axle will remain on the ground pulling the tractor rather than hopping and allowing the wheels to spin freely. In addition, the front suspension provides greater steering control and reduces fore and aft pitching when towing heavy loads. FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Engine Oil Fill The engine oil fill is located on the right-hand side of the engine. This fill point is just below the removable side panel. A large opening and low proximity to the ground makes for quick and convenient fillings when necessary. Cooling Package The cooling package for all 6400 series tractors contains 4 coolers: engine coolant, hydraulic oil, inter-cooler, and air conditioner condenser. The package is an expandable design which allows more access than any other package on the market today. Two latches release the package and gas charged dampeners assist the expansion process. 290-4

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Cab Air Filter Access A convenient hatch located on the left side of the cab roof provides quick access to the cab air filter. This location provides access to the filter from outside the operator area and eliminates contamination of the cab during removal. This provides a clean comfortable operator environment. Ground-Level Fueling The fuel tank can be filled from the left side of the cab while standing at ground level. The fuel inlet on the tank is oversized to allow for proper tank venting and prevent splash-back. Removable Toolbox A plastic toolbox, molded into the fuel tank, provides convenient, weather resistant storage for tools and field supplies. The toolbox is equipped with a locking hasp for security. Another locking hasp secures the toolbox to the tractor. By unlatching one hasp, the toolbox is easily removed from the tank for any needed task. 290-5

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES TIRES Massey Ferguson 6400 Series tractors use the proven technology of Michelin Tires. Michelin provides a wide range of tire sizes to meet almost any application. From narrow row crop tires to high capacity flotation tires, Michelin has the tires to meet your needs. The taller R1W lug design on the Michelin tire provides continuous gripping power as the tire wears. In addition, a greater sidewall flexing zone allows the tire to put more tread on the ground. This larger footprint increases flotation and provides greater traction. Finally, Michelin tires are approved for use above 25 mph, even under full load. * The addition of Michelin tires to your Massey Ferguson tractors will provide increased efficiency, reduced slippage, and prolonged tire wear. * Tires must be inflated properly. Please read the Agriculture Tire Data Book by Michelin or go to www.michelinag.com for complete details and proper inflations values. 295-1

FEATURES AND BENEFITS MASSEY FERGUSON 6400 SERIES Radial Ag Tires All Michelin Ag tires are of a radial design. The advantaged of a radial tire over a bias ply tire is the ability to put a larger and more consistent footprint on the ground. Most bias ply tires have an oval shape footprint while radial tires have a rectangular footprint. Lug Depth The tread type for a Michelin Agribib tire is commonly referred to as R1-W. These tires have a taller lug than the R1 tires. Michelin has designed a sharp vertical lug for the Agribib. This allows the tire to maintain traction even when the tire has only 30% of the tread left. This translates to higher production over a longer life than competitive tires. Tire Pressure Michelin radial Ag tires are designed to be operated at air pressures lower than previous tires. These lower pressures allow the footprint of the tire to lengthen providing more traction and less compaction. Often, when a Michelin tire is properly inflated it may appear low or flat. It is important to review the tire s inflations chart from Michelin to determine the proper air pressure. 295-2
