Service Bulletin 16-009 February 12, 2016 03177 Version 1 Vibration Felt in Floor at Highway Speed AFFECTED VEHICLES Year Model Trim VIN Range 2015 TLX AWD 19UUB3F..FA000001 thru 19UUB3F..FA004363 BACKGROUND While driving at highway speeds (55 mph and above), there is a low-frequency rumble that can be heard, or a vibration/buzz that can be felt in your legs that comes through the seat and floor. This vibration is typically not felt at speeds under 55 mph and is not the same feeling as a tire imbalance. PROBABLE CAUSE There may be an assembly imbalance between the rear differential and the propeller shaft. CORRECTIVE ACTION Disconnect and rotate the rear differential flange 90 degrees counterclockwise and replace the propeller shaft bolts. PARTS INFORMATION Part Name Part Number Quantity Propeller Shaft Flange Bolts 90113-S10-000 4 WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION The normal warranty applies. Operation Number Description Flat Rate Time Defect Code Symptom Code Template ID Failed Part Number 2191Z9 Index the differential flange and replace the propeller shaft flange bolts. Includes test-drive. 1.1 hrs 08001 04217 16-009N 40100-TZ7-A02 Skill Level: Repair Technician DIAGNOSIS Test-drive the vehicle at highway speeds before beginning repairs. Judge the vibration level and identify its speed range. You will test-drive again after the repair to confirm the vibration level is slightly less, same, or more. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Put the vehicle into car wash mode, which enables the transmission to remain in Neutral for 15 minutes and the propeller shaft to turn freely. 2. Raise the vehicle on a lift. CLIENT INFORMATION: The information in this bulletin is intended for use only by skilled technicians who have the proper tools, equipment, and training to correctly and safely maintain your vehicle. These procedures should not be attempted by do-it-yourselfers, and you should not assume this bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle has the condition described. 3. Rotate the No. 2 propeller shaft at the rear differential end until the factory reference marks are visible. Inspect the No. 2 propeller shaft for a paint mark 90 degrees counterclockwise from the factory reference marks. If there is a paint mark on the propeller shaft different from the factory reference marks, stop. This procedure has already been done to this vehicle. Continue with normal troubleshooting to address the existing vibration concern. If there is no extra mark on the propeller shaft, go to step 4. Page 2 of 6
4. Inspect the rear differential serial number and confirm it is within the affected serial range: If the serial number is higher than HTM0D-8005602, stop. This bulletin does not apply. If the serial number is HTM0D-8005602 or lower, go to step 5. 5. Rotate the No. 2 propeller shaft so that the factory reference marks are at the 12 o clock position. Then, remove the lower two propeller shaft flange bolts. Page 3 of 6
6. Rotate the No. 2 propeller shaft again until the factory reference marks are at the 6 o clock position. Then, remove the two remaining propeller shaft flange bolts. 7. Turn the rear differential flange 90 degrees counterclockwise (to the left). NOTE: Do not turn the propeller shaft. Page 4 of 6
8. Install the original propeller shaft bolts (temporary condition). Torque to 32 N m (24 lb-ft). NOTE: After the test-drive, the bolts will be replaced. 9. Test-drive the vehicle at highway speeds to confirm the vibration level did not increase. If the vibration is same or less from this repair, go to the next step. If the vibration is more, return the rear differential flange to its original position. Repeat steps 1 2 and steps 5 6. Turn the rear differential flange 90 degrees clockwise (to the right) and install the new flange bolts. Torque to 32 N m (24 lb-ft). NOTE: If the vibration is unaffected by this repair, continue with normal troubleshooting to address the existing vibration concern. 10. Put the vehicle into car wash mode, which enables transmission to remain in Neutral for 15 minutes and the propeller shaft to turn. 11. Raise the vehicle on a lift. Page 5 of 6
12. Place a paint mark on the No. 2 propeller shaft 90 degrees counterclockwise from the reference mark on the propeller shaft to indicate that the rear differential flange has been moved. NOTE: Do not mark the rear differential flange because it may not be detectable in the future. Any marking or label in this location is known to get very dirty or wear off and is no longer visible. Marking the propeller shaft will indicate this procedure has been done and help to prevent it from being done again. 13. Remove the original flange bolts and install the new flange bolts. Torque to 32 N m (24 lb-ft). END Page 6 of 6
