INTRODUCTION The first three Rhino Craft were built in 2003 for a Nigerian diving contractor needing a relatively indestructible workboat for use in offshore bow-catchers. Thirteen years later these original craft are still in operation and in good working order. HDPE structures and pipelines have been successfully used in marine environments for periods exceeding 30 years without showing signs of deterioration. If these HDPE Rhino Craft are damaged as a result of extreme abuse they can be effectively repaired by semi-skilled personnel. Based on our experience we contend that with reasonable maintenance Rhino Craft could continue to be employed as robust offshore work-boats for periods exceeding 30 years. Rhino Craft are primarily fabricated from ultra-violet resistant High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and have been designed, developed and tested to create a robust and virtually indestructible workboat for use with outboard motors as well as inboard diesels with stern drives or jet drives. The Rhino Craft are manufactured at the Rhino Marine Products (Pty) Ltd factory in Cape Town. Rhino Marine are ISO 9001:2015 compliant and are undergoing CE Class B classification. The craft generally are designed to comply with the IMCA recommendations for offshore use. Though we have a standard range of craft we are well geared for undertaking customised and specialised designs to suit client needs. Generally the Rhino Craft are supplied as either a heavy duty (HD) model or an extra heavy duty (EHD) model. The hulls have been proven in harsh offshore conditions impacting with solid and floating steel structures and the EHD models incorporate a customised forepeak structure for engaging into standardised offshore bow-catcher boat landings. Over the 13 years that the Rhino Craft range of boats has been evolving we have continually improved our products to better suit client needs. The new designs are developed in co-operation with our Naval Architects Icarus Marine and in conjunction with our sister company Wale Marine who have over 25 years of offshore design and contracting experience. The hulls and sponsons which are foam filled are made from extrusion welded HDPE pipe and sheet, and the craft generally incorporate side seating with up-stand gunnels, lifting pad-eyes, deck lashing pad eyes, consoles and lockers. The EHD craft are fitted with a forepeak incorporating a bow step and hand rail system that is compatible with conventional offshore bow-catchers. The craft are fitted with bowstorage/chain lockers, rubber D-fenders, pontoon roping and scupper flaps for the self-draining decks. The forepeaks of the Rhino Craft EHD range, which is designed for offshore bow-catchers, has been specifically designed to be welded atop the main hull structure in such a way that should the craft be subjected to extreme over-loading then the forepeak itself will be damaged without impairing the structural integrity of the hull itself. In the event of this type of damage to the forepeak welded repair works would generally be easy to effect by suitable semi-skilled personnel. Rhino Craft are designed to operate effectively in extreme offshore conditions where GRP would shatter, aluminium would tear and conventional RIB s would destruct. To cater for this our lifting pad-eyes are embedded into the hull structure such that it is impossible for the pad-eye plate to be ripped out. Besides this the lifting pad-eyes are reinforced with internal stainless steel bosses and doubler plates on either side. The bosses and doubler plates are close tolerance machined fits with auxiliary stainless steel bolts that are compositely designed with the parent HDPE plate such that the mode of failure requires that the boss and the bolts are simultaneously sheared through the HDPE plate to give a high bearing resistance coupled with a significant and progressive shear deformation before failure occurs. For good offshore lifting practice it is necessary that not only is there sufficient factor of safety relating to pad-eye failure, but also that it is possible to undertake periodical inspections to ensure that the pad-eyes have not been adversely overloaded. The system employed by Rhino Craft for the reinforced pad-eyes allows for visual testing to suffice as there will be no impairment of the padeye integrity unless there is significant visually identifiable plastic deformation that has taken place. Our standard lifting 3 Te SWL pad-eyes are designed to be used in conjunction with a standard 8.5 Te SWL safety bow shackles. At Rhino Marine we have carried out extensive empirical load testing to ensure the integrity of our lifting pad-eye systems. A photograph and an exploded view of our standard 3 Te SWL pad-eye together with a deformed test sample that has been subjected to a test load of 10 Tonnes is shown below in Fig 1. RHINO 600 RANGE The Rhino 600 can be loaded for shipment into a standard 6-meter container. It is designed for use with single or twin outboard motors. It can be supplied for a tiller operated motor, or fitted with a console and skippers seat arrangement. In the lower picture above the HD is on the left and EHD is on the right. 600 HD: A relatively light, cost effective and easily transportable general purpose high payload work boat fitted with single bow fender, mooring cleats and HDPE side rubbing strakes. This is our entry-level model that has the robust properties of our HDPE hulls but is a cheaper alternative than the EHD model. 600 EHD: A heavy-duty offshore workboat designed for use with typical offshore bow catcher boat landing structures. The EHD is fitted with forepeak and double bow fendering, side rubbing strake and heavy-duty bollards. Stainless steel forepeak step up handrails. RHINO 750 RANGE The Rhino 750 (bottom two pictures of set of four photographs shown above) can be supplied as HD or EHD models. It is a readily transportable boat that can fit upright inside a standard 12 metre container that was introduced in 2015 as a hybrid to replace the previous 690 narrow beam (top left) boats and the 800 broad beam boats (top right). Relative to the older Rhino Craft, by effectively reducing the cross-section of the pipe sponsons and relocating them more optimally we were able to achieve a relatively large deck space whilst keeping within a standard container width for convenient transport and shipping. In essence we have redesigned the craft to get greater weight efficiency, a significantly increased payload and a more stable high performance hull. It is an ideal platform for smaller SRP systems. The Rhino 750 can be powered by a single tiller outboard or twin outboard motors with console arrangement or it can be supplied with inboard diesel motor matched with water jet drive or stern drive systems. We can also supply the craft with an aluminium wheelhouse in place of console alternatives. This container transportable narrow beam hull concept can be extended in length to provide more space and payload as presented on the 850 and 950 below. RHINO 850 RANGE The Rhino 850 has approximately 500 kg more payload capacity than the 750 workboat and can be readily fitted into a standard 12 metre container as well as being road trailer transportable. This craft is well suited for use as a general work boat, Dive SRP boat, Military/Security Patrol boat (see page 10) or a personnel transfer boat (18 PAX - see bottom left above). Under heavily laden conditions (as per picture above) with twin 150 HP outboards this craft has a top speed of 37 knots and handles extremely well. RHINO 950 RANGE The 950 range of Rhino Craft includes a narrow beam hull shape (2.3 m wide) for container transport and a broader beam (2.8 m wide) for flat-rack transport. The narrow beam craft is a longer version of the 750 and 850 presented above and is suitable as a general purpose high payload work boat, SRP boat or personnel transfer boat (21 PAX see picture top right below). This 950 HD narrow beam has a payload capacity of over 3 tonnes. The broad beam 950 Rhino (see photographs above) has greater space and payload. RHINO 1050 RANGE The 1050 Range of Rhino Craft are currently under development (January 2016). These craft are approximately 3m in width and are typically suitable for use with outboard motors as inland/coastal water personnel transfer boats (water taxis) and fire-fighting (FiFi) boats. The inboard versions are suitable for offshore use as larger daughter craft work-boats, cabin boats for SRP operations and long range offshore personnel transfer boats. Typical renditions of the 1050 outboard FiFi boat and the 40 PAX water ferry are presented in the computer generated images below. For offshore use the 1050 cabin boats (with optional air conditioning) are designed to accommodate twin inboard diesels and jet drives (either twin 315 HP or 440 HP Yanmar marine diesels).
