Chevrolet Cobalt Short Shifter Installation Manual Pull shift boot down on the shifter shaft. Pull up on the shift knob to remove it. It requires some force. Remove the ebrake console, shifter console and shift boot by pulling up on them, they are clipped down. Disconnect the electrical connection underneath the console before removing it from the car. Remove both side panels pictured at the bottom of the picture. Remove the two screws on each sides behing those panels as well as the two screws on the center console behind the shifter assembly. Remove the two screws on each side of the rear of the console, behind the seats. Remove the complete center console from the car. If there is a wire harness connected to the shifter assembly, unclip it from the assembly. Place the shifter in 4 th gear prior to removal of the shifter assembly from the car.
Pry the shifter cables out of the shifter assembly (assembly shown out of the car in the pictures for clarity). You can lightly rotate them while pulling up to disconnect them from the assembly. Use a flat head screwdriver to disconnect both shifter cables from the cable attachments as pictured. The grey part and white part on the attachments needs to go up as pictured for the cables to be free. Remove the 4 bolts at each corner of the shifter assembly, using a 13 mm socket with a ratchet.
You can now remove the shifter assembly from the car to remove the stock shifter and install the short shifter. With a flat head screwdriver, remove the u-shaped clip as pictured. Locate the plastic trim piece on top of the shifter and rotate it counter clockwise until it shows resistance. This piece is held by three tabs that you will need to pry with a flat head screwdriver and lift up one after the other as pictured.
Remove this trim from the shifter assembly. Remove the plastic pivot pin from the side arm of the shifter assembly. You will need to hammer it out from the inside of the assembly to remove it from the outside as pictured.
You can now remove the shifter from the assembly. Remove the o-ring and big plastic bushing from the stock shifter and install them on the BPS short shifter. Make sure to grease the main pivot ball on the short shifter before installing the cup.
Remove the small plastic cup from the side arm and install it on the short shifter. Make sure to grease the pivot ball on the short shifter before installing the cup.
Remove the cable attachment from the shifter and install it on the BPS short shifter, making sure to grease the bottom pivot cup on the shifter before. Remove the stock rubber base bushings and rubber inserts from the assembly by prying them out with a flat head screwdriver.
When re-installing the shifter assembly in the car, place the provided aluminum base bushings on the 4 studs where the shifter assembly is installed. Place the bushings with the larger smaller diameter facing up, the assembly will sit on that smaller diameter. The washer goes on top of the shifter assembly once it s installed, the nut can be tightened over the washer.
Prior to installing the short shifter back in the shifter assembly, you have to cut a portion of the shifter assembly to clear the shifter. This part is shown in the following picture. You can use a rotary cutting tool or a simple saw blade to cut this portion off. You can now install the short shifter in the assembly by reversing the previous steps and install the complete assembly back in the car. Do not forget the base bushings as previously stated. If you also bought a BPS shift knob, please refer to the shift knob installation manual. You will also need to install the provided boot retainer on the shifter shaft prior to re-installing the boot and console. If you have the stock shift knob, you do not need the provided boot retainer as it installs on the short shifter exactly like on the stock shifter. The height of the shift knob can be adjusted as per the shift knob installation manual. Once properly installed, you can secure the boot retainer to the shifter using the set screw and install the shift boot on it. Re-install all the interior panels and center console by reverting the first steps. Installation of the BPS Chevrolet Cobalt is completed!
