Installation Manual TWM Performance Full replacement short shifter assembly 2006+ Civic all trims and models Begin the installation by parking on a flat surface, as you will have to engage and disengage the hand brake and shift from gears to neutral. If you cannot do so and are obliged to install the short shifter on a slightly inclined surface, place wooden blocks in front or behind the wheels to prevent the car from moving while you re working. Estimated Installation Time: 45 minutes Tools required: 13 mm wrench 14 mm wrench 12 mm socket 6 extension Ratchet Flat head screw driver Round edge visegrips (suggested)
1. Looking down at the shift knob, turn the shift knob lock nut clockwise, using a 14 mm wrench to loosen it 2. Remove the shift knob by rotating it counter clock-wise and remove the nut from the shifter shaft. Put them aside in a safe place for re-install later. 3. Pull up on the shifter bezel to remove it and put it in a safe place.
4. Hold the rear of the plastic part surrounding the shifter and pull it up and then back toward you to remove it. Put it aside for re-install later. 5. Open the centre console and unscrew the 2 screws in the base of the storage compartment. Remove the 2 screws at the front of the console in front of the shift assembly. 6. Remove the panel on the passenger side (right side) of the centre console. It can be removed simply by pulling down and pulling outward.
7. Removal of the panel in the previous step exposes a push clip on the passenger side which must be removed. Pull the centre portion of the push clip to pop it out and remove it. A small flat head screwdriver may be used to pop out the centre portion, then the clip can be slid out of the hole and removed. 8. There is also a push clip on the driver s side of the centre console located at the front near the pedals. Remove the push clip on the driver s side in the same manner as the one you removed on the passenger side. Unclip the wiring harness to the right of the shifter a few inches back, the centre console is now free to be removed from the car. 9. Spread the metal clip open on the bottom shifter cable and pull the cable down to free it from the shifter. Repeat the same operation for the driver s side shifter cable.
10. With the centre console out of the car, unclip both shifter cables from the stock shifter assembly. From the passenger side, you can access the bottom shifter cable. Locate where the cable is attached to the shifter assembly and rotate the mounting point of the cable counterclockwise as pictured to the left. This step might require some force as the shifter cables are tight on the assembly. A round edge visegrip can also be used to rotate the cable free. Once the cable is unclipped from the shifter assembly, lightly pull on it toward the passenger side to completely remove the cable from the assembly. 11. From the driver side, the same procedure needs to be done to unclip the side shifter cable from the shifter assembly. Rotate the cable counter clockwise as pictured to the left. It also might require some force as the shifter cables are solidly clipped on the shifter assembly. Once the cable is unclipped from the shifter assembly, lightly pull on it toward the driver s side to completely remove the cable from the assembly.
12. You can also use a round edge visegrip to remove the shifter cables from the assembly if they are too tight to be removed by hand. 13. Using a 12 mm socket and ratchet with a 6 extension, remove the 3 bolts holding down the shift assembly. Once the bolts are unscrewed, you can remove the stock shifter assembly from the car. Put the bolts aside in a safe place for re-install later with the TWM Performance short shifter assembly. 14. Push the rubber bushings out of the stock shifter assembly. First, push the metal sleeve out of the rubber grommet with your finger, then remove the rubber grommet by pushing it through the shifter assembly with a flat head screw driver. Re-install them in the TWM Performance short shifter assembly. If you purchased your short shifter with the upgraded TWM aluminium base bushings, the rubber bushings will not be re-installed, however they should be kept in case you revert back to stock in the future.
15. Re-install the stock rubber bushings in the TWM short shifter assembly. Begin with the rubber part as pictured to the left. 16. Once the rubber bushing is all the way in, insert the metal sleeves in the bushings as pictured to the left. 17. Remove the spring from the stock shifter assembly as pictured to the left to re-install it on the TWM short shifter assembly. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the spring off the stock assembly.
18. Continue removing the spring from the stock shifter assembly using long nose pliers. 19. Re-install the spring on the TWM short shifter assembly as pictured to the left. Apply some white lithium based grease on the metal tab where the spring legs will be sitting before installing the spring. Make sure both legs of the spring are correctly installed over the metal tab on the short shifter. To do so, you can use a flat head screwdriver to pry the spring legs over the metal tab. 20. Install the TWM short shifter assembly inside the car in place of the stock shifter assembly. Make sure to run the bottom shifter cable inside the shifter assembly before bolting it down. If you purchased your short shifter with the upgraded aluminum base bushings, place them under the shifter assembly with the smaller diameter facing up. Make sure the smaller diameter face is correctly aligned in the shifter assembly specific hole before tightening it down. Bolt the assembly down in place
21. Connect both shifter cables plastic housings on the TWM short shifter assembly by rotating clockwise and pushing toward the center of the car. Pictured to the left is the driver side cable getting connected on the TWM short shifter. 22. Pictured to the left is the passenger side cable getting connected to the TWM short shifter. Make sure both cables are clipped all the way on to the short shifter assembly. 23. Clip the driver side shifter cable back on the TWM short shifter as pictured to the left.
24. Clip the passenger side shifter cable back on the TWM short shifter as pictured to the left. 25. Re-install the center console by reverting steps 8 to 5. Once the console is re-installed, engage the shifter in the upper gears (1 st, 3 rd and 5 th ). If the plastic part of the shifter cable hits the plastic guide on the center console, use wire-cutting pliers to cut the portion of the plastic guide that is highlighted on the picture. 26. The installation is completed, reinstall the panels, shift boot and shift knob by reverting steps 1 to 8.
