Vehicle Sharing for Resilient Cities U-Haul Truck Share 24/7 November 14, 2017 Dr. Allan Yang, Chief Sustainability Scientist U-Haul International Brad Pruitt, President U-Haul Company of Charlotte

Founded in 1945 by a Navy veteran and his wife, U-Haul is a family owned and operated company comprising the largest network of Truck Share members in the world.

A Sharing Business Since 1945 U-Haul has 72 years of experience and expertise utilizing a sharing business model. The Company was founded as WWII was ending and raw materials were in short-supply and veterans and their families were moving towards a new life. U-Haul maintains the same premise since its inception that the division of use and specialization of ownership are good for the moving public. Sharing our equipment with as many customers as possible allows U-Haul to keep the customer s costs low while reducing the need for more privately owned large capacity vehicles in the community.

Truck Sharing: Essential to the Public Transportation Infrastructure If access to U-Haul equipment is convenient, DIYers drive a shorter distance to pick-up and return equipment. LESS CO 2 in the ATMOSPHERE If U-Haul equipment is close to public transportation, more people use it, resulting in greater economic and social impact. Fifty percent of U-Haul customers near public transportation use it to complete a U-Haul move. Increased Public Transportation RIDERSHIP and fare REVENUE

U-Haul Truck Sharing is the Sustainable Option Residents sharing one properly sized U-Haul truck will eliminate numerous trips with a personal pickup truck or other vehicle, reducing emissions and minimizing traffic congestion. Drivers tend to plan trips more carefully and drive less when they pay for mileage and are held to a specific reservation. U-Haul neighborhood truck sharing dealers are conveniently located to ensures less customer travel, less CO 2 emissions into the air and less traffic congestion.

Over time, every U-Haul vehicle placed in a community serves as a potential substitute for 19 personally owned large-capacity vehicles. ~Dr. Allan Yang, U-Haul chief sustainability scientist

What is U-Haul Truck Share 24/7? Secure. A streamlined process for sharing vans and trucks completed entirely on a customer s mobile device. Convenient. Allows customers to pick-up and return trucks on their schedule 24 hours a day. No attendant needed. Innovative. As the industry-leader, U-Haul developed a proprietary software and technology platform founded on the training and best practices of law enforcement and industry experts.

Leading the Industry with Live Verification U-Haul is the only company across the car share and truck share industries that vets each unmanned transaction. Trained specialists use live verification to confirm the identity of a customer and evaluate potential impairment in real-time for every transaction 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This industry can do better than an annual or one time background check on a person. That talks about what the person has done or hasn t done in the past. What our system attempts to do is evaluate what they are going to do in the present. Stuart Shoen, U-Haul executive vice president

U-Haul is the World s Largest Truck Sharing Company U-Haul has 150,000 vehicles serving the DIY moving public in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. 21,750 unique retail locations. More than 20,000 of those are independent small business dealers.

No Membership Fees: Everyone is a Member No membership fee or wait time for membership approval like car share programs. The largest car share company in the U.S. has 1 million members. U-Haul boasts more than 3.8 million truck share members. That same car share company has a presence in 500 cities. U-Haul customers have used Truck Share 24/7 in 5,347 unique cities since April 2017.

U-Haul Truck Share 24/7 is one of the lowest cost investments in infrastructure a city can make because it requires no subsidy, no grant funds or added improvements. A few existing parking spaces is all that a city needs to unlock access to the most interconnected truck sharing network in the world. Michelle Sullivan, U-Haul corporate sustainability manager

Moving San Francisco Forward Our tech savvy community embraces technology disruption that provides greater convenience. Our residents demand public-private partnerships that encourage environmental responsibility, reduce traffic congestion and less air pollution. Our city seeks partners who encourage economic viability and small business development. Our workforce expects job creators who enhance workplace quality of life.
