Precautions Observe the following precautions while installing the VCN-2000 Wire Harness and Injector Harness: Never install the Wire Harness or Injector Harness or work under the hood of a vehicle with the engine running. Some engine parts become extremely hot. Use caution when working under the hood. Read over the entire installation manual prior to starting the installation. Familiarize yourself with the procedures. Installation is very easy if the procedures are followed. Wear safety glasses at all times during the installation process. Nitrous is a gas that is under extreme pressure and can cause frostbite if it comes in contact with the skin.

Software Installation Note: Installed with the VCN-2000 Software is a program that prints vehicle specific instructions for the Wiring Harness and the Injector Harness. Therefore, the VCN-2000 software must be installed before the wiring harnesses can be installed. Only one instruction set can be accessed with the Vehicle-Specific Instructions. Make sure that you enter the correct information. Software Requirements The VCN-2000 Nitrous System Software requires: Pentium PC or equivalent (75 MHz recommended) Windows 95 or Windows 98 with 12 MB RAM (Recommended) 8 MB RAM and 3 MB Hard disk space 3 ½ Floppy Disk Drive Serial Port Printer - to print Vehicle-Specific Instructions Installation Steps 1. Close all programs 2. Click on Run on the Start Menu 3. Type A:\Setup.exe 4. Follow the setup prompts The VCN-2000 Setup program will automatically create a shortcut in the Start Menu to the VCN-2000 Programming Software and the VCN-2000 Vehicle-Specific Instructions Software.

Figure 1 The Vehicle Specific Instructions Software Display Figure 2 Make sure you chose the correct vehicle

Wire Harness Installation Figure 1: Wiring Harness Installation Note: Vehicle-specific installation instructions are included with the VCN-2000 Programming Software. Install the software (read the section Software Installation ) to print the Vehicle-Specific Instructions. Tip: Two 9 wiring harnesses are included with the VCN-2000 kit - a main harness and an injector harness. This allows enough cable to install the VCN-2000 module inside the passenger compartment. Since the module is re-programmable, install it in a location that is easily accessible.

Installation Instructions WARNING The VENOM Harness uses shielded cables. Cutting or modifying the cable will destroy it. This will also void the warranty. NOTE: The VENOM Module is susceptible to electrical noise. You must maintain 6 of clearance between any of the wires within the VENOM harness and any of the following vehicle components: Spark Plug Wires Ignition Coil(s) Alternator Stereo Amplifiers Stereo Speakers A wire diagram is provided on the previous page. 1. Decide where the module will be located. The VCN-2000 module must be located within the passenger compartment. The glove box or under the passenger seat is a good location for the VCN-2000 module. 2. Locate a path for the wire harnesses and drill any necessary holes. 3. Run the wire harnesses along the decided path. 4. Connect power and ground: Connecting power to the VCN-2000 Red Wire: The VCN-2000 red wire should be connected directly to the vehicle s positive battery terminal. The end of the red wire has an eyelet that will connect directly to the vehicle s positive battery terminal lug. NOTE: There are two ground wires on the VENOM Main Harness. Both must be connected to the negative battery terminal. Connecting ground to the VCN-2000 Black Wire: The VCN-2000 black wire should be connected directly to the vehicle s negative battery terminal or a chassis ground. The end of the black wire has an eyelet that will connect directly to the vehicle s negative battery terminal lug. 5. Secure the harness. Use the supplied wire harness ties and adhesive mount bases to secure the harness. Ensure that the harness is not routed too closely to any rotating engine parts or parts that get hot enough to melt the cable insulation.

Connecting The Harness To The Sensors WARNING: SOME VEHICLES USE SHIELDED SENSOR CABLES! Some vehicles use shielded sensor cables to eliminate electrical interference that otherwise could affect the operation of the vehicle s on-board computer. These shielded wires are similar to the coax cable found in your home audio or TV wiring. A shielded cable contains two conductors - the signal wire and the shield. The shield is the outer conductor and is usually made of a steel braid, which is connected to the vehicle ground. Any electrical interference that is induced onto the wire is grounded. This effectively shields the signal wire from capturing this interference, which could affect the electrical signal. If the wire splice provided is applied to a shielded wire, the wiring harness on the vehicle will be damaged. In addition, the signal and the ground will be shorted together which could cause erratic vehicle operation, a no start condition, damage to the vehicle s computer system or all of the above. You can identify a shielded wire by one of the following methods: A shielded wire will be slightly larger than a single wire. A shielded wire will usually be a single color, such as gray or black without any color tracers. You may see the braided shielding protruding out of the end of the wire where it connects to the sensor. A shielded wire may feel rough under the insulation in comparison to a single conductor wire, which is smooth. There are three sensor connections that must be made: Throttle Position Sensor This is a three wire sensor located on the throttle body. This sensor will be connected to the cable on the VENOM Main Harness that is color coded YELLOW. Oxygen Sensor This may be a single, two, three, or four wire sensor located on the exhaust pipe. This sensor will be connected to the VENOM Main Harness wire that is color coded WHITE. Engine RPM Input This signal may be obtained from the Ignition Coil, Tachometer Lead, or DIS Module (if equipped). This input signal will be connected to the VENOM Main Harness wire that is color coded GREEN. The Vehicle-Specific Instructions Software is used to determine what wire color code on each sensor the harness should be connected to. See Software Installation for more information.

These connections are made using the blue splice connectors supplied in the kit. The splice connectors are folded over the existing sensor wire and snapped together. The appropriate wire from the VENOM Main Harness is then connected to the blue splice. This effectively taps into the existing sensor signal. DO NOT cut the existing sensor wire, as this will affect the engine operation. If the sensor uses a shielded wire, you must trim the shielding at the end of the wire to obtain an adequate connection into the inner signal wire. WARNING: The VENOM Main Harness uses shielded sensor wires. DO NOT cut the VENOM Harness to shorten or lengthen the harness. If the harness is too long, route the harness to utilize the entire cable. Looping the wire and securing it with a wire tie is acceptable. If the harness to a sensor is too short, you may obtain an extension cable in various lengths for a nominal charge. Connecting The Injector Harness NOTE: The VCN-2000 Module provides additional fuel to support the addition of nitrous through the existing injectors. It accomplishes this by pulsing the injectors. This procedure deals with the connection to each injector. If the connection to the injector is not complete or secure, the cylinder associated with that injector will run lean, causing engine damage. If the wire from the VENOM Injector Harness is connected to the wrong side of the vehicle harness, the module will be permanently damaged, causing incorrect operation and engine damage. It is highly recommended, and required in some cases, that all the electrical connections to the injectors be tested with a digital volt/ohm meter (VOM). This meter may be obtained at any electronics store (such as Radio Shack) for about $25.00. The VENOM Injector Harness will need to be connected to each injector on the vehicle. Depending on your application, you will need to make 4, 5, 6, or 8 connections.

The injector is supplied battery voltage through the ignition switch on one terminal. This is referred to as the Voltage Supply. The other terminal is connected to the vehicle s on-board computer. The computer supplies the ground to energize the injector, which provides fuel to the engine. This is referred to as the Ground Circuit. The wires on the VENOM Injector Harness must be connected to the Ground Circuit of EACH injector. Failure to provide a good connection will cause the engine to run too lean, causing engine damage. The Vehicle-Specific Instructions Software will identify what color wire is which circuit. For EXAMPLE, the printed instructions will look like: Injector 1 EXAMPLE ONLY EXAMPLE ONLY EXAMPLE ONLY Ground Circuit: Blue/Yellow wire connects to blue wire on VENOM Harness Voltage Supply: Purple/Pink No Connection Injector 2 EXAMPLE ONLY EXAMPLE ONLY EXAMPLE ONLY Ground Circuit: Red/Green wire connects to blue wire on VENOM Harness Voltage Supply: Purple/Pink No Connection Injector 3 etc CRITICAL NOTE: In rare cases, the Voltage Supply circuit color code and the Ground Circuit color code will be the same color, therefore making it impossible to identify one circuit from the other. If this is the case on your vehicle, a voltmeter will be required to determine which wire is the Ground Circuit. Refer to Test Procedure 1B at the rear of this manual if both wires on the injector have the same color code. In this example, one of the blue wires on the VENOM Injector Harness will be connected to the blue/yellow wire of the number one injector and one of the blue wires on the VENOM Injector Harness will be connected to the red/green wire of injector 2. Once all of the blue wires of the VENOM Injector Harness are connected to the Ground Circuit of EACH injector, proceed to Procedure 1A at the rear of this manual to test the electrical connection.

Hose/Bottle Installation Instructions 1. The nitrous bottle should be mounted in the trunk of the vehicle. The bottle is mounted at an angle with the bottle s valve at the highest point. The bottle s valve outlet should be pointed downward toward the floor of the trunk. See Figure 2B. 2. The VENOM valve assembly should be mounted, using the supplied hardware, beneath the hood within 2.5 feet of the nitrous entry point into the engine. Nitrous is injected into the engine in the air inlet just before the throttle body. See Figure 2C. NEVER install the valve assembly in the trunk, passenger compartment or farther than 2.5 feet from the entry point into the engine. Failure to follow these installation requirements will result in engine damage! 3. Route the 20 nitrous hose from the trunk beneath the vehicle into the engine compartment. Avoid the exhaust system, braking components, and suspension components. Connect the nitrous line to the inlet of the valve assembly. Figure 3: Valve Assembly Hookup 4. Connect one end of the 2.5 nitrous line to the outlet of the valve assembly. Using the supplied hardware, connect the other end of the line to the air intake duct, approximately 8-inches from the throttle body plate. See Figure 3. 5. Connect the Positive (RED) wire of the valve harness to the positive terminal of the battery. Connect the Negative (BLACK) wire of the valve harness to the negative terminal of the battery. Connect the four terminal connector of the VENOM Main Harness to the Valve Assembly. Installation of the VENOM VCN-2000 Nitrous System is complete.

VCN-2000 Operating Instructions The VCN-2000 Programming Software Introduction to the VCN-2000 Programming Software The VCN-2000 Programming Software is designed to interface with the VCN-2000 Module. By setting the values of three operating modes, you can fully customize the VCN-2000 Module. Once the values are downloaded to the VCN-2000 Module, you can switch between modes just by turning the power off and turning it back on with the red mode button (on the module) pressed. The software is not needed to switch between modes, only to change the values of the three modes. The three operating modes are: Linear Mode Drag Mode Timed Mode Starting the Software The VCN-2000 installation program will automatically create a shortcut in your Start Menu to the VCN-2000 Programming Software. Click on the shortcut to start the software. When the VCN-2000 Programming Software starts, you will have to select a couple of values so the VCN-2000 Module can work with your vehicle. Those values are: 1. The Number of cylinders in your vehicle 2. The type of Ignition System 3. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) offset voltage

The TPS offset voltage is the voltage at the output of the wire of the Throttle Position Sensor when the throttle is closed. This can be measured with a Digital Volt Meter. The VCN-2000 Module uses this voltage for a basis in calculating the proper throttle angle. It is critical that this entry is accurate. If it is not, the VCN-2000 Module can inject nitrous at the incorrect throttle angle. This voltage is usually between 0.5 and 1.2 volts. You can determine if y ou have entered the correct voltage if the Throttle Angle % reading on the LCD Display is at 0% when the module is re-installed on the vehicle. If it reads too high you will need to INCREASE the value entered into the TPS Offset Field. If the reading is 0% and as soon as you begin to depress the throttle, the Throttle Angle on the LCD Display increases, then the value you entered is okay. You may have to fine tune this entry to obtain optimum operation. You will need to re-program the module each time y ou change this value in the software. This can be time consuming so it is recommended that the actual voltage is measured and the correct value is entered into the software. Setting the Operating Mode Values 1. Linear Mode In this mode, the VCN-2000 Module starts to inject nitrous at the Throttle Angle that you specify, but only after the RPM you specify has been reached. As the throttle is increased, the VCN-2000 Module increases nitrous flow to the maximum amount that you specify. Step 1: Input Linear Mode Parameters With this mode, the Activation Throttle Angle, the Activation RPM, and the Maximum Nitrous Level can be changed. When this mode is selected, the VCN-2000 Module will release nitrous in a linear slope with the throttle position, only after the selected throttle angle and the selected activation RPM have been reached. At 100% throttle angle, the maximum nitrous amount selected will be released.

2. Drag Mode In this mode, the VCN-2000 Module monitors the engine RPM and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Once the RPM that you specify has been reached and the VCN-2000 Module senses that the throttle is wide open, the VCN-2000 Module activates nitrous flow in the amount you specify and for the time that you specify. Step 2: Input Drag Mode Parameters This mode allows the Activation RPM and the Nitrous Level to be changed. When the Activation RPM is reached and the vehicle is at wide open throttle, the VCN-2000 releases the selected nitrous amount until the vehicle drops under the selected Activation RPM or until the throttle position is no longer at 100%. 3. Timed Mode In this mode, the VCN-2000 Module allows nitrous flow in the amount that you specify and for the amount of time you specify, only after the Throttle Angle and the RPM limits (specified by you) are reached.

Step 3: Input Timed Mode Parameters This mode allows the Activation Throttle Angle, the Activation RPM, the Nitrous Level, and the Nitrous Injection Time to be changed. When the selected Activation RPM and the selected Activation Throttle Angle are reached, the VCN-2000 Module will open the valve to the selected nitrous level for the selected injection time. After all of the values are selected, they have to be downloaded to the VCN-2000 Module. This is done with the supplied VCN-2000 Programming Cable. The programming cable will have a DB9 (like the end of a printer cable but smaller) connector on one end and a DIN6 (similar to the end of a mouse that plugs into a computer) on the other end. The DB9 connector will plug into the serial port of you computer. The other end will plug into the VCN-2000 module. Downloading the Program After you select the desired values for the three modes, you must download those values to the VCN-2000 Module. Before you can download the program you must: 1. Connect the module to the computer via the programming cable. THE VEHICLE HARNESS MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE MODULE. Before you connect the module to the computer, make sure that the power switch is in the off position. Once the programming cable is connected, turn the module power switch to the on position. 2. Click on the Step 4: Download Your Program hyperlink on the VCN-2000 Programming Software.

3. Select the Serial Communication Port. On most computers it will be COM1. 4. Verify that the module is correctly connected to the computer and click the Start Download button on the VCN-2000 Programming Software. If the VCN-2000 Module is not correctly connected to the computer then a Communication Error will occur. Check the programming cable connections and try to download the program again. 5. After the download is complete, remove the module from the programming cable and connect it to the Main Wiring Harness (the Main Wiring Harness should already be installed on the vehicle). If you want the selected values to be saved within the VCN-2000 Programming Software click on Save Your Program and Exit. The VCN-2000 Module Operation How to change modes To change the mode, turn the VCN-2000 Module power switch to the off position. Turn the module power on while holding the red mode button. The LCD display will scroll through the three modes. When you find the mode that you want, release the button. The mode will be selected. The LCD Display RPM The Current Engine RPM Exhaust The Current Status of the Fuel (either Rich or Lean) Throttle The Throttle Angle Mode L for Linear, D for Drag, or T for Timed Inj Pw Injector pulse width in milliseconds System Status Will display the current action of the module. System Ready means that the VCN-2000 Module is idle and System Active means that the module is injecting nitrous.
