E-mobility strategy City of Aachen www.aachen.de

e-mobility.. is a vital part of our planning culture E-mobility is an important part of the ongoing SUMP process: 1 out of 8 thematic commissions is dedicated to this thematic area Mobility management accessibility + freight delivery traffic Roads Walking Cycling PT Car traffic e-mobility

e-mobility Part of the SUMP process Some 40 representatives from various organisations/sectors in the city and the region concerned with electric mobility meet quarterly to discuss future working areas, local priorities, responsibilities and budgets City of Aachen RWTH University (various institutes) ASEAG (local transport operator) Chamber of Commerce Ford Research Center Aachen STAWAG (municipal utility company) Streescooter FH Aachen Eurobike Alliander TEMA APAG (municipal parking company) Cambio German Association for Electromobility Chamber of Crafts Sparkasse Aachen Various private companies (e.g. bike retailers, consultancies) VDV - Association of German Transport Companies FEV

e-mobility.. a vital part of our planning culture This process is also acknowledged also by the German government in its recent progress report

Results so far process results Development of a politically approved strategic Vision on Mobility for 2050 Unanimously approved in the mobility council on 23.1.2014 Clear targets and guidelines for future work on all 8 thematic areas: guide rail for future work Based on an intense dialogue-focused process

Results so far Vision Mobility 2050 Aachen is a European competence centre for electromobility. All transport means in Aachen should operate without fossil fuels. The electric energy needed for mobility will be produced locally - as much as possible entirely based on renewables. The city will make all efforts to reach the 2050 targets of the European Commission s White Paper earlier.

Results so far Vision Mobility 2050 Aachen: model region (role model) for electro mobility Aachen is among the leading cities in Germany with the lowest energy consumption per head for mobility. The early and forward looking shift towards alternative power streams and fuels has led to the situation that mobility is still affordable for everybody despite rising crude oil prices. www.lichtblick.de www.nordkurier.de

Results so far Vision Mobility 2050 E-vehicles will be developed in Aachen. Based on electric mobility Aachen takes a leading role in the development of alternative power streams. It is sought to achieve the EU targets for 2050 for emissionfree car traffic in city areas earlier www.t-online.de

Results so far Vision Mobility 2050 Integrated electric mobility Based on pedelecs and e-bikes as well as the subsequent changes in the public transport system, Aachen has achieved to be among the first cities in Germany that operate a full electric transport network ( electric mobility alliance integrating cycling/ pedelec-sharing, car-sharing and public transport). Both pictures: www.bemobility.de

Whats next? From vision to strategy As the vision is now set and agreed: Development of a Mobility Strategy 2030 & concrete implementation plans (5- year focus) for all 8 thematic areas under intense involvement of the members of the thematic commissions, citizens and other stakeholders: Working areas Areas with priority Clear targets (suitable for evaluation) and way to achieve these targets Impacts on the overall targets for the SUMP process Identification of lighthouse projects for the next 5 years Responsibilities and budgets Finalisation is planned for end of 2015; intense citizen participation is planned for early Summer 2015

Online survey electric mobility 2014 www.aachen.de 24.02.2015 16 ELEKTROMOBILITÄT REGION AACHEN

740 participants (38 % experts and stakeholders; differences to other participants were very minor) 46 % agree with peak-oil-theory 95 % see importance for development of e-mobility 4 of 5 participants of the survey like the Aachen approach! 78 % say it s meaningful, that Aachen takes a leading role in e-mobility 88 % agree with e-mobility-part of the SUMP Vision mobility 2050 86 % support Streetscooter-approach 84 % Velocity (pedelec-sharing scheme) 82 % noticed, that ASEAG tested hybrid buses 78 % agreed, to take e-buses, if they have clear environmental advantages, even if they are still more expensive today 87 % like the idea, to convert the ASEAG fleet to an electric fleet until 2030
