TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No. 47/2011 Circulate to: Service Manager Body Shop Parts Manager Foremen Receptionists Technicians Manager Subject/Concern: Model: Markets: Hesitations or weak pull away following cold start; Unstable idle for approximately one minute following cold start Focus 2011.25 (12/2010 ) Build Date: 06.12.2010 04.10.2011 Build Code: AG BU Assembly Plant: Saarlouis Engine: 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma) Transmission/Transaxle: 5-Speed Manual Transaxle (ib5) Focus 2011.25 (12/2010 ) Build Date: 07/2011 04.10.2011 Build Code: BS BU Assembly Plant: St. Petersburg Engine: 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma) Transmission/Transaxle: 5-Speed Manual Transaxle (ib5) All Section: 310-01 Summary Should a customer express concern about hesitations or weak pull away following cold start (typically during first 40 seconds, can be longer in some cases) and unstable idle for approximately one minute following cold start (typically between 10 C and 25 C ambient temperature), the probable cause is early life accumulation of carbon in the combustion chamber. To rectify this concern, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) should be re-programmed with the latest PCM calibration. The calibration update improves the idle stability and reduced pull away hesitations. CAUTION: Make sure that the fuel tank is filled up at least to ¼ of the tank capacity. If required, advise the customer to fill the tank to ¼ of the tank. To clean the combustion chamber deposits a cleaning agent should be added once to the fuel tank. For this purpose a cleaning additive has been tested and proven to reduce the deposits. The cleaning additives are developed by supplier Chevron and marketed as Techron Concentrate Plus Gasoline Fuel System Cleaner this additive is available as a 350ml bottle, a single bottle this size is required to treat each vehicle. CAUTION: It is advised that this is the only product that has been approved for use in reference to this concern, use of other additives is strongly discouraged and may cause further engine and emissions system damage. The cleaning additive will be delivered by the supplier Chevron Lubricants. The required contact/telephone/fax-no. is attached to this service instruction. Labor Times published in this TSB are available from 24.10.2011 onwards. Please refresh your Labor Master file at that day to receive the new data in your Dealer Management System.
