Installation Manual TWM Performance Toyota GT86 / Scion FRS / Subaru BRZ Direct Replacement Short Shifter Begin the installation by parking on a flat surface, place wooden blocks in front or behind the wheels to prevent the car from moving while you re working. Please read this installation manual completely before installing the product. This manual is available for download in color at www.twmperformance.com. Estimated Installation Time: 90-120 minutes Tools required: Ratchet Ratchet extension 10mm socket 12mm socket Philips screwdriver Flat head screwdriver Needle nose pliers Flash light or shop light 3mm Allen key
1. Unscrew the OEM shift knob off counter clockwise 2 2. Using both hands, grab the inside of the plastic boot trim with your fingers and pull up to unclip the trim. You can also use the provided trim tool to pry each clip off 3. Unclip the connector from the underside of the TCS control panel of the trim 4. Pull the boot upwards to slide it off the shifter 5. To take the panels off the sides of the transmission tunnel, grab the most forward edge of the panel and pull down and out
3 6. Repeat on the passenger side 7. Use the trim tool to pry the clips off the top of the tray 8. To take the tray out you will have to pull from the front while pushing from the back with your other hand
4 9. Unclip the connector for the USB drive from the back of the tray 10. Using a Philips screwdriver, remove the 2 screws holding the front of the console 11. Remove the 2 screws holding the middle of the console 12. To remove the handbrake boot, pull upwards with a hand on each side for it to evenly unclip, then simply slide it off the handbrake handle (not pictured)
13. Remove the small mat underneath the console cup holder, and using a 10mm socket remove the 2 screws holding the back of the console (not pictured) 14. Slide the console rearward and up till you have access to the underside of it 5 15. Disconnect the AC outlet plug from the underside of the console 16. Slide the console completely out of the car and set it aside in a secure place 17. Unscrew (counter clockwise) the 2 plastic thumbscrews, and slide the insulator upwards
6 18. Using a 12mm socket, remove the 4 screws holding the metal ting 19. Unclip the harness and the rubber pins from the metal ring and remove the ring
20. Remove the rubber boot by pulling upwards hard to slide it off the shifter. Can you simply grab the bottom edge of the boot and pull up **Remember the position of the boot for reinstallation** 7 21. Using a 10mm socket, remove the 4 screws holding the OEM reverse-lock plate on the carrier, then slide the plate off 22. Splice open the rubber boot that is at the bottom of the shifter. Using needle nose pliers, pull the cotter pin off the base of the shifter, then slide the washer off **Be careful not to lose these**
23. To separate the shifter from the linkage, push against the pin at the bottom of the shifter with the tip of a Philips screwdriver. Locking the shifter into 5 th gear can greatly help. You can also pull the linkage from the passenger side your other hand. 8 24. Grab the top of the shifter with both hands and pull hard upwards to separate it from the carrier. **Screwing the knob back on the shifter and pulling up on the knob is also an option** 25. Grab the TWM Direct Replacement Short Shifter and carefully slide it down the carrier while aligning each sections of the shifter with the pivot housing of the carrier. Using a bit of mutli-purpose grease on the inside of the housing can help. Push the shifter down till the top of the pivot cup is almost flush with the carrier It is that easy.
9 26. Slide the linkage pin into the bushings at the bottom of the TWM Shifter. Align it carefully because the bushings were designed to be really tight. Sliding the linkage pin may require some force, do so till you can clearly see the cotter pin hole on the linkage pin 27. Put the original washer and cotter pin back on the linkage pin to secure the shifter **If you have misplaced these, replacement hardware is provided in the kit** It is helpful to use a ratchet extension to push on the cotter pin to clip it in place.
10 28. Slide the TWM reverse-lock plate on the carrier from the driver s side, secure it with the 4 provided M6 button head screws and washers, a 3mm Allen key is needed for this **Do not tighten any of the screws yet** Slide the place all the way to the passenger side and verify the ease of engagement of 1 st and 2 nd gear, the reverse lock block should be slightly sliding against the plastic piece while doing so. When the engagement seems good, tighten the screws hard 29. Slide the rubber boot on the TWM Shifter. The trick is to pinch 2 sides of the boot and pull apart while sliding it down. Flipping the top edge of the boot inside-out can greatly help. For correct installation, the lip at the top edge of the boot should fit right inside the groove in the reverse-lock block.
11 30. Revert steps 17 to 2 to reinstall all the trims When screwing the shift knob on the TWM Direct Replacement Short Shifter, hold the reverse-lock block not to put excessive force the VDS (Vibration Damping system) or you will risk damaging it. **If you have purchased a TWM Shift Knob, please refer to its installation manual for this step** 31.
