SATELLITE ACCUMULATION AREA MANAGEMENT TRAINING USM Environmental Health and Safety

What is a Satellite Accumulation Area? SAAs are places on the work floor where hazardous waste is allowed to accumulate if certain management criteria are met. SAAs are meant for the temporary storage of waste containers that are being regularly added to. They are not intended for the permanent storage of chemicals

Waste Flow Satellite Accumulation Area/Science Labs Satellite Accumulation Area/Miscellaneous Call UEH&S for pick-up within 72 hours of waste container being full Hazardous Waste Storage Area, Rm. 95 Science/Trades Building 36 Call UEH&S for pick-up within 72 hours of waste container being full Approved, Licensed Transporter External Manifest Off Site, Approved Disposal Facility

Management Requirements: Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) The SAA must be at the point of hazardous waste generation and under the control of an operator. No more than 55 gallons of each waste type shall be collected. When full, each container must be marked with a full date, and either transported off site or moved to a hazardous waste storage area within 72 hours of that full date. *Note: A container is considered full when it reaches 90% of its capacity. Please call University Environmental Health and Safety (780-5338/5227) when a container is marked with a full date so that we may pick it up with in 72 hours.

Example Note: This container was marked full at 90% of its holding capacity. This container is properly labeled with a start date and a full date. The owner of this container would need to call UEH&S the day the container was marked full. This container would need to be picked up no later than April 1 st.

Management Requirements: Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) Each container must be labeled as hazardous waste. Each SAA must be inspected weekly and an inspection log must be maintained. Environmental Health and Safety provides these inspection logs. Note: Failure to conduct these inspections can result in citations & monetary penalties from the State DEP. Let s not wait for this unfortunate outcome DO THE INSPECTION! Ignitable/reactive waste must be stored 50 feet from the property line.

Weekly SAA Inspection Sheet These SAA checklists must be filled out weekly. If you are not accumulating waste in your SAA, or if your lab is unused for a period of time, indicate this on the SAA checklist.

Container Management (SAA) Containers must be kept closed except while adding waste. Containers must be properly labeled with the chemical name, start-date, and end-date when full. Containers must be free of rust, dents or other damage.

Container Management Containers must be on a firm working surface, impervious to spills, and constructed to prevent spillage from leaving the area. The working surface or area must not have floor drains or other escape routes that a spill could reach.

How to Manage and Label Hazardous Waste Use the approved hazardous waste white labels provided by University Environmental Health & Safety. If you run out, please call 780-5338/5227 and we will provide you with more. Segregate wastes into containers based on chemical families and DOT classifications: corrosives, flammables, compressed gases, carcinogens, toxics (metals such as lead or chromium)
