Maximizing Run Times The most important decision to maximize RUN TIME is to choose the most efficient technology components. Refer to the component checklist for futher explanation of recommended components and run times associated with each item. Technology Component Checklist Since computer equipment greatly effects run times, let us help you make sure that the components you have chosen correspond with the cart you have chosen. Thin-Client Laptop Make Model # Up to 16 Hours Run Time* w/o internal battery - 1.7 amps Traditional Laptop (#1 preferred configuration) Make Model # Up to 12 Hours Run Time* w/o internal battery - 2.3 amps Thin-Client + DC Monitor TC Make TC Model # Up to 10 Hours Run Time* - 2.8 amps DC Make DC Model # Small Form Factor (low power) + DC Monitor Make Model # Up to 9 Hours Run Time* designed for mobile applications - 3.2 amps DC Make DC Model # All In One (AIO) Make Model # Up to 9 Hours Run Time* - 3.2 amps * Run times are highly dependent on the power management settings of each technology component. AC Monitors or computers are NOT recommended due to decreased run times. Traditional Laptop + DC Monitor Laptop Make Laptop Model # Up to 7 Hours Run Time* w/o internal battery - 3.8 amps DC Make DC Model # Traditional Laptop + AC Monitor* Make Model # Up to 3 Hours Run Time* w/o internal battery - 9 amps AC Make AC Model # To maximize your investment, Midmark has the guidelines to assist you and your healthcare staff. The Midmark DC Advantage The terms AC and DC represent Alternating Current and Direct Current respectively. Alternating Current (AC) is the type of electricity provided in standard wall outlets. Direct Current (DC) is provided through batteries. Most technology components use DC current; therefore, they have devices called inverters that convert AC to DC. Electrical components that are designed to operate using DC current, but are powered by AC current, use an AC to DC inverter, which typically consists of the cord with a brick or box attached inline between the component and the wall. The inverters waste between 20-30% of the battery power. When powering from a battery directly, there is no need for the inversion process, resulting in improved efficiency and increased run times. DC power eliminates the use of an AC inverter An inverter decreases the mobile run time by 20-30%. It also adds size, weight, complexity and more parts for potential failure Care Exchange DC Powered Workstations enable nurses and caregivers to move however or wherever without skipping a beat. DC power provides true mobility. Two sealed lead acid 12 volt, 18 amp hour batteries are the perfect combination of performance and weight. The DC Cart Power System complies with the following safety standards: UL 60601-1 CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.601.1-M90 Care TM
Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Batteries Sealed lead acid batteries offer the best combination of cost, performance, safety and environmental friendliness of any battery option on the market today. Proven battery technology Reliable performance Easy and inexpensive to replace Long term cost savings A cost savings to you, there is no need for internal laptop battery No shipping and receiving restrictions by the federal government Not highly volatile/combustible 100% recyclable Approved for charging in corridors and in patient rooms (JCAHO compliant) Life Safety Standards, The Joint Commission, November 24, 2008 Computers on wheels and other wheeled carts may be in the corridors provided they are 'in use' and addressed in a fire plan (i.e. move them from the corridor in an emergency situation). 'In use' would refer to anything in the corridors that is idle for less than 30 minutes...the computer on wheels are allowed to charge in the corridors while in use and may be stored in alcoves provided the corridor width is not compromised at any time. Keep in mind that the batteries in the computers on wheels are to be the sealed lead-acid type of either absorbed glass mat design or sealed case. Integrated Power System Software The Care Exchange software delivers microprocessor based technology for intelligent charging, reconditioning, state of charge monitoring and DC power control. Email Notification Can be preset to send to multiple recipients (such as the IT manager and nurse manager) when an alert arises This feature enables and teaches staff about battery management Graphic Users Interface Enables the user(s) to view the true state (health) of the battery Event Logging Provides the user (management, IT, etc.) with a view of the sequence of events experienced by the power system Events displayed are battery state of health, low battery and shut down Automatic orderly Windows shutdown Prevents over discharge of battery and loss of critical data (10 minute alert with 10% of charge remaining on battery). Discharging the battery below 5% will damage the integrity of the battery.
Recharging The Care Exchange Power System supports the charging of the battery, as well as powering devices, simultaneously. There are two power supplies to generate DC power from the wall AC power source. This added benefit includes: Known charge time regardless of the load devices being powered Isolation of the devices from the charging system Allowing the cart to continue in service regardless of the state of the battery Care Exchange Power DC System AC Wall Power AC/DC Conversion AC/DC Conversion Charger Auto Select Switch DC Load Battery Typical DC System AC Wall Power AC/DC Conversion Charger DC Load Battery There are three stages of intelligent battery charging; bulk, absorption and float. The bulk stage provides the initial charge to the battery, using constant current and high voltage. The second stage, absorption, reconditions the battery through a controlled charge with constant voltage and diminishing current. Care Exchange Quick Facts: 5-6 hours average to reach full load (when charged from an empty battery) 80% capacity at 3.5 hours Battery life is maximized when fully charged at least once a week 200-1000 approximate recharge cycles, with a battery life of 18 to 36 months The Care Exchange Power System enforces safety. Continual monitoring of the true state of charge ensures that both the user and the battery are in constant communication The last stage, float, conditions the battery using a safe constant voltage and low current to accept a complete and full charge. Life of a Battery The Care Exchange Power System increases efficiency, maximizes run times and allows you to recharge anywhere. Low Battery Indication Amber light indicates that the battery has been discharged and has 20 minutes remaining to a safe discharge level. State of Charge User friendly Fuel Gauge provides true state of charge based on battery manufacturer s charge/discharge profiles and proprietary algorithms with multiple temperature compensation inputs. Auto Shutdown Steady amber light indicates that the system will perform an orderly Windows shut down within 10 minutes. Blinking amber light indicates that the computer will shut down low battery indication within five minutes. Power Source Green light indicates whether source of power is from AC wall outlet or from DC battery. Charge Status Blinking green light indicates that battery is charging. No light indicates that battery is fully charged and is in float mode. Recovery Amber light indicates that the battery was over discharged and that the system has entered into an autorecovery mode to safely recondition and charge the battery.
