EVOLUTION Issue 1 2012 the newsletter of mitsubishi motors malaysia PP14662/12/2011 (026899) i-miev Eco Tourism Program starts in Langkawi

Issue 1 2012 Letter of t h e m o n t h Got something to say? Give us your feedback and stand a chance to take home exclusive Mitsubishi Motors premiums! We appreciate your feedback and the 3 best letters of the month will be rewarded. Write to us at Evolution Level 6, Building A Peremba Square, Saujana Resort Seksyen U2, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor or e-mail editor@mitsubishi-motors.com.my MESSAGE from the CEO Warm greetings from us at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. Hope you had a good 2011 and more importantly, a great start to 2012! October last year was a milestone year for MMM, and a very memorable one for our family. We managed to be the first to register a battery powered, all-electric car in Malaysia. As the EV pioneer in Malaysia, we had to work closely with the Road Transport Department and ministry departments such as KeTTHA (Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air) to set up a new framework in a system where road tax is charged based on engine capacity. Of course, the i-miev doesn t have an internal combustion engine, and it never needs to visit a petrol station! It s a revolutionary car, an eye opener to all that have sampled it. Many more will have the chance to do so, as we have just started an Eco-Tourism Pilot Demonstration Program featuring the i-miev in Langkawi. Guests of the Four Seasons Resort will get to drive the green car around the green island, for free. No charge, just Enjoying the Triton VGT in Kuching feedback. This is part of a wider awareness program that MMM is running with the i-miev, where the car will demonstrate to the public how amazing an EV is, and how cars like the i-miev can provide mobility while conserving energy and reduce global warming. You ll see and hear more of the i-miev, I promise. On another note, we also recently introduced a new Triton variant, the powerful Triton VGT. I joined some friends from the media at the test drive event in Kuching, and we did a 221 km route that saw a good mix of off road and tarmac stretches. It was a great way for the Triton VGT to showcase its best in class power and new features. It s a great addition to an award winning Triton range that to date, has found close to 30,000 owners since 2006. Read more about this on page 10. At MMM, we strive to provide you with good cars and a pleasant ownership experience. We met 90 happy owners at the recent Mitsubishi 4X4 Driving Spirit event, and I thank each of you for coming. More activities will be coming your way, along with more 3S Centres to serve you better. Today, we have 51 showrooms nationwide, out of which 32 are 3S Centres. There were some major disasters that happened last year, such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the massive floods in Thailand. While it affected our supply, no one is more affected by those who lost loved ones and their homes. To do our small part, MMM has donated RM20 for every car registered between November and December 2011 to aid the flood victims in Thailand. Enjoy reading this issue of Evolution. Happy motoring and have a great year ahead! news Issue 1 2012 Jimisar Autotrade brings CNY joy to seniors Jimisar Autotrade, the biggest Mitsubishi dealership network in Sarawak, has a tradition of charity work, and in the most recent Chinese New Year season, a team from the company brought joy to local senior citizens from Seri Kenangan Old Folks Home. On a scorching Saturday afternoon, three Mitsubishi demo cars - Lancer GT, Pajero Sport VGT and Triton 3.2 headed to Seri Kenangan, located 12 km away from Sarawak capital Kuching. Upon their arrival after lunch, the fleet of Mitsubishi demo cars attracted plenty of attention from the senior citizens. The home houses 83 seniors, and out of that number, 30 are warded. They were delighted to have visitors, especially in a festival season. The charity team, headed by Jimisar Autotrade s Executive Director Ms. Mariana Ismail and staffed by sales consultants, did not only give away pillows, but also distributed angpows to all of the home s residents. The home s Assistant Principal Mr. Abang Iskandar, who was present during the visit, expressed his appreciation to the team for their time and effort, but the best reward for them was to see the faces of the old folks light up. MMM sponsors AloudAsia s Summer Spin Cycle party Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia was part of the recent AloudAsia presents Summer Spin Cycle Foam. Music. Party. Held at the Hard Rock Hotel Penang, the event featured established and undiscovered Malaysian music talents. Partygoers catched acts such as Rosevelt, Balan Kashmir, Tacmatic, Paperplane Pursuit and Beathesystem. 10 per cent of all ticket sales towards the Imagine There s No Hunger campaign to fight against childhood hunger and poverty within the local community. It s a global Hard Rock Hotel initiative. MMM provided the Pajero Sport GS and Lancer Sportback for the event, and both cars were prominently displayed at Hard Rock Hotel Penang. 3

Issue 1 2012 news Mitsubishi 4X4 Driving Spirit event Owners put their machines to the test at Sepang Many urban Mitsubishi pick-up truck and SUV owners don t get to give their tough machines a good workout often enough, so we designed an event for them to do so. Recently, Mitsubishi 4X4 owners were treated to an exclusive hands-on experience at the 4X4 Driving Spirit event that took place at Sepang International Circuit. With 144 participants across ages, the event succeeded in its aim to introduce and educate owners on their vehicles capabilities on various road conditions. The event s hero vehicle was the latest Pajero Sport VGT, the high powered variant of the comfortable seven-seat SUV. It was put to the test on both on and off-road conditions. Accompanied by a professional instructor in each vehicle, the participants tackled rough terrains, went uphill and into mud pits, drove around cones in high-speed and did power sliding around corners. I am very impressed with the good off-road handling, durability and superb performance of Pajero Sport VGT! This is definitely a very memorable experience for me, said Azrulniza Zakaria This is indeed an eye-opening experience. I learnt a lot about my vehicle which I do not know prior to this. Thanks to Mitsubishi for bringing such an exciting event! an excited Mr Beh exclaimed. The event ended with light refreshments and each participant went home with exclusive Mitsubishi Motors merchandise. More fun events are in the pipeline, so stay tuned! 4

The flagship 4X4 has been further enhanced in exterior and interior design, as well as in safety features. The Pajero now comes with a redesigned front grille and bumper, a new skid plate, restyled roof rails and a new 18-inch alloy wheel design. Inside, the Pajero s dashboard is now illuminated in red for a sportier feel that combines well with the luxurious leather and expansive seating. To aid parking and reversing, the 4X4 now comes with a rear view camera system with a monitor incorporated into the auto dimming rear view mirror. Also new is the Brake Override System, which cuts engine power in the unlikely case of simultaneous application of both accelerator and brake pedals. This happens without the engine stalling. Another highlight is the Rockford Acoustic Design premium sound system comprising 12 speakers, an 860-watt amplifier, digital signal processor (DSP) and a 5.1 channel theater surround system, allowing sound balance to be adjusted to focus on the front seats, middle row or the whole cabin. The driver is able to control the 6-CD/USB/ AUX compatible system via steering wheel buttons. The Pajero is powered by a 3.8-litre V6 engine with 250 PS of power and 329 Nm of torque. This strong 24-valve engine is equipped with Mitsubishi Motors MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) technology for optimum performance and efficiency. The V6 is paired to an INVECS-II 5-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode. The latter allows for manual selection of gears when desired. The Pajero is supremely capable off road, thanks to Mitsubishi s unrivalled Dakar Rally heritage. With the Pajero, Mitsubishi won the Dakar Rally a record 12 times, more than any other manufacturer. The Pajero is equipped with Mitsubishi s advanced All Wheel Control (AWC) system that delivers precise traction, power and slip control for each wheel independently for complete driver control. Fully imported from Japan, the Mitsubishi Pajero 3.8 V6 is priced at RM298,980 on-theroad inclusive of insurance and is available in four colours Warm White Mica, Black Mica, Cool Silver Metallic and Quartz Brown Metallic. Issue 1 2012 INTERVIEW Zulkiffli M. Ali, 49 from Kota Bahru, Kelantan Youngest son, Zulkhairi with Mitsubishi ASX Eldest son, Zulhiemi Sya with Pajero Sport Daughter, Zulbatriri Sya in the Lancer GT 2.0 The Mitsubishi Family 2 EVO, 2 ASX, 1 Pajero Sport and 1 Lancer 2.0GT En. Zulkiffli M. Ali owns SIX Mitsubishis, and he s aiming for more! Evolution chats with the businessman from Kota Bahru to find out what he loves about the marque Encik Zul, how many Mitsubishis does your family own, and which models? We have six Mitsubishis at home. Two Lancer Evolution, two ASX, one Pajero Sport and a Lancer 2.0 GT. Wow, that s a full house. Can you tell us why you decided to buy two units of the ASX? It has a stylish new design that is suitable for youngsters. It is a complete package with great performance from the 2.0 MIVEC engine and a comfortable interior at a reasonable price Who drives the two ASXs, - for work or play? I bought the first ASX as a wedding gift for my eldest son, and he uses it as his family car. Later, I thought that ASX could be suitable for my second son too, as he s now a university student in need of transport. What do you like most about your cars? To me, the ASX looks like a raised Lancer Sportback but with more elegant lines. Plus it is a stylish new design and has good safety credentials. On the road, driving the ASX is almost the same as the Lancer it sits flat and corners accordingly unlike many SUVs. For the Pajero Sport, the first thing that attracted me to it is the third row seat. Since I have a big family, the Pajero Sport s seven seats come in handy! I like its ride comfort at high speeds, and the 4WD capability. The Lancer 2.0 GT is the sporty one of them all. The full package of speed, comfort and safety attracted me to buy the car in the first place. The Lancer gives me a new level of driving enjoyment. Can you share with us the history behind your love for Mitsubishi cars? Mitsubishi cars had never let me down, whether is it in performance, design or equipment. Price wise, they are absolutely reasonable and I saved a lot of my car budget. Well, there s a lot of history behind my love for the brand. My favorite car, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 7 received an award as the Car of the Year in an auto show held several years ago that made me love the brand more. I m now eyeing the new Evo 10! Does your family share the same passion? Yes they do! My wife loves to use Lancer 2.0 GT to go to work. Now my daughter is also asking me to buy the ASX for her as her first car. Also, both my highschool kids, who are 13 and 14 years old, love collecting Mitsubishi toy cars and keep themselves updated with Mitsubishi s new models. They just love it. I guess that s what we call inheritance of genetics! 6

INTERVIEW Issue 1 2012 See, fifth from left with his Target Orion colleagues Service With A Smile Periodic checks and servicing your Mitsubishi regularly are important steps in ensuring lasting driving pleasure. Target Orion Klang technician See Kok Leong shares with Evolution why he loves his job and maintenance tips for your car Tell us about your typical day at work The activities that I m involved in on a daily basis are planning and monitoring daily tasks within the workshop. This includes ensuring the quality of cars are in good condition, handling customer enquiries such as test drives, explaining typical problems faced by customers, as well as ensuring quality customer service within the staff. How often should a Mitsubishi vehicle be serviced? Every 10,000 km or six months, whichever comes first. For every 40,000 km, a major service needs to be done. This involves the changeof Automotive Transmission Fluid (ATF), engine coolant, brake fluid, air cleaner, diesel filter etc. What can happen to a vehicle if it s not serviced properly? If a customer does not service his or her car regularly, the engine performance will drop and there s a chance the vehicle will break down. Certain parts of the car could also malfunction. In addition, fuel consumption will also become higher. To avoid all these, service your car regularly. Are there any maintenance steps I should take apart from following the maintenance schedule? Car owners need to know and perform some basic checks for their vehicle. You need to take note of how long more before the car is due for service, brake performance (are there any screeching sounds?) and ensure there s sufficient fluids. Make sure the ATF is at the recommended level (marking on the dip stick), tyre pressure are correct (follow the recommended PSI) and there s enough battery water. How do you like your job as Mitsubishi technician? I m happy. Mitsubishi always provides training for the technicians, and this is how we improve our knowledge and our skills. Mitsubishi also has strong and expert technical support to give advice and solve problems. How long have you been working as a Mitsubishi technician? I ve been a technician for two years now. I plan to stay in this job for a long time and to build my skills because I believe Mitsubishi is a good training ground for me in my career development. Servicing a car at an authorized Mitsubishi service centre and independent workshops - is there a difference? The difference is that authorized Mitsubishi service centres use genuine parts and the staff are trained by Mitsubishi professionals. We use special diagnostic tools to find out what s wrong with the car. 7

Issue 1 2012 news i-miev Eco-Tourism Pilot Demonstration Program All-electric, zero-emissions car to serve Four Seasons Langkawi guests The Mitsubishi i-miev in Four Seasons Resort, Langkawi In the last issue of Evolution, we celebrated the arrival of the i-miev to Malaysia. Last year, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia became the first in the country to register a full electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia with the i-miev, which starred in a showcase to create awarness on EVs and share the viability and practicality of such vehicles in October. Now, the i-miev is continuing its mission, just in a very different environment. From shopping malls, the EV is now serving hotel guests at Four Seasons Resort in the island of Langkawi. This is part of an Eco-Tourism Pilot Demonstration Program that will see MMM loan a unit of the i-miev to the five-star resort. The i-miev will be available for guests to drive around the island, free of charge. The two month stint started last month, and the mission is to gain better understanding of customer behaviour 8 and expectations from an EV. Besides promoting the zero-emissions EV message, MMM can gain feedback from those who borrow the i-miev, too. Fundamentally, eco tourism means making as little environmental impact as possible and encouraging the preservation of environment when visiting a place. 100% electric with zero emissions, yet offering surprising power and a smooth quiet ride, the i-miev is the greenest way to drive in Langkawi, Tetsuya Oda, CEO of MMM said. The resort stands to gain, too. This fits perfectly into our philosophy of engaging in sustainable practices that conserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact, said Philippe Larrieu, Four Seasons Langkawi Resort Manager. To publicise the Eco-Tourism Pilot Demonstration Program, MMM flew in 16 journalists to Langkawi to cover the launch, as well as try for themselves the efficiency and performance of the i-miev. Also brought in was Takayuki Yatabe from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation s EV Business Promotion Department. Yatabe, who travels the world to promote the EV cause, brought with him plenty of EV facts that many did not know. For instance, did you know that the i-miev is great as an emergency power source? Here s how. The car s lithium ion battery pack stores the equivalent of one and a half days of the electricity used by a typical Japanese household, and MMC is developing tech that will allow i-mievs to supply up to 1,500 watts of electricity to power electric jugs, rice cookers, hair dryers, and other small but vital appliances. Not so useful here perhaps, but Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes, which could knock out electricity supply. In fact, 60 units of the i-miev were used for relief

news Issue 1 2012 From L-R: EV Expert from MMC Mr. Takayuki Yatabe, COO of MMM En. Ali Mohamed, CEO of MMM Mr. Tetsuya Oda and Resort Manager of Four Seasons Resort, Mr. Phillipe Larrieu purposes in the earthquake and tsunami disaster last year, when gasoline supply dried up. As a recap, the i-miev is powered by an electric motor, which in turn is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It produces 49 kw and 180 Nm of torque. As usual for electric motors, all that torque is available from start, which makes for good performance and acceleration. Measured by the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) the i-miev is capable of 150 km on a full charge, which takes eight hours at 230 volts. This little wonder of a car is already in production, and is on sale commercially in many countries. It s not for sale in Malaysia yet though, due to the high cost. But should there come a day when government incentives and subsidies for zero-emissions EVs kick in, following the example of countries like Japan, Europe and USA, Mitsubishi will be ready to electrify Malaysia. The interior of the i-miev 9

Issue 1 2012 news Triton VGT going through an off-road drive Mitsubishi Triton VGT launched The most powerful pick-up truck in its class Earlier this year, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia introduced the Triton VGT pick-up truck. With a powerful new Variable Geometry Turbo engine, Malaysia s most awarded pick-up truck is also now the most powerful in its class. The national launch event was held in Kuching, and a spectacular launch gambit kickstarted a weekend carnival at the Spring shopping centre in Sarawak s capital city. Locals and mall goers were treated to fun activities and exciting demo drives in the new Triton variant, and most were left impressed at the truck s abilities. Media members from East Malaysia and 22 of their colleagues from Peninsular Malaysia were in Kuching during the launch, which was followed by a 221km km test drive of the Triton VGT. The route was an exciting mix of tarmac and off-road stretches, and the latter was made more challenging when the skies opened. The convoy 10 of 5 Triton VGTs and 5 Pajero Sport VGTs ended the day at Damai Puri Resort. The choice of Kuching for the Triton VGT s launch signifies the importance of the East Malaysian market for Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. In a market where pick-up trucks dominate the sales charts, the Triton has proved popular, and is the second best selling model in the segment. With 18.9% market share, the Triton is also the second most popular truck in Malaysia. The Triton VGT, with its powerful 178 PS engine, is set to further strengthen MMM s position. Drivability is enhanced thanks to the improved 350 Nm of torque, now available across a broad rev range from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm. Besides the new engine, the Triton VGT also gets a new gearbox in the form of a five-speed automatic transmission with Sports Mode. This is one forward ratio more than the previous Triton, and the ability to select gears manually is exclu- 5-Speed Automatic Transmission with Sports Mode

Issue 1 2012 news Mitsubishi ASX compact crossover upgraded M itsubishi Motors Malaysia has given the ASX compact crossover an upgrade. The trendy ASX, launched in 2010 as a crossover that combines an SUV s high seating position with the handling of a sedan, now packs in new equipment for a more stylish outlook and comfortable drive. Now with 17-inch alloy wheels, the ASX also comes equipped with auto retractable side mirrors, smart key and a push start operating system. There are also magnesium steering 12 paddle shifters that allow drivers to change ratios manually in the CVT gearbox s Sports Mode. For added comfort, the ASX now comes with premium leather seats with added lumbar support. Other equipment include a tilt and telescopic steering, full colour LCD multi info display and a 2-DIN touch screen entertainment system. To aid parking, the ASX spots front and rear parking sensors as well as a reverse camera. Safety wise, the ASX comes with standard Active Stability Control (ASC) and Hill Start Assist; the latter makes it easy to start off on a slope by preventing the vehicle from sliding backwards. The ASX is also equipped with ABS, EBD, pretensioned and force limited seatbelts, dual airbags, plus a driver s knee airbag. Priced at RM138,156.10 on the road without insurance, the improved ASX is available in four colours - White Pearl, Mica Black, Red Metallic and Titanium Grey.

Issue 1 2012 news Mitsubishi at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show Mirage compact car and Concept PX-MiEV II take centrestage Thailand will be the first market to launch the Mirage The 42nd Tokyo Motor Show happened in December 2011 at the Tokyo Big Sight, and Mitsubsihi Motors pulled out all the stops for its home motor show. A total of 15 vehicles were displayed at MMC s show area, but the highlight was on two world premieres - the Mirage compact car and Concept PX-MiEV II. They respectively embody two major pillars of MMC s product strategy outlined in the JUMP 2013 mid-term business plan: global strategic models focused on emerging markets and models featuring green technology. The Mirage compact car embodies the global model strategy while the Concept PX-MiEV II concept SUV features green technology with its unique plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The new Mirage revies a name first used by MMC in 1978. The small car s design focuses on compactness, affordability and high fuel efficiency to fit the needs of emerging markets as an affordable entry-level model as well as needs of advanced markets for fuel efficiency and low-co2 emissions. Powered by a 1.0L three-cylinder MIVEC engine with Auto Stop & Go, MMC has targeted class leading fuel efficiency (Japan market version) of 30 km/l. The car is due to go on sale first in Thailand in March 2012. 14

news Issue 1 2012 Concept PX-MiEV II has a long cruising range EV batteries can power electrical appliances The Concept PX-MiEV II is Mitsubishi Motors idea for a mid-size plug-in hybrid that offers a long cruising range demanded by larger vehicles. With its eco performance and fuel efficiency, the latest PX-MiEV concept effectively brushes off negative perceptions of SUVs. MMC s unique plug-in hybrid system fuses EV tech derived from the i-miev with a small conventional engine that features MMC s latest efficiency technologies. This combination provides not only a combined fuel efficiency of more than 60 km/l, but also high levels of environmental performance while maintaining a cruising range on a par with regular vehicles (over 800 km). 15

Issue 1 2012 news i-miev Prototype to take on Pikes Peak Dakar champ Hiroshi Masuoka to pilot the all-electric racer Yes, the i-miev is going racing! Mitsubishi Motors will enter the i-miev Prototype in the 2012 edition of the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held in Colorado, USA. One of the most famous hill climb events in the world, Pikes Peak sees bikes and cars climb to the 4,300 metre summit, covering an elevation difference of almost 1,500 meters. First run in 1916, the hill climb is one of the oldest motor sport races in America. Atmospheric pressure, temperature, weather and other conditions vary significantly between the start and finish and this requires optimum tuning to ensure the vehicles produce their maximum performance all the way up. The racer rendered here is a prototype based on MMC s all-electric i-miev model, the first 100% electric vehicle (EV) to go into mass production. The i-miev is already on the road in Japan, Europe, North America and now Malaysia. Late last year, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia became the first to register a fully battery powered electric car in Malaysia, and the i-miev is now on duty in Langkawi read more about that on page 8. The i-miev Prototype is to be driven by Hiroshi Masuoka, who is no stranger to readers of Evolution. Masuoka-san is a double Dakar Rally champion, winning the world s toughest race consecutively in 2002 and 2003. MMC is of course the manufacturer with the most Dakar victories, winning the rally 12 times. The i-miev Prototype will use the same EV components as the production i-miev. MMC will use the data obtained through its participation in the event to enhance the durability and reliability of pure EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs which it will be bringing to market in the near future. In addition to MMC s participation in the race, engineers from MMC s development division as well as from its partner manufacturers of batteries, motors and other EV components will be sent to the event to collaborate closer on the sharing of technology and knowhow for the purpose of further boosting MMC s EV development capabilities. 16

regional news Issue 1 2012 Mitsubishi i-miev is Canada s most efficient subcompact The North American i-miev in Toronto Mitsubishi Motors 100% electricpowered zero-emission i-miev has been officially recognised yet again for its fuel efficiency, this time in Canada. The i-miev was recently chosen by Canada s Ministry of Natural Resources (NRCan), as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the subcompact class. The i-miev stays ahead when compared against vehicles in all classes, making it Canada s most fuel-efficient car. No surprise there, since the i-miev is powered by rechargable batteries, and doesn t consume any fuel. Shin Fujioka, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc (MMSCAN) received NRCan s 2012 ecoenergy for Vehicles Award for the subcompact class at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto in February. This is a great honor for the i-miev, said Fujioka-san said. This achievement speaks to what the marketplace needs as we strive to improve our environment and protect our planet s future. We are heartened by the Canadian government s findings that the Mitsubishi i-miev is the right vehicle for the Canadian marketplace. Mitsubishi s approach to technology and addressing environmental concerns is paramount, he continued, and it is encouraging to see the excitement the i-miev has generated for the future of electric vehicles over the past few years. The list of high-profile awards for the i-miev keeps growing. The all-electric, zero-emission car was chosen as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the United States last year by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), thanks to its excellent EPA-rated fuel efficiency rating Mr. Fujioka receiving the 2012 eco ENERGY for vehicles award for the subcompact class from the honorable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources. of 112 MPGe. Recently, the i-miev was named as the Greenest Vehicle by the United States ACEEE non-governmental organization. The i-miev is now in Malaysia, and is part of an Eco-Tourism Pilot Demonstration Program in Langkawi. Read more on page 8. 17
