1ZZ-FE EINE CONTROL SYSTEM SFI SYSTEM 145 DTC P0171 System Too Lean (ank 1) DTC P0172 System Too Rich (ank 1) DCRIPTION The fuel trim is related to the feedback compensation value, not to the basic injection time. The fuel trim consists of both the short-term and long-term fuel trims. The short-term fuel trim is fuel compensation that is used to constantly maintain the air-fuel ratio at stoichiometric levels. The signal from the ir-fuel Ratio (/F) sensor indicates whether the air-fuel ratio is rich or lean compared to the stoichiometric ratio. This triggers a reduction in the fuel injection volume if the air-fuel ratio is rich and an increase in the fuel injection volume if it is lean. Factors such as individual engine differences, wear over time and changes in operating environment cause short-term fuel trim to vary from the central value. The long-term fuel trim, which controls overall fuel compensation, compensates for long-term deviations in the fuel trim from the central value caused by the short-term fuel trim compensation. If both the short-term and long-term fuel trims are lean or rich beyond predetermined values, it is interpreted as a malfunction, and the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC. DTC No. DTC Detection Conditions Trouble reas P0171 P0172 With warm engine and stable air-fuel ratio feedback, fuel trim considerably in error to lean side (2 trip detection logic) With warm engine and stable air-fuel ratio feedback, fuel trim considerably in error to rich side (2 trip detection logic) ir induction system Injector blockage Mass ir Flow (MF) meter Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor Fuel pressure Gas leakage from exhaust system Open or short in /F sensor (sensor 1) circuit /F sensor (sensor 1) /F sensor heater (sensor 1) EFI relay /F sensor heater and EFI relay circuits PCV valve and hose PCV hose connections ECM Injector leakage or blockage MF meter ECT sensor Ignition system Fuel pressure Gas leakage from exhaust system Open or short in /F sensor (sensor 1) circuit /F sensor (sensor 1) /F sensor heater (sensor 1) EFI relay /F sensor heater and EFI relay circuits ECM When DTC P0171 is set, the actual air-fuel ratio is on the lean side. When DTC P0172 is set, the actual air-fuel ratio is on the rich side. If the vehicle runs out of fuel, the air-fuel ratio is lean and DTC P0171 may be set. The MIL is then illuminated. When the total of the short-term and long-term fuel trim values is within the malfunction threshold (and the engine coolant temperature is more than 75 C [167 F]), the system is functioning normally.

146 1ZZ-FE EINE CONTROL SYSTEM SFI SYSTEM MONITOR DCRIPTION Under closed-loop fuel control, fuel injection volumes that deviate from those estimated by the ECM cause changes in the long-term fuel trim compensation value. The long-term fuel trim is adjusted when there are persistent deviations in the short-term fuel trim values. Deviations from the ECM's estimated fuel injection volumes also affect the average fuel trim learning value, which is a combination of the average short-term fuel trim (fuel feedback compensation value) and the average long-term fuel trim (learning value of the air-fuel ratio). If the average fuel trim learning value exceeds the malfunction thresholds, the ECM interprets this as a fault in the fuel system and sets a DTC. Example: The average fuel trim leaning value is more than +35 % or less than -35 %, the ECM interprets this as a fuel system malfunction. INSPECTION PROCEDURE Intelligent tester only: Malfunctioning areas can be identified by performing the /F CONTROL function provided in the CTIVE TT. The /F CONTROL function can help to determine whether the ir-fuel Ratio (/F) sensor, Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor and other potential trouble areas are malfunctioning. The following instructions describe how to conduct the /F CONTROL operation using an intelligent tester. 1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3. 2. Start the engine and turn the tester ON. 3. Warm up the engine at an engine speed of 2,500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds. 4. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIGNOSIS / ENHNCED OD II / CTIVE TT / / F CONTROL. 5. Perform the /F CONTROL operation with the engine in an idling condition (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume). 6. Monitor the voltage output of the /F and HO2 sensors (FS 1S1 and OS2 1S2) displayed on the tester. The /F CONTROL operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5 % or increases the injection volume by 25 %. Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in the fuel injection volume. To display the graph, select the following menu items on the tester: DIGNOSIS / ENHNCED OD II / CTIVE TT/ /F CONTROL / USER DT / FS 1S1 and O2S 12, and press the Y button and then the ENTER button followed by the F4 button. Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester or OD II scan tool. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction. low /F sensor voltage could be caused by a rich air-fuel mixture. Check for conditions that would cause the engine to run rich. high /F sensor voltage could be caused by a lean air-fuel mixture. Check for conditions that would cause the engine to run lean.

Start the engine and turn the scan tool ON. Warm up the ir-fuel Ratio (/F) sensor at an engine speed of 2,500 rpm for 90 seconds. Using the scan tool, check the /F sensor voltage three times, once when the engine is in each of the following conditions: (1) While idling (check for at least 30 seconds) (Step (1)) (2) t an engine speed of approximately 2,500 rpm (without any sudden changes in engine speed) (Step (2)) (3) Raise the engine speed to 4,000 rpm and then quickly release the accelerator pedal so that the throttle valve is fully closed (Step (3)). Conditions /F Sensor Voltage Variations Reference Steps (1) and (2) Changes at approx. 0.66 V etween 0.62 V and 0.7 V Step (3) Increases to 0.76 V or more This occurs during engine deceleration (when fuel-cut performed) For more information, see the diagrams below.

(This will also happen if the /F sensor heater has an open circuit.) If the output voltage of the /F sensor remains at either approximately 0.76 V or more, or 0.56 V or less (see Malfunction Condition diagram) under any conditions, including those above, the /F sensor may have a short circuit. The ECM stops fuel injection (fuel cut) during engine deceleration. This causes a lean condition and results in a momentary increase in the /F sensor output voltage. The ECM must establish a closed throttle valve position learning value to perform fuel cut. If the battery terminal has been reconnected, the vehicle must be driven over 10 mph (16 km/h) to allow the ECM to learn the closed throttle valve position. When the vehicle is driven: The output voltage of the /F sensor may be below 0.56 V during fuel enrichment. For the vehicle, this translates to a sudden increase in speed with the accelerator pedal fully depressed when trying to overtake another vehicle. The /F sensor is functioning normally.

1ZZ-FE EINE CONTROL SYSTEM SFI SYSTEM 159 The /F sensor is a current output element; therefore, the current is converted into a voltage inside the ECM. Measuring the voltage at the connectors of the /F sensor or ECM will show a constant voltage result.
