Salina Area Vo Tech Vehicle Extravaganza in April V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 A Note From the Vice President N E W S L E T T E R D A T E Issue No. 12 3rd - Quarter 2015 What a summer it has been. My wife and I had a goal we set several years ago to see all lower 48 states. We completed that dream in May with a 1200 mile trip to Walla Walla, Washington, traveling through Oregon and Idaho to complete the last 3 states. Every part of this country has its own beauty. We have seen the highest point of the Rockies and the sea level city of Mobile, Alabama. In June we traveled to Pennsylvania for a family reunion that I have not attended for many years. Every place I visit, I would look around and think to myself, this would be a great place for a tractor drive. We have driven to all of the states and although driving can be tiring and sometimes boring, we would do our best to drive during the day to take in the sites. But there is nothing more beautiful than that of the Flint Hills over near Manhattan or Cheyenne Bottoms near Great Bend. Our great state of Kansas has some of the best sites in the country. Take a drive and look around. Tri Rivers Parade Tractors Needed My job took me to Loveland, Colorado and I was unable to attend the Tri Rivers Fair and Rodeo Parade, Tuesday evening of August 4th. 17 tractors made the trip to town to participate in the slow drive down Santa Fe in front of a large crowd. The weather was threatening, but held off until well after the parade end and all the tractors were back in the barn. This parade is one of the highlights many of us look forward to each year. The sidewalks along the route, Elm to Prescott, are always filled with a lot of spectators. Parents with children have one eye on the parade and the other on their kids as they scurry around with large grocery bags, gathering candy as it is tossed their way from entries in the parade. Grandparents gaze at the old tractors and they reflect when they were young and used these machines in the field daily. Some would yell out asking what year our tractor is and they would respond with a quick memory they had and thank us for showing it. Parades give us the opportunity to show our tractors to a lot of people at one time and we get to ride our machines and wave at a lot of people. Even some friends and family. Tuesday, September, 22nd is the 2015 Sunflower Fair. This is a premier health and wellness day. They requested a few tractors from our club at last years event and despite poor weather, the display was well received. This year they are asking for our help again. Prizes will be offered to favorite tractor. Please let Amy Helm know if you will be attending. Tractors will be displayed in the east parking lot. Hope to see you there! The Sunflower Fair is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Older American Act & Medicare! It is a premier health and wellness day. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy a beautiful fall day.

Lots of Opportunity to show your P A G E 2 tractor this fall Kansas State Fair Sept 19th and 20th Smoky Hill Street Fair and Parade Some Tractor club members will be attending the Kansas State Fair Antique Tractor Show on September 19th and Tractor Pull Sunday, September 20th. You need to pre-register to attend this event. This is the last day of the Fair and expect a large crowd to see your Tractor. The Antiques Tractor pull rounds out the days event. Contact Amy Helm or Jim Becker for more details on how to sign up to attend this event. The Smoky Hill Street Fair and Parade and Tractor Show will be September 26. The parade is slated to start promptly at 10 am and we will meet some where around the fire station on Elm Street. Once the parade is over we will meet back at the First United Methodist Church parking lot. We will display our tractors until around 3:00 PM. This has always been a nice fall event for our club and we always had a nice crowd walking through our tractors. So mark your calendar for attending the Smoky Hill Street Fair and Parade. Hope to see you there! Chisholm Trail Day Festival October 3rd All Day Antique tractors from all over the state of Kansas have been finding their way to Abilene, Kansas this time of the year for years. It has become one of the premier fall events in the state. This event not only includes a parade of tractors, but each tractor and driver are introduced to the attending crowd. You can display your tractor driving skills in one or more of the tractor games for those who dare to compete. Games include the slowest tractor. Who can best back up a trailer best and quickest. Kids and grown ups can enjoy other events such as riding the old steam locomotive or riding the old steam engine carousal. Several food vendors, with a variety of food and live entertainment are included for your enjoyment. There is a blacksmith shop and a working sawmill where you or your grandchild can walk away with a slab of lumber that you have to roll the windows down in the car to get home. It is a great fall event to visit even if you don t bring a tractor. Hope to see you there!

Central Kansas Central Flywheels Steam Engine Show P A G E 3 The Central Kansas Flywheels Steam Engine and tractor show will be again this year a two day event. The event begins Saturday October 10th. There is plenty to do for the whole family. The antique tractor pull will be on Sunday. You will be able to watch the demonstration of a working sawmill, powered by one of the biggest steam engine tractors in the state. You may see a couple of Tractor Trader on line If you have not visited the Tractor steam power tractors moving about on the grounds. There will be a tractor parade on Saturday with introduction of driver and tractor. There should be tractor games for those who would like to show their skills. Oliver Tractor P A G E 4 Charles Walter Hart and Charles H. Parr attended the University of Wisconsin and while working on their Thesis presented in 1896 their first engine. After graduation, they form the Hart-Parr Company on June 12, 1901 in Charles City, Iowa. And the first Hart-Parr Number 1 was finished in late 1902. Although the Tractor Engine was not a quick success, in 1906 the term tractor was coined. Sales Manager W.H. Williams was credited with the term. From that time forward Hart-Parr was know as the founder of the Tractor industry. By 1928 Hart-Parr, American Seeding Machine, and Nichols and Shepard Company were producing machinery that was becoming obsolete and need capitol. So in 1929 they merged with the Oliver Chilled Plow Company to Form the Oliver Farm Equipment Co. shorten later to the Oliver corporation. They continued to when eventually The White name replaced Oliver. The Kansas Tractor Club is a Non-for-Profit organization and all donations and dues are tax deductible.
