Hydrau & Hydrau XR Frequently Asked Questions Hydrau and Hydrau XR are the latest hydraulic oils to join the John Deere maintenance fluids line-up. Hydrau and Hydrau XR are specifically designed for use in the hydraulic and hydrostatic systems of construction and forestry equipment. Frequently Asked Questions: Why was there a change from engine oil? 1. Customer feedback told us there was a need for a fluid offering extreme cold weather operation, and all season capability. 2. Factory product line simplification Five different fluids across Davenport and Dubuque assembly lines were consolidated down to two fluids. 3. Engine oil reformulations (CK-4) will no longer be tested in hydraulic applications. 4. As a major OEM, our best option for increased productivity and uptime is equipment filled with the proper fluid in each tank. Maximizing component durability while extending drain intervals requires dedicated fluids specifically designed for each major system. What oils are being replaced with Hydrau and Hydrau XR in the aftermarket? 10W30 Replace with Hydrau 0W40 Hydrau 46 Plus AW46 What machines will use the new oils? This change will affect all products manufactured at Davenport Works and Dubuque Works. As of January 1, 2015, Hydrau will be the standard factory fill, replacing 10W30 engine oil for all product lines. The optional factory fill for cold climates on the Grader and TFB product lines will be Hydrau XR, replacing 0W40, Talamar 32, Hydrau 46 Plus, and AW46. Continued implementation of Hydrau XR will continue throughout 2015 across all other product lines and option should be available by next fall. Are these oils backwards compatible. Yes. 1
Is this product compatible with Hitachi s zinc free hydraulic oil? No, a system flush of zinc-free Hitachi oil is required before use of any hydraulic oil containing zinc anti-wear additive. Never mix zinc and zinc-free fluids together. What will be the recommendation for the current and older machines using 10W30 engine oil in the hydraulic systems? The recommendation is to use Hydrau for these machines at the earliest convenience. Future engine oils will not be tested and approved for hydraulic system use beyond CJ-4 at which time full conversion is expected. Will changing from Plus-50 II engine oil to either Hydrau or Hydrau XR require a complete system flush? No. The mixing of oils is not recommended, however, a test matrix has been run with the following mixture ratios: 10/90, 50/50, and 90/10. All tests passed. Are these oils a replacement for Hy-Gard? No. Hy-Gard is a powertrain, axle, and transmission fluid specifically designed to minimize gear wear and brake chatter. What will the recommended service intervals be? At this time they remain unchanged. Please check your owner s manual for service interval recommendations. How will Hydrau and Hydrau XR affect warranty? There will be no effect on the warranty of the respective machines. Is this a John Deere formulation? Yes, John Deere owns the specifications of these fluids. The performance additives within these new fluids will not change without our approval, unlike today s engine oil additives which change every few years and have to be retested for hydraulic use and approval. 2
