Malaysia Key Highlights Malaysia has traditionally been a popular destination for tourists in the Asia-Pacific region and this has been reflected in the country s relatively high volume of inbound tourists. The number of international visitors to the country increased steadily from 22.1 million in 2008 to 25.0 million in 2012. The five main countries from which Malaysia s inbound tourist arrivals originate are Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Brunei. The Malaysian government is committed to further developing the country s tourism in collaboration with private companies. For example, the government set the target of 2020:36:168, which states that, by 2020, Malaysia expects to record 36 million tourist arrivals and MYR168 billion in tourist receipts. Based on this target, the government expects the tourism sector to grow by three times its current size and contribute a weekly tourist expenditure of MYR3 billion to the country s GDP in 2020. Domestic tourism expenditure increased from MYR16.1 billion (US$4.8 billion) in 2008 to MYR39.7 billion (US$13.0 billion) in 2012, after recording a CAGR of 25.32% during the review period. Retail held the largest share of total expenditure in 2012, followed by transportation and foodservice. Domestic tourism expenditure is expected to increase at a CAGR of 13.92% over the forecast period, to post a total expenditure of MYR76.2 billion (US$24.9 billion) in 2017. Malaysia has become a key destination for Middle East tourists due to its Islamic heritage. International arrivals from the Middle East recorded the highest CAGR of 9.64% of any region in the review period. Travelers from the Middle East are also high-spenders which bodes well for tourism receipts. Outbound tourist volumes rose from 36.7 million in 2008 to 48.9 million in 2012, at a CAGR of 7.46% during the review period. Leisure travel is expected to be the key driver for outbound travel in the forecast period. Outbound tourism is expected to increase at a CAGR of 5.61% over the forecast period. Outbound departures are set to reach 64.3 million by 2017 as a result of strong economic and aviation capacity growth. In terms of region, Asia-Pacific is the most visited destination by Malaysians, followed by South America and North America. The airline market s load factor, a measure of its capacity utilization rate, increased from 70.9% in 2008 to 77.5% in 2012, and is expected to increase to 81.0% by 2017. Low-cost carriers posted a higher load factor of 80.3% in comparison to the 74.3% load factor of full service carriers in 2012. Room occupancy rates declined from 66.3% in 2008 to 62.4% in 2012 but are expected to increase at a CAGR of 0.87% over the forecast period to post an occupancy rate of 65.2% by 2017. Midscale hotels had the highest occupancy rate at 65.1% in 2012. Luxury hotels are expected to hold the highest occupancy rate in 2017. Car fleet size increased from 90,474 in 2008 to 114,949 in 2012 and is expected to reach 136,580 by 2017. The number of rental days also rose from 24.9 days in 2008 to 32.3 in 2012, and is expected to increase to 39.1 days by 2017. Additionally, the utilization rate improved from 75.4% in 2008 to 77.0% in 2012, and is expected to increase to 78.5% by 2017.

The market share of online intermediaries is expected to increase in line with rising internet penetration. The online travel channel s share of the travel intermediaries industry is expected to increase at a CAGR of 13.43% over the forecast period. Consequently, the in-store channels market share is anticipated to record a slowdown over the forecast period as it grows at a CAGR of 2.93%, compared to a CAGR of 5.63% registered during the review period.
