Letter of t h e m o n t h Got something to say? Give us your feedback and stand a chance to take home exclusive Mitsubishi Motors premiums! We appreciate your feedback and the 3 best letters of the month will be rewarded. Write to us at Evolution Level 6, Building A Peremba Square, Saujana Resort Seksyen U2, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor or e-mail editor@mitsubishi-motors.com.my MESSAGE from the CEO Greetings from us at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. Time flies It wasn t too long ago when I penned my first piece for Evolution earlier this year, and now, we re heading towards the end of the year. 2011 has been an eventful year, with both ups and downs making their presence felt. Without a doubt, the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan was a low point, taking with it entire livelihoods and cities, while deeply affecting the manufacturing industry. However, I m pleased to report that Mitsubishi Motors have fully recovered from that setback, and we re more committed than ever to build better cars. More recently, Thailand has been affected by serious floods, and although Mitsubishi Motors Laem Chabang Plant was not damaged, some parts suppliers were affected, and production was put to a halt as a result. We will monitor closely the situation in Thailand, and vehicle delivery to customers will be made as soon as possible.. During this tragedy, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has donated 30 million yen to relief funds in aid of Thailand. We at MMM want to do our small part to help the Thai flood victims as well, and we will be donating RM20 for each Mitsubishi vehicle registered in November and December 2011. On a brighter note, MMM is proud to be the first automotive company in Malaysia to register a fully electric vehicle the i-miev. As you would read in this newsletter in Pages 14 & 15, the i-miev is not just a concept, but a production vehicle that is already on sale in various countries. With the i-miev, one gets strong acceleration and silent operations with zero emissions, and you don t have to visit a petrol station ever again! Our intention is to raise awareness of zero-emission electric vehicles among Malaysians, paving the way for the future of mobility. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation believes that popularization of EVs is one way the road transportation sector can help to achieve a low-carbon society, and has been working to promote electric vehicles on a wider scale in Japan and overseas. Recently, my colleagues and I joined some of our media friends on a test drive of the new Pajero Sport VGT in the beautiful state of Sabah. The drive from Kota Kinabalu to Mesilau Nature Resort which was located up in the hills was the perfect place for for the VGT to showcase its more powerful engine and impressive comfort. I have no doubt that the VGT will build on the success of the Pajero Sport, which has over 3,000 happy owners to date. Read more about the Pajero Sport VGT in page 16. MMM s main mission is to provide not just good cars, but a pleasant ownership experience to Mitsubishi customers, and in line with this, we will continue to expand our service and dealer network to reach further and deeper into Malaysia. At present, MMM has 47 showrooms nationwide, including 25 3S Centres, as well as 36 service outlets. These figures will grow throughout 2012. The year end holiday season is here, and Chinese New Year is fast approaching, so have a happy and prosperous new year ahead. Happy motoring! news The Management of Jimisar Autotrade with Maybank and the representatives from Huazong Chinese Association (Youth Section) Blood donation drive by Jimisar Autotrade Mitsubishi dealer Jimisar Autotrade jointly organised a blood donation drive together with Maybank and Huazong Chinese Association (Youth Section) in June. Held at the Jimisar Autotrade, Kuching showroom, the successful event saw 115 pints of blood collected from a total of 165 registered donors. The response was so overwhelming that by midday, they ran out of tester kits for the donors! The original target was 90 pints so it was a resounding success. Buoyed by the good response, Jimisar Autotrade will include a blood donation drive as its annual CSR event. Mitsubishi dealer JM Auto Gallery hosts Buka Puasa for orphans JM Auto Staff and the children It s important to serve the community we live in, and help the less fortunate, and with this spirit, Mitsubishi dealer JM Auto Gallery organised a Berbuka Puasa event for orphans. The breaking of fast dinner was held at it s Mitsubishi Motors 3S center in Alor Setar. Attended by 150 guests including 52 orphans from Alor Setar, the Berbuka Puasa event was graced by the chairman of Lembaga Kebajikan Perempuan Islam Daerah Kota Star, Datin Hajjah Roziyah. Besides serving up a delicious spread of food, JM Auto Gallery also gave goodie bags to the orphans which included a Baju Kurung or Baju Melayu, Mitsubishi merchandise and Duit Raya. It may have been a simple do, but it was a meaningful night out for the orphans, bringing some cheer for the festive season. 4

news Pajero Sport tackling the rough terrain The Dakar Rally Experience in Sabah Triton and Pajero Sport put to the test by two-time Dakar champ The Mitsubishi 4X4 Dakar Rally Experience recently made a stop in Sabah, the beautiful East Malaysian state where 4X4 vehicles are highly popular. The exciting event was held in Kota Kinabalu for the first time, drawing in huge and enthusiastic crowds. Over 5,000 people attended the two-day event at Alamesra, KK, which concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. Participants were given a rare chance to go on a high-speed taxi ride by Hiroshi Masuoka, a two-time champion of the Dakar Rally, known as the world s toughest race. It truly was a memorable experience, and judging by the expressions of participants when they alighted from the taxi, 6 most were in awe of the capabilities of both man and machine. Masuoka drove both the Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport SUV around an off road course that included a 48-degree side traverse ramp, cross axle ramp and a 50-degree giant ramp, among other obstacles. It perfectly showcased the off road capabilities and toughness of the vehicles. The good natured and affable Masouka took over 600 people on the ride, giving them a small taste of what a Dakar Rally stage feels like. At times powersliding while smiling, Masuoka was in high spirits throughout the event. I am very happy to be here in Kota Kinabalu for the first time. The rough terrains in KK have certainly put the Triton and Pajero Sport to the test and I am proud to say both of the Mitsubishi vehicles had conquered all rough terrains with proven 4WD capabilities for both off-road traction and on-road cruising comfort, Masuoka remarked. Visitors were also treated to fun activities and live band performances at the Mitsubishi 4x4 Dakar Rally Experience. With great deals to enjoy and fun activities for the whole family, the first 100 daily to test drive any Mitsubishi Motors models went home with exclusive Mitsubishi Motors merchandise.

INTERVIEW Trying out the Triton Evolution talks to 4X4 veteran Alan Yap, who tells us why he loves his Triton With a spacious cabin and stylish outlook, the Mitsubishi Triton draws in many who would otherwise consider a sedan car. But those qualities, plus Mitsubishi s unmatched Dakar Rally winning heritage and reputation means that traditional 4X4 buyers and fans are also making it their choice. Whether as a tough go-anywhere workhorse or a weekend off-road expedition machine, the Triton is winning over these pros. New Triton owner Alan Yap is one of them. Mr. Yap used to drive an Isuzu Trooper back in the 1980s, and more recently owned not one, but two other pick-ups. Mr Yap, who is married with kids, says that he s using the Triton for a change. He belongs to an off-road enthusiast family, and reveals to us that two of his brothers are driving Mitsubishi 4X4s and his uncle recently bought a Pajero Sport SUV. Mr Yap is a member of ACKL, the oldest 4X4 club in KL, and he goes off roading throughout the country, mostly in Pahang. However, he also uses the Triton as his daily driving machine, clocking around 50 km per day from his Wangsa Maju home to Petaling Jaya for work. Refilling his truck with a quarter tank of diesel left, he typically gets a range of 600 km, which he says is 80 km more than his previous truck, which has a similar sized tank. The Triton s good fuel economy is a big plus point for him, but Mr Yap also likes the Mitsubishi s strong pulling power. It didn t take long for him to realise that. On the second day after taking delivery of his Triton, Mr Yap took it along the Karak highway, and from the stretch from Bukit Tinggi to Genting Sempah, he was pleasantly surprised at how much better its acceleration was compared to his previous truck. He also noticed the DI-D engine s flexibility, which translates to less downshifts on inclines. Mr Yap, who purchased his black Triton 2.5 from Target Orion Star Klang, plans to add a GPS and reverse camera to his truck. He has already fitted a tonneau cover for his truck s bed and altered the wheel offset. Evolution wishes Mr Alan Yap a happy and lasting relationship with his Triton! 10

news Mitsubishi registers the first electric car in Malaysia The future is electric, and Mitsubishi is first on the scene Oil is a finite resource, and the rate at which we re consuming petroleum is alarming. Electric cars are the future, something that Mitsubishi Motors have predicted for a long time. The fruit of this foresight is the roll out of the i-miev a fully electric car that s not just a concept, but in production. Recently, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia marked a milestone by registering an i-miev in Malaysia, the first fully electric car to be registered in our country. The i-miev will be used to run a suite of activities to promote public awareness on the appreciation for environmental practicality of electric vehicle 14 (EVs) as well as to reduce global warming. Producing 49 kw of power and 180 Nm of torque, all of which available from start, the i-miev (short for Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) is powered solely by electricity, and can be recharged from a regular home socket. With a top speed of 130 km/h, this compact four-seater has a 160 km range from an eight-hour charge at 230 volts. It s perfect for urban conditions, and not just because one won t need to visit the petrol station ever again. The i-miev accelerates 31% faster than a gasoline powered car in the 40 to 60 km/h range, which equates to spritely performance. In the long run, we are happy to offer Malaysians the opportunity to purchase their own EV and make the choice towards a greener future. This effort is also in line with Mitsubishi Motors global direction to reduce the rate of global warming and to decrease dependence on fossil fuels, said Tetsuya Oda, CEO of MMM. Mitsubishi Motors EV development history began with the Minicab EV in back in 1969. Throughout the decades, the company continued its research and development, concentrating principally on motors and batteries. In 2006, Mitsubishi Motors developed the

news Issue 3 2011 Battery Layout Ample Cabin Space i-miev, and delivery to corporate, governmental and local authority users happened in July 2009 in Japan, and sales to private customers in Japan started in April 2010. Since then, Mitsubishi Motors has sold around 4,000 units of the i-miev in Japan and has exported over 10,000 units to 19 countries throughout Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Chile. The i-miev is based on the gasoline-powered i minicar, but instead of an internal combustion engine, its sole power source is a lithium-ion battery pack powering a permanent magnet electric motor. The 330V battery is located under the floor deck, while the electric motor is housed under the luggage compartment. A perfect fit which doesn t compromise the regular car s space and versatility. MMM had a special showcase of the i-miev at 1 Utama in October. The showcase was held to create awareness on zero-emission of electric vehicles in Malaysia as well as to share the viability and practicality of EVs. Best of all, visitors had an opportunity to ride on the i-miev, which impressed many with its silent operation and good performance. Showcase at One Utama 15

MEDIA REVIEW By Danny Tan of www.paultan.org Brawny Pajero Sport VGT takes on Borneo By Danny Tan of www.paultan.org We ve wanted it since Thailand had it earlier this year, and Mitsubishi s Variable Geometric Turbo (VGT) engine is now here, packaged within the Pajero Sport SUV body. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) launched the new variant in October. With the addition of VGT, the 2.5-litre DI-D commonrail diesel unit puts out 178 PS and 350 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm. It s quite a substantial increase from the non-vgt engine s 136 PS and 314 Nm. Better still, the benefits stretch at both ends the Pajero Sport VGT is claimed by MMM to be 12% more fuel effiicient that before. We recently got to drive the Pajero Sport VGT on the beautiful mountain roads of Sabah. As a recap, the Pajero Sport was launched here in mid 2009. The seven-seater SUV is based on Mitsubishi s stylish Triton pick-up truck, but is also more than just a Triton with a canopy. Features that set it apart include plusher materials, Tiptronic manual shift, third row seats and rear coil spring suspension in place of the Triton s leaf springs. Currently, MMM sells 2WD and 4WD versions of the Pajero Sport, and the VGT, available only in 4WD automatic form, is an addition to the range. All are imported CBU from Thailand. Visually, there isn t much to differentiate the VGT from its less powerful siblings, only a locally fitted VGT badge on the tailgate and a Hi Power emblem on the sides. All else is familiar. Inside, the VGT is quite well equipped. The centrepiece is an aftermarket 2-DIN Kenwood ICE system. This full colour touch screen head unit incorporates a reverse camera and Garmin GPS guidance. Other useful features are cruise control (buttons on the steering s right spoke), leather upholstery, auto climate control plus rear AND front parking sensors (upgraded from two to four eyes at each end). A new addition here is Mitsubishi s magnesium shift paddles, as fitted to the Lancer and ASX. The long and conspicuous paddles control a new gearbox a five-speed INVECS-II automatic transmission, one ratio more than the non-vgt Pajero Sport. So it s a new engine, new gearbox and more features in the cabin for the extra RM5,000 over the GS 4WD. The Pajero Sport VGT is priced at RM167,375.80, slightly less than the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi Premium, which MMM considers a rival. The Pajero Sport has always been a decent SUV to drive, taking into account its truck underpinnings. Not much of a surprise really, since Mitsubishi s entrants into the C-segment sedan and SUV markets are on the better side of the driving scale. The Triton, which contributes its platform to the Pajero Sport, is also the pick-up truck that those coming from cars will be most comfortable with. The Pajero Sport rides well, and I reckon that this comfort is one of its main strengths. Besides ironing out bad roads and soaking bigger bumps well, the big SUV is also firm and steady past 16

MEDIA REVIEW Issue 3 2011 Drive up leading to Mesilau High-speed demonstration by 2-time Dakar Rally Champ, Hiroshi Masuoka the highway limit. And the rear end doesn t hop around independently, thanks to the coil springs that replace the Triton s leafs. By the way, the front seat design is new, and it s more supportive than before, too. The Pajero Sport is not the sharpest tool in the bends, for obvious reasons, but it hangs on pretty decently if you ignore the body roll and weight transfer, and push on. Two-time Dakar champion Hiroshi Masuoka was brought into Borneo to show us how it s done. In a parking lot with cones, the champ threw the Pajero Sport s considerable 2 plus tonnes into crazy lean angles, even lifting some tyres in the process. As usual for Masuoka san (yours truly is lucky to have rode with him on several occasions now) he was twirling the wheel nonchalantly, smiling and talking in the process. Like a well oiled driving machine, the man was consistent round after round from start to end. We did not go to such extremes on the road, but it s good to have the knowledge that this isn t an easy car to topple despite protests from your passengers. Nothing has changed in that respect, which leads us to the powertrain. It s been very long since I drove the Pajero Sport, and without a back to back refresher, it s hard to tell the difference, although I m sure an extra 42 PS and 36 Nm will feel different. In isolation, it s a strong diesel engine in the truck mould, which means it roars and one shouldn t expect BMW 20d refinement or response. Engine response isn t the most immediate, which may give the (wrong) impression of a big lazy beast, but speed rises faster that you d think just observe the speedo. Also, the VGT engine s turbo whistle is quite apparent, if that tickles your fancy. Wind down the windows to appreciate. We drove a long scenic route from Kota Kinabalu city (they have great beef noodles!) to Mesilau up in the mountains, and I found myself using the shift paddles a lot, definitely a useful addition and more convenient than the shift lever, which has Tiptronic on the far side of the driver. Those long sickles are standard Mitsubishi issue, the best of its kind, in my opinion. Our route included an off road stretch that the Pajero Sport dismissed with ease. While the stretch was mild for off road standards, I still wouldn t have attempted it in a crossover SUV. Here, one has good ground clearance, approach/ departure angles and a robust frame, plus MMC s Super Select 4WD system with four modes 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport VGT is a good SUV in the traditional sense. Rugged underpinnings that can truly go off road, but with good comfort, space and amenities for those who use it solely as an urban machine. Although it might look unflattering next to the Hyundai Santa Fe for some, the Mitsu is a different sort of animal really, one with its own set of strengths. 17

news Mitsubishi i-miev wins American EPA fuel economy award The innovative and fun-to-drive 2012 Mitsubishi i electric vehicle has scored first-place honors on America s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) list of Fuel Economy Leaders: 2012 Model Year. The list is part of the governmental agency s annual Fuel Economy Guide. The i electric vehicle impressed with its astonishing EPA-rated 112 combined/126 city/99 highway MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). Outside of America, the car is called i-miev. According to the EPA s website, the Fuel Economy Guide is an annual publication containing the fuel economy estimates for all cars and light trucks. The guide includes much more information that appears on the window sticker alone. It includes information about alternative fueled vehicles, the range of fuel economy for different classes of vehicles, a list of fuel economy leaders, and tips for improving fuel economy. The annual Fuel Economy Guide is published jointly by the EPA and the Department of Energy (DOE). We are very pleased to see that the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have rated the 2012 Mitsubishi i as the top fuel economy leader in its annual Fuel Economy Guide, said Yoichi Yokozawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA). With 17,000 i-miev-based units produced for various international markets, we look forward to providing North American consumers with an exceptionally well-engineered electric vehicle that has proven itself to be reliable, safe, efficient and very affordable in overall price and cost of operation, he added. Even as the i-miev is impressing USA, it s captivating Malaysia. At home, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has registered a unit of the i-miev, in the process becoming the first to register a fully electric car in the country. Read more about that on pages 14 and 15. 20
