Introduction Symbols Used This documentation uses the following symbols to indicate special information: Symbol Description Indicates an item of a non-specific nature, possibly classified as Note, Caution, or Warning. Indicates an item requiring care to avoid electric shocks. Indicates an item requiring care to avoid combustion (fire). Indicates an item prohibiting disassembly to avoid electric shocks or problems. Indicates an item requiring disconnection of the power plug from the electric outlet. Memo Indicates an item intended to provide notes assisting the understanding of the topic in question. REF. Indicates an item of reference assisting the understanding of the topic in question. Provides a description of a service mode. Provides a description of the nature of an error indication.

Introduction The following rules apply throughout this Service Manual: 1. Each chapter contains sections explaining the purpose of specific functions and the relationship between electrical and mechanical systems with reference to the timing of operation. In the diagrams, represents the path of mechanical drive; where a signal name accompanies the symbol, the arrow indicates the direction of the electric signal. The expression "turn on the power" means flipping on the power switch, closing the front door, and closing the delivery unit door, which results in supplying the machine with power. 2. In the digital circuits, '1'is used to indicate that the voltage level of a given signal is "High", while '0' is used to indicate "Low".(The voltage value, however, differs from circuit to circuit.) In addition, the asterisk (*) as in "DRMD*" indicates that the DRMD signal goes on when '0'. In practically all cases, the internal mechanisms of a microprocessor cannot be checked in the field. Therefore, the operations of the microprocessors used in the machines are not discussed: they are explained in terms of from sensors to the input of the DC controller PCB and from the output of the DC controller PCB to the loads. The descriptions in this Service Manual are subject to change without notice for product improvement or other purposes, and major changes will be communicated in the form of Service Information bulletins. All service persons are expected to have a good understanding of the contents of this Service Manual and all relevant Service Information bulletins and be able to identify and isolate faults in the machine."

Chapter 3 3.1.4 Document Detection 3.1.4.1 Detection of Presence/Absence of Document 0023-9209 The paper set sensor (S6) is used to detect presence/absence of paper on the tray. When paper is placed on the tray, the detection lever interlocked with the light shielding plate moves to allow the light blocked by the photo interrupter to pass through. Thus, the paper set sensor (S6) generates a paper detection signal (EMPS). Upon detection of the paper detection signal (EMPS), the inserter controller PCB turns on the paper set indicator. Inserter controller PCB Paper EMPS S6 F-3-18 3.1.5 Detecting Jams 3.1.5.1 Overview This unit is provided with the following paper sensors to detect presence/absence of paper and check whether paper is fed normally. Paper feed sensor (S3) Paper registration sensor (S4) Paper set sensor (S6) Tray paper sensor 1 (S7) Tray paper sensor 2 (S8) Reverse sensor (S10) Reverse timing sensor (S11) Reverse entrance sensor (S12) Delivery sensor (S13) 0023-9211 Occurrence of a jam is judged according to whether paper exists at the sensors at the check timings memorized in the micro computer (CPU) on the inserter controller PCB. When the CPU judges that a jam has occurred, all operations of this unit stop and occurrence of the jam is reported to the DC controller of the host machine. When all doors and covers have been closed after removal of the jam, the inserter controller PCB checks whether the above nine sensors detect paper. If any sensor detects paper, the PCB judges that the jam has not been removed completely and sends a jam removal signal to the host machine again. 3-11

Chapter 3 3.1.6 Power Supply 3.1.6.1 Overview This unit is supplied with DC power by the power supply unit. Functions of the power supply unit and others are summarized in the table below. 0023-9212 Name Function Power supply unit Generates DC power (5 V line and 24 V line). Supplies DC power to the inserter controller PCB. Front upper cover switch (SW1) Leak current breaker Turns on/off the 24 VDC. Turns the power off when a failure occurs. Front upper cover switch (SW1) Consent AC Leak current breaker Power supply PCB +24V +5V Inserter controller PCB +24V +5V Solenoid motor Sensor F-3-20 3.1.6.2 Protection Function 0023-9213 The inserter controller PCB incorporates a fuse or a motor driver with an overcurrent protection function so that a current exceeding 24 VDC does not flow to motors and solenoids. The power supply PCB is provided with an overcurrent/overvoltage protection function to shut off the output voltage automatically when a short circuit or trouble occurs on the load side or an overcurrent or overvoltage is generated, thus preventing the power supply circuit from malfunctioning. When the overcurrent/overvoltage protection function has been activated, turn off the Power switch, fix the load-side trouble, and turn on the Power switch again to reset the overcurrent/overvoltage protection function. The fuse (F1) provided in the circuit blows out to shut off the power when an excessive current flows to the AC line. 3-13
