2 1 Background Class 444 Electric Multiple Unit The British Rail Class 444 Desiro electrical multiple units were built between 2003-04. Forty-five of these units were built for express services for South West Trains. They are the flagship of South West Trains. At the dawn of the 21st century, as part of its franchise agreement, South West Trains (SWT) was required to order new trains to replace the old slam-door stock of Classes 411, 412, 421 and 423. Therefore, in April 2001, an order was placed with Siemens AG for 785 vehicles. This order was originally to be split as 100 four-car Class 450/0 outer-suburban units, 32 five-car Class 450/2 inner-suburban units and 45 five-car Class 444 express units. The Class 444 fleet was built by Siemens at its Vienna plant in Austria. Before shipping to Britain via the Channel Tunnel, units were extensively tested at the testtrack at Wildenrath. This extensive testing procedure was performed to reduce the time taken for new trains to enter service by ironing out any problems beforehand. Many other designs of new train, such as the Bombardier Class 375 and Alstom Class 458 units, had been plagued by problems and poor reliability. The Desiro fleet entered service faster than its competitors, but the trains still suffered from teething problems. 13 6 Creating a Class 444 train set 6.1 Scenario Editor (if creating new scenarios) To get the Class 444 ready for selection in a scenario that is not located on the Portsmouth Direct Line, you will need to enable it in the object set filters, which will add it to the rolling stock browser list. Follow these steps: 1. Enter the Scenario Editor. (Note: If a route is locked it will need to be unlocked first before you can enter the Scenario Editor. Unlock by clicking the padlock icon in the bottom right of the screen). 2. Click the Object Set Filter button (the small blue cube on the middle left panel). 3. In the new window which opens on the right hand side, select the following: RSC / Class444Pack01 4. The Class 444 vehicles will now appear in the list of rolling stock. 5. You may need to repeat this process on other routes or scenarios where you wish the Class 444 to be available. 6.2 Assigning Destinations and Numbers For developers wishing to make use of the units in their own scenarios and routes, it is possible to customise the Destination Display during creation of a scenario. This allows the train to correctly display an appropriate destination. In order to display a specific destination, the correct value must entered into the vehicle properties window. This number consists of a 12 digit value containing both a letter and numbers. The 12 digit value is arranged like so: UUUUUUVVVVVD UUUUUU = the Unit number (this is the number displayed on the front of the driving vehicle) VVVVV = the Vehicle number (this is the number displayed on the side of the coach) D = the Destination code (this is one of the destinations below which is case sensitive) Example : 44400663806F (where F is for London Waterloo Stopping Service) So the above value results in unit 450120, with vehicle number 63703, displaying Guildford as the destination
