Congratulations! Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel FasTrack Accessory Activator Pack! This track pack features two Isolated Track sections and one ten-inch Insulated Track section with accessory wires already attached. Connect your single-operation, on-or-off accessories as discussed in this manual, and your passing trains will activate their animation or lights. Understanding the Accessory Activator Pack When assembled in the proper order, the special Isolated and Insulated Track sections have a powered inside rail and only one powered outside rail. The other outside rail is electrically isolated, or dead. If you connect an accessory to the isolated outside rail and the powered center rail (using the wires that are already attached to the track), you can turn on your accessories with your rolling stock by completing an electrical circuit through the wheels and axles. The two rails are bridged through the axles, powering the isolated rail. When the isolated rail is powered, your accessory receives power. This is a simple way to operate Crossing Gates, Crossing Flashers, and other simple on-oroff accessories. Installing the Accessory Activator Pack Choose the location on your layout where you would like your trains to trigger the accessory. When you assemble the track, be sure that the broken outside rails on the Isolated Track sections are positioned on the same side of the track. Also, be sure that the Insulated Track section is placed between the Isolated Track sections. Keep in mind that you may choose to purchase additional Insulated Track sections. Place these sections between the Isolated Track sections so that your train activates the accessory for a longer period of time. Place only Insulated Track sections between the Isolated Track sections. Do not place regular track sections between the Isolated Track sections. Isolated section Insulated section Isolated section NOTE: The breaks must be located on the same side of the tracks. Figure 1. Track arrangement 3

Joining the track sections FasTrack track sections join together easily. With interlocking roadbed sections and large rail tabs, the track fits together securely so you always get good electrical contact. Take a look at Figure 1 to show you how to join the track sections. 1. Line up your two sections of track. 2. Insert the rail tabs into the openings at the ends of the corresponding rails. 3. Press the sections together until the interlocking roadbed snaps into place. Refer to Figure 2. Rail tab Figure 2. Joining the track sections 4. Feed the wires through the notch in the roadbed. Refer to Figure 3. Notch Figure 3. Positioning the wires 4

Connecting your accessory for operation with track power The simplest way to power your accessory is to connect the two wires from the Insulated Track section directly to your accessory s power terminals. Refer to Figure 4. The accessory receives power from the track, operating at track voltage. You must be sure that the track is given enough power to operate the trains and your accessory. To make the proper connections, the ends of the wires should be stripped back 1/8 to 1/4. Caution! Only an adult should perform this task. Use a pair of wire strippers to strip the wires. Always use care when stripping wires. If your accessory has power terminals (thumbscrew or spring-clip terminals), simply attach the wires to those terminals. If the accessory already has two power wires attached, simply splice those wires to the wires on the Insulated Track section. Twist or solder the wires together, then wrap the bare ends of the wires with electrical tape. The accessory will operate only when the track is powered up. Isolated section Insulated section Isolated section Notch ACCESSORY Figure 4. Track power connections 5

Connecting your accessory for operation with fixed voltage Because track power and the power demands placed on your transformer can vary, you may want to use a separate power supply that has been set to a fixed voltage. While the power for the accessory is no longer shared with the track, the Accessory Activator Pack will turn on your accessory. Refer to Figure 5. 1. Separate and remove the wire with the RED quick connector sleeve that is connected to the underside of the Insulated Track section. 2. Slide the RED quick connector sleeve over a connector tab underneath an outer rail, outside of the break (on the isolated section). Connect it to the Common/Ground/U terminal on your separate accessory power supply. There are no tabs on the underside of the Isolated Track sections. Make the connection to a regular track section outside of the break. 3. Connect the other end of the Insulated Track section wire (connected under the insulated outside rail) to a power terminal on your accessory. 4. Attach a separate wire (included with the accessory) to the remaining terminal on the accessory. Connect it to the Power/A terminal on the separate accessory power supply. Regular track Isolated section Insulated section Isolated section Make this connection outside of the break. U A POWER SUPPLY ACCESSORY Connections are made on the underside of the track. Connecting your accessory s switch terminal for operation with fixed voltage Some accessories have multiple terminals. Two terminals serve as power terminals, and the others are used to connect ON/OFF switches. As illustrated in Figure 6, you may connect the accessory switch terminals to the track so that your train will turn on the accessory when it rolls across the break in the Isolated Track section. We recommend that you refer to the accessory owner s manual to help you identify the terminals. 1. Connect the Power/A and Common/Ground/U terminals to your accessory s power terminals. 2. Remove and separate the wire with the RED quick connector sleeve from the underside of the Insulated Track section. 3. Slide the RED quick connector sleeve over a tab underneath an outer rail, outside of the break (on the isolated section). Connect the other end of the wire to the Action/Lighting terminal on the accessory. Refer to the accessory s Owner s Manual to identify this terminal. There are no tabs on the underside of the Isolated Track sections. Make the connection to a regular track section outside of the break. 4. Connect the other end of the Insulated Track section wire (connected under the insulated outer rail) to the Common/Ground terminal on your accessory. Refer to the accessory s Owner s Manual to identify this terminal. Regular track Isolated section Insulated section Isolated section Make this connection outside of the break.
