Necessity of using external CT Internal CT Type (Basic Type): Ground Fault Protection Protect 20%~100% of the ACB rated current. In case of a large-capacity ACB, the ground fault operating current will also increase. For example, in case of 4000A ACB, the minimum ground fault relay current is 4000A x 20% = 800A. Installation of an external CT is recommended to control the ground sensitivity current, and it is optional to protect the ground fault (leakage). 15

MBH ELECTRIC AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER ZONE SELECTIVE INTERLocKING A Zone Selective Interlocking function is intended to protect the load equipments when a fault occurs. It minimizes the delay time and reduces damage to the air circuit breaker and load equipments. Following the operation of short-time delay or ground fault functions, in case of a fault, the concerned protective breaker sends ZSI signal after tripping to prevent upstream breakers from useless tripping. Hence the ZSI enforce continuity of service and reduce downtime of critical loads. In order to eliminate the fault condition, the ACB over-current relay performs an instantaneous trip to clear the fault. The upstream breaker, receiving the ZSI signal, shall refrain from tripping for a short preset time period under the Short-Time Delay or Ground Fault Time Delay functions. Upstream breakers that do not receive the ZSI signal shall trip instantaneously. For proper operation of ZSI, downstream breaker tripping time should be set lower than upstream breaker tripping time under Over-Current, Short Time Delay and Ground Fault Functions. In case of Fault-A: ACB1 independently performs the instantaneous trip. In case of Fault-B: ACB2 performs the instantaneous trip and ACB1 delays till the set time, then perform the instantaneous trip if the fault current is not cleared. 16

STANDARD APPLICATIONS

MBH ELECTRIC AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER OPERATING CONDITIONS Temperature Range Use within the range of max. +40 C and min. -5 C. The average 24-hour temperature should not exceed +35 C. Altitude 2000m or below. Environmental Condition Relative humidity should be lower than 85% at 20 C. Relative humidity should never exceed 90%. Avoid storage in the presence of oil gas, ammonia gas and corrosive gas. Storage Temperature Store it at max. +60 C and min. -20 C. The average 24-hour temperature should not exceed +35 C. Special Operational Environment If the ACB is installed in a high temperature and humid environment, electrical insulation and mechanical performance will be degraded. In this case, it is recommended to increase anti-corrosion resistance. Derating should be considered if ambient temperature exceeds 40 degrees. If the ACB is installed at altitudes above 2000m, heat emission, voltage, conduction capacity and breaking capacity will be reduced. Insulation level will decrease depending on air pressure. C CAUTION: Please consult our representatives for operations outside the specified ambient conditions. 34

www.mbhelectric.de STANDARD PROTECTION FOR ELECTRICAL NETWORKS Standard use of ACB MBH XLS ACBs are used in a wide range of industrial applications to protect equipment, conductors and devices in low voltage distribution networks. Short Circuit Breaking Capacity Nominal, overloads and short circuit currents must be determined in order to properly select and setup the ACB. The MBH XLS ACB must be properly sized to interrupt the maximum short circuit current as well as the lowest or weakest short circuit current at its point of installation. Protective Features The MBH XLS is equipped with a number of protection functions: Overload Protection Function: This feature allows the user the possibility of accurately adjusting the nominal current setting within the range of 0.5xIe. This feature also enables overload setting Ir. Time Short-Circuit Protection Function: The user must take into consideration the inrush currents, weak short circuit currents and fault current while setting of the Time Short Circuit Protection Function. The MBH XLS is designed to interrupt the faulted current within the required time frame while offering the needed selectivity across multiple levels and avoiding unwanted tripping on normal inrush currents. Instantaneous Short Circuit Protection: This feature enables instantaneous tripping action against high short circuit currents. The user usually sets the tripping current as a multiple of the primary overload adjustment. Ground Fault Protection Function: This feature grants the user the possibility of protection against ground fault currents thus protecting against damages to equipment and personnel. Generator Protection The protection device needs to be adjusted adequately in order to ensure quick and proper response against excessive generator overloading and short circuit conditions. Recommended timed short-circuit setting is 2.5xIr. 35

MBH ELECTRIC AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER Motor Protection The user should setup the ACB protective features such as to avoid tripping starting motor current. The following settings for timed short circuit device of a power circuit breaker are recommended: 12xIr with 50ms delay. 12xIe if instantaneous. The overload protection should incorporate a re-energization delay function in order to allow cooling of conductors and motors following an overload period. The user should consider including additional protective functions against motor operational anomalies such as phase loss detection and blocked rotor. Transformer Protection Transformers generally draw high inrush current upon energization. The peak inrush current, during the first half cycle, can reach values up to 15 to 25 times the normal transformer rated current. Protective devices should discriminate between inrush currents and short circuit currents and should not trip during energization. The following settings are recommended for transformer protection: 8xIr delayed 30ms. 15xIe~20xIe instantaneous.
