Safety Notes Please remember the turbine engine is not a toy and has the potential to cause bodily harm to you and others if misused. The following guidelines should be read carefully and adhered to. 1. Always keep a CO2 or similar fire extinguisher close when starting and operating the engine 2. Always protect eyes and ears during the starting procedure. 3. Be aware of the extreme intake suction hazard, we advise the use of a suitable commercial wire mesh Foreign Object Damage guard to protect the engine intake. Ensure you have no loose items of clothing (ties, etc.) or equipment which can readily be sucked into the engine intake, even from adjacent to the engine. 4. Always operate your engine in open air away from confined spaces as the engine exhaust contains gases which can cause asphyxiation and nuisance smells. 5. Do not touch the engine whilst it is running. Turbines rotate at a very high rpm and the engine casing and exhaust can reach very high temperatures. Ensure anything affected by heat is kept well clear of the engine and exhaust during operation. 6. Never use the engine near to sources of flammable gases, liquids or materials. 7. Keep unauthorized persons, spectators, children and animals well away from the starting area (at least 30ft or 10 metre away). 8. Always handle turbine fuel and oil with care as they are highly flammable. Store them in appropriate label containers. Never dispose inappropriately. We recommend the use of suitable disposable protective gloves for the mixing of turbine oil/fuel. LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. ATJ TURBINES 6

Warning Higher loads occur when driving an R/C aircraft model with a turbine engines compared to equally powerful drives like propellers or impellers. This is a result of considerably higher air speeds caused by jet propulsion. Maximum speeds under jet propulsion can exceed 200 mph, depending on the model. We would like to remind you that the AMA has issued strict rules regarding maximum speed for operating turbine powered RC models. Please refer to the AMA regulations from the link posted above. During installation, seal the intake and nozzle, as well as kerosene joints to keep dust and debris out of the engine. LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. ATJ TURBINES 7

Before starting the engine 1. Fuel and fuel tank, pump, shut-off kerosene valves, all cables and turbine engine must be checked for correct. 2. All loose parts in the intake area must be fixed in a way they can never be sucked in. Loose parts or dirt can damage the turbine engine. We recommend use of a FOD screen. 3. Have a fire extinguisher (CO2) within reach! 4. Use only Jet A-1 or kerosene or Diesel with a 5% ratio of oil ( fully Synthetic turbine oil). We recommend Mobil Jet Oil II 5. The Fuel system must not be leaking. 6. Start engine must be into the wind. always keep the turbine with the nozzle facing downwards right before starting. 7. Charge engine battery. After shutting down the engine Move jet model with the nose facing the wind. Wait until the cooling down process is completed, it will take few minutes depending on the outside air temperature. The cooling process after engine shut down. During this process, the electric power supply of the receiver and the ECU must not be turned off. Do not touch the turbine during the cool-down because the danger of burning still exists. All tube connections must be inspected for leakage after each flight. The fuel tanks must be emptied in case of extreme outside air temperatures or when there is no further operations planned for the day (danger of explosion!). LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. ATJ TURBINES 8

Installation turbine engine 1. The engine should be mounted using the ATJ engine mount or an approved equivalent. The securing strap should be tightened gently so as not to mark the engine casing. 2. Fuel FASTO fitting should be routed similarly clear of the intake. 3. The fuel pump should be mounted at least 300mm away from the front of the engine. The pump can emit electrical pulses that cause the speed sensor to transmit incorrect rpm information to the ECU. The fuel pump should be mounted with the spindle in the vertical position with the motor uppermost. In the event of any fuel seeping from the pump this will not pass through the electric motor. Note the pump is supplied fitted with built in suppression to reduce radio frequency noise. 4. The centre of the fuel tank should be mounted laterally, as near to the centre of gravity (CG) of the model as possible. This will minimize the CG shift as the fuel is used during flight. 5. Any air ducting to the inlet of the engine must have a minimum area of 95mm square. 6. If an extended exhaust duct is required, it should be approved by ATJ turbine. We have found that an exhaust over 90 mm diameter gives optimum engine performance, base on turbine engine thrust and size. 7. Extreme care should be exercised to ensure that no foreign object, loose parts of the model. Or debris is allowed to enter the compartment where the engine is installed. We recommend testing the engine on a test stand prior airframe installation. You should have a clear idea of how to arrange the components needed to run the engine. The main issue is the fuel tank, you will need to arrange the CG in the centre of the tank and adjust the receiver and ECU batteries to achieve the correct location. LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. ATJ TURBINES 28

Maintenance and repair work ATJ turbines only need little maintenance under normal operating conditions. Some points must be considered to guarantee faultless operations of the engine. This includes regular cleaning and inspection. Dirt and grease deposit can cause slippage of the starter clutch. If this happens, clean the O-ring and the compressor nut with a degreaser like alcohol. Fuel tube and filter between the pump and the turbine should be cleaned every 5 hours of operation. Do this very carefully and make sure that no dirt will enter the fuel supply tube. Destruction of the turbine could result! Make sure fuel system no leaking. Cover the intake and nozzle areas when the turbine is not in use. Keep the turbine in a dry and dust-free environment when it is not used for a longer time. Check the battery condition regularly. Your turbine maintenance interval is at 25 hours. After this time as well as after a special event (crash, FOD.. etc.) the turbine should be returned to the factory service. Repair and maintenance work which include the disassembly of the turbine must only be performed by professional personnel. Please contact Leading Jet Turbine Co., Ltd with all service related questions. Maintenance and repair work performed by non authorized personnel will void the warranty. LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. List of ECU Warning message codes RC SIGNAL LOST/INCORRECT: The signal received from the RX is wrong (outside calibration margin) or absent. PUMP LIMIT REACHED: The ECU have increased the pump power up to the value set on the Pump Limit parameter, but the engine hasn t arrived to full power. Causes could be flat battery, fuel restriction or anything that can cause a reduction in the fuel flow. xxxx OVERLOAD: A excessive current is detected flowing to the specified output. Diagnoses: During engine operation the FADEC measures and stores all the engine operating parameters recorded during the last the 51 minutes of operation. These measures can be downloaded later to a PC to study the behavior of the engine in flight and to diagnose any possible problems. Also, after each cycle of operation, the FADEC stores the last cause of shut down and the value of RPM, temperature and pump power at the moment of shutdown. In order to access these measures, it is necessary to reinitialize the FADEC (shut down and power-up). Set the trim down (Trim Low) and push the left button on the display. The FADEC will show the cause of shutdown and the measured values at the moment of shut down. These are as follows: Diagnosis messages: User Off: The engine has been shut down because it has received the shut down command from the transmitter. Fail Safe: The engine has been shut down because of loss of the control signal from the transmitter. Once the Ecu detects a loss or invalid RC signal for over 0,5s, it sets engine power to idle, and if after another 1,5seconds a valid signal is still not received the engine is shut down. Speed Low: The engine has been shut down because the RPM has dropped below a minimum. Cause could be lack of fuel, air bubbles, problem with the batteries, or defective RPM sensor. Flame Out: The engine has been shut down because the temperature has dropped below the minimum of (100ºC). (Usually a thermocouple failure). LEADING JET TURBINE Co., Ltd. ATJ TURBINES 31
