S UMITOMO Mid-Size All-Electrics and Hybrids Recognized worldwide for electric injection molding machinery technology, Sumitomo sets the standard in precision, energy-efficient, mid-range tonnage machines offering molders a choice to best meet their needs: The SES Series features four, Sumitomo-built, AC servo motors with digital-to-digital, closed-loop control. All four motions plasticizing, injection, clamping and ejection are controlled by these motors. The field-proven, affordable, high-performance SES Series all-electrics, from 255 to 660 US tons, for automotive, media packaging, medical, consumer products and a wide range of other applications The new SE-HY Series accumulator-assisted hybrid electrics, from 385 to 495 US tons, for packaging and other ultra-high-speed, highproductivity applications. (Please consult your Sumitomo Sales Representative for availability of additional model sizes.) The SE-HY Series uses three, Sumitomo-built, AC servo motors with digital-to-digital, closed-loop control for plasticizing, clamping and ejection. Accumulator-assisted hydraulics, with a digital servo valve and full closed-loop control, are employed for injection unit displacement, injection, hold pressure, back pressure and screw pull back.

What advanced technology should be. Shared advantages With the exception of the accumulator-assisted hydraulics on the SE-HY, the SES and SE-HY are similarly designed and share many important advantages. Precision repeatability and applications flexibility The SES and SE-HY deliver a level of precision and repeatability in which the set points and actual values are virtually indistinguishable from each other. Results for shot weight accuracy and repeatability yield a typical deviation-to-mean ratio of less than 0.02%. Injection units, which are selectable in some models sizes, deliver the power to handle a wide range of tough application requirements. Cost-efficient operation With highly energyefficient servo motors using permanent magnet stators, the SES and SE-HY draw power only as needed and provide significant, quantifiable energy savings. Demand on cooling systems is lower and expenditures related to the purchase of hydraulic oil and filters, oil clean-up and disposal are reduced. Combined with the exceptional precision repeatability of these machines, the result is less cost and higher yield for improved overall productivity. High-speed, field-proven, double toggle design Over 15,000 SG/SGM, SES and SED Series machines in operation around the world today are a testament to the high-speed, rugged reliability of Sumitomo s double-toggle clamp design. This same field-proven design is also featured in the new SE-HY, ensuring years of trouble-free, high-speed operation. Plus both Series feature low-vibration, fast, smooth mold open/close, precision mold protection and the ability to optimize cycle times with selectable ramping modes. T he Injection Unit Start with high injection pressures, high speeds and full multi-function, simultaneous operation. Add exceptional precision, repeatability and energy efficiency. The result is outstanding injection performance and high overall productivity. To ensure against problems associated with belt wear, the belts used are up to one-and-a-half times wider than competitors belts, and are constructed of polyurethane reinforced with a tough, proprietary synthetic material. The SES Series all-electric features two Sumitomobuilt AC servo motors with full closed-loop control and digital sensors that give the injection unit its speed, precision and energy efficiency. The servo motor for injection uses a load cell to provide feedback that dictates the speed and torque required for precision injection, hold pressure and back pressure. The screw drive motor works together with a position transducer. These specially developed, high-capacity, belted motors deliver sufficient torque while keeping the machine reasonably sized and priced. For models over 260 US tons, the use of two, large-load capacity, ball screws in the injection unit motor provides highly efficient power transmission and outstanding durability compared to single screw motors. A selection of injection unit sizes is offered for models over 300 US tons. For packaging, cutlery and media case applications, the SE230S is equipped with a higher power motor for injection, delivering injection pressures up to 2730 kg/cm 2. The SE-HY Series hybrid electric is designed for packaging and other ultra-high-speed, highproductivity applications in the 385- to 495-ton range. For the injection unit, the SE-HY features an AC servo motor for plasticizing and accumulator-assisted hydraulics for injection unit displacement, injection, hold pressure, back pressure and screw pull back. Injection rates for the SE-HY range from 3141 to 4021 cm 3 /sec dependent on model and screw diameter selected.

What advanced technology should be. Shared advantages The SE-HY s accumulator-assisted hydraulics are similar in design to the hydraulics employed on Sumitomo s widely field-proven SGM Series ultra-high-speed toggle machines. On the SE-HY, two accumulators work together with a digital servo valve and highly sophisticated measuring and feedback devices for fast-response, precision injection control. The direct interaction between the velocity transducer and this servo valve provides faster response for injection control. The large-capacity, bladder-type accumulators ensure stable pressure control, eliminate the need for special nitrogen tanks and reduce variation due to ambient temperature changes. The oil and nitrogen pressure sensor circuit provides consistent pressure control and smooth transition. PID control of oil temperature delivers uniform response for accurate, repeatable profiling. The SE-HY is also equipped with an in-line return filter and a suction strainer with blockage alarm. For accurate, stable control of shot size, three plasticizing ramps soft, standard and sharp allow the operator to set the plasticizing acceleration and deceleration response. Unerring injection velocity control from low to high speeds, and exceptional velocity response, are provided by the use of direct digital control with digital sensors that do not require conversion to analog. Ramping of the velocity can also be tailored by selectable soft, standard and sharp ramping modes. And the excellent linearity from low- to high-range velocities allows precision molding of diverse applications, from thick-walled lenses to thin-walled complicated housings and visually critical parts. The PID temperature control system is designed to optimize melt conditions, regardless of changes in the molding environment. With 2-second sampling and 0.1 C settable barrel zones, this system shortens heat-up time and ensures precision temperature control. The motor used for plasticizing on the SE350HY is a directdrive, beltless motor. To keep the machine reasonably sized, the SE450HY uses a belted motor. Programmable switchover from velocity to hold selectable by position, time or pressure delivers precision filling of the cavity. Hold pressure, with the ability for ramping, is settable and accurate to within 1kgf/cm 2 from 0 to 2800 depending on machine size. An internal resin temperature monitor and an inline, needle-type nozzle shut-off are available as options for optimum control of the melt and high-precision shot control.

T he Clamp For clamping, the SES and SE-HY provide the highperformance combination of Sumitomo s all-electric technology with the company s field-proven, doubletoggle clamp design for mold open/close operation that s remarkably fast, smooth, precise and energy efficient. The clamp unit s rigidity and durability, verified using finite element analysis methods, are your assurance of years of round-the-clock, troublefree, high-speed molding. The clamp unit features two, digitally controlled AC servo motors for clamp and ejection operation. Precision clamping is assured by full, closed-loop control of mold open/close velocity and position. As with the injection unit, belted motors with highly efficient power transmission and exceptionally durable belts are used. For the SE-HY, a higher power motor for clamping delivers mold open/close speeds up to 1260 mm/sec on the SE350HY and 1140 mm/sec for the SE450HY. Compared with competitors hydromechanical clamp hybrid machines, the SE-HY achieves these fast speeds with significantly less power consumption. The SE230S, designed primarily for packaging, cutlery and media case applications, features exceptionally fast clamp movement at 1300 mm/sec and a 1.7- second dry cycle time. The other SES models also offer fast mold open/close speeds, ranging from 770 to 1000 mm/sec dependent on model size.

What advanced technology should be. Optional multi-toggle clamp force control offers two modes: a high-cycle mode in which filling can begin during clamping; and a gas-release mode in which filling can begin during low-pressure clamping. This unique feature offers the benefits of a shorter cycle time and improved part quality. Ease of maintenance Shared advantages To help molders tailor machine operation to specific mold requirements, the SES and SE-HY provide three-stage mold open/close speed control. Additionally, selectable ramping modes (soft, standard or sharp) can be used to optimize clamp open and close profiles for fast cycles with shock-free movement. For optimum life of the ball screws, toggle pins and tie bar bushings, both the SES and SE-HY are equipped with a highly reliable, automatic grease supply through a valve-type progressive distribution system. This system uses an externally mounted pump unit with easy-to-load grease cartridges that can be changed without interrupting machine operation. Additionally, the grease level is monitored via sensor, and the machine shuts down automatically if the grease level becomes too low. Clamp and ejector operation are monitored by precise optical encoders for maximum mold protection and consistent molding cycles. An important factor for take-out robots and 3-plate molds, both machines provide mold open stop position accuracy of less than 20 microns. With lowpressure mold protection settable to 0.3 mm and digital setting of mold open/close positions to 0.1 mm, you re assured of precision mold protection and no banging even at high speeds. And roller-type moving platen supports, a standard feature, offer high load-bearing capability. Excellent clamp force linearity, from low to high tonnage, enables optimum setting of clamp force to suit parts with different projected areas. Graphite-impregnated bushings, also field-proven on the SES and SG/SGM machines, significantly reduce toggle lubrication requirements. That means less maintenance, less grease use and fewer disposal problems. Other ease of maintenance features include: location of the pull-in cylinder under the injection unit, a swing-away control panel, selectable Auto Purge, and on-screen displays of the inspection guide, I/O check and maintenance log.

T he N-VII Control Easy-to-use and highly functional, Sumitomo control systems are recognized for building operator confidence and helping increase overall molding productivity. Both the SES and SE-HY are equipped with the popular N-VII control system with high-intensity, fullcolor, TFT liquid crystal display. Standard features include quality monitoring of 10 parameters, multifunction production control and real-time charts and graphs that demonstrate the machine s precision profiling and closed-loop control capabilities. The design of the N-VII control promotes ease-ofuse in a variety of ways: Injection analysis The Analysis Screen displays velocity, pressure and screw position graphs or 14 other parameters selectable in combinations of 4 at a time. This screen helps you analyze initial molding conditions and the results from changes in process parameters and also assists you with quality control. Eye-level, platen-mounted control panel ergonomically positioned for easy reading and operation The most commonly accessed screens are available instantly with the touch of a single key Screen-prompted setup assistance and autoprogramming of initial molding conditions Convenient data storage capability including 40 machine setups in the control unit and up to 20 machine setups per memory card on the optional external storage system Keys, rather than membrane-type switches, ensure fast, accurate data entry, increased reliability and life of the panel Metric or English units available by selection

What advanced technology should be. Selectable profiling The Injection Screen gives you three selectable plasticizing ramps that allow the operator to set screw speed acceleration and deceleration response in sharp, standard or soft modes. A digital readout of screw position, to 0.01 mm, can also be read on this screen. For applications where multi-step injection is preferred or required, the Injection Screen can be used to select either a 2-velocity/2-pressure basic profile or a 5-velocity/4-pressure profile. Selectable auto-ramping modes In addition to displaying current mold open/close and ejector positions, the Clamp Screen gives you three stages of mold opening and closing velocities. This screen also lets you select three autoramping modes sharp, standard and soft to optimize cycle times while maintaining shock-free movement. The capability for precision settings is another advantage of the N-VII control. On the Clamp Screen, for example, low pressure mold protection is settable to 0.3 mm, mold open/close positions are settable to 0.1 mm and pressure is settable to 1%.

Easy setup The straightforward design of the Setup Screen assists you in both the setup of new resins and molds as well as defining the parameters for the purging process, including choice of Auto Purge or Gate Purge for hot runner molding. Precision temperature control Easy temperature setup and monitoring, combined with excellent PID control, ensure optimum melt conditions. The N-VII control system gives you up to six zones of barrel temperature control to an accuracy of 0.1 C. Convenient, single screen overview (optional) The Overall Screen clearly displays all the main settings at a glance: clamp, injection and temperature. Molding conditions can be set and changed without ever switching to other screens. Many molders opt to run the machine from this single screen. Quality control The N-VII control allows you to monitor a full range of machine functions for accurate quality control and followup documentation. The Quality Control Screen lets you quickly review the actual value of the last 50 shots and the average of the last 30 shots.
