The Extremes of Number One The Wide Receiver Matrix by Mike Herman, exclusive to Footballguys.com The ideal fantasy wide receiver is easy to describe. He gets the large majority of the targets in a high-powered offense that loves to throw the ball. Unfortunately, many receivers do not meet some or any of those criteria. Some receivers are not their team s primary target. Some play for teams that are more balanced in their play calling or that prefer to run the ball. Some play for teams that are average overall or that are offensively-challenged. So how do different wide receivers compare to one another based on these varying factors? Based on data from 2001 thru 2008, following are the average year end fantasy rankings for wide receivers based on their situation. The numbers have been interpolated and extrapolated in order to fill in a few categories with no or little supporting data, and to fix a couple abnormalities. The situations incorporate the following categories: Distribution Pattern is how the passing yardage is distributed among the team s players (including TEs and RBs) Go-to-guy: Duo: The WR1 gets over 35% of the yardage, and WR2 gets at least 20% less or is under 20% total. WR1 and WR2 are within about 5% of each other, and are in the mid 20 s to low 30 s percentage. WR3 percentage is under 10%. Typical: The top three receivers are 30%, 20%, 10% plus/minus several percent each. Committee: WR3 is within 10% of WR1 Offensive Focus is the number of running plays vs. the number of passing plays. Pass: Team runs the ball under 45% of the time Balanced: Team runs the ball 45% to 49.9% of the time Run: Team runs the ball at least 50% of the time Team Overall Offense Grade The grade is based on the team s total offensive fantasy scoring from all positions, using FBG standard scoring. Larry Fitzgerald was the top wide receiver for Arizona in 2008 and the top fantasy WR in the NFL. The Cardinals were a top five offense that threw the mall more frequently than any other team. Johnnie Lee Higgins was the top wide receiver for Oakland in 2008, yet finished only 64 th amongst all fantasy WRs. The Raiders were a bottom five offense and focused on the run.
