ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MANUAL SHADING 101 Let s go back to basics: a manual roller shade is a very simple affair when executed correctly. When structured in such a way where the components complement each other instead of fight one another, you have a solar shading system that is functional, beautiful, and will stand the test of time. You have shade that adds to the whole room package without detracting from it. The Clutch At the heart of every manual shade lies a clutched control mechanism. A proper roller shade clutch allows the shade to be positioned and held in place automatically as soon as the user releases the control chain. Our clutch system utilizes six heavy duty tension springs encased in specially formulated high density plastic to effect this automatic braking. The drive housing interlocks into the aluminum tube and covers the springs that rest on the inner core. Rotational force from the user is transferred through the chain drive, to the spring cams, releasing the spring tension and allowing the drive housing to rotate; thus moving the shade up or down. This design method is very simple, strong, and effective.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MANUAL CLUTCHES Design Our clutch systems come in two different forms. The first is rated for small to medium shades and the second is rated for medium to large shades. Both clutch systems utilize the same brackets, endcaps, fascia, and with even the same tubes. The biggest difference between the two clutches is design- the larger 30 pound clutch uses a larger chain drive gear to increase the leverage, and thus lessen the pull force required, to move shades of higher mass. PS20 Clutch A PS20 Clutch is a manual clutch rated at 20 pounds of lifting force. Designed to fit a 1.5 tube or a 2 tube using an adaptor, and used with 4 fascia this clutch is very versatile and can accommodate small to medium sized shading systems. PS30 Clutch A PS30 Clutch is a manual clutch rated at 30 pounds of lifting force. Designed to fit a 2 tube or a 2.5 tube using an adaptor, and used with 4 fascia, this clutch is very versatile and can accommodate medium to large sized shading systems. The HD version of this clutch accommodates a Pure Balance Mechanism for very large and heavy shades.

SHADE COMPONENTS TUBES Pure Shade tubes for manual clutch systems come in three sizes to accommodate shading systems of varying weights and sizes. 1.5 Aluminum Tube Used with PS20 Manual Clutch Systems for shades smaller than 72 wide, the 1.5 tube is made of T6 aluminum and has a 0.063 wall thickness. 2 Aluminum Tube Used with PS20 Manual Clutch Systems for shades from 72 wide to about 120 wide, and as standard for a motorized shade system. The 2.0 tube is made of T6 aluminum with internal ribs for additional strength and rigidity. 2.5 Aluminum Tube This 2.5-inch tube is used with the PS30 Manual for large shades and the standard motorized shade system. It is made of T6 aluminum and has a 0.082 inch wall thickness. For manual shades, it can be used with the Pure Balance mechanism. There is a spline opening built-in for attaching fabric.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MOUNTING AND BRACKETS Without Fascia Pure Shade brackets are universal and interchangeable; each bracket can be used on the clutch side or the idle side. Additionally, each bracket can be mounted inside the window frame (side mount), to the wall, or to the ceiling. Shown below are the mounting methods for non-fascia brackets. With Fascia A fascia or valance may be desired to give the manual roller shade installation a sleek finished look to compliment the decor. Pure Shade fascia is a snap-on aluminum valance that covers the shade and mounting hardware. The valances are available in an array of designer colors: white, bone, bronze and clear anodized. There also is a selection of custom colors. The fascia is designed to attach securely to the Pure Shade bracket system and are easy to maintain. The fascia brackets, like our standard brackets, are universal and interchangeable. Each can be used on the clutch side or the idle side. Each can be mounted inside the window frame (the side mount), to the wall or to the ceiling. Ceiling mount is shown below:

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS SHADE COMPONENTS FASCIA Fascia is an aluminum valance that is designed to cleanly snap onto specially designed shade mounting brackets. Designed to cover the shade roll and mounting hardware, shade fascia provides a sleek finished look. 4 box brackets mount to side, ceiling, or rear wall. Fascia is available in 3, 4, 5 and 7 extrusions for different shade systems: manual, motorized, dual tube, and dual motorized. Designed for medium to large shades and thicker tube diameters, the 4 square fascia, our most popular is shown at the right. The 4 fascia is available in: White, Bone, Bronze, Black and Brushed Aluminum. Available in custom colors and as fabric wrapped; we custom wrap the fabric in the same fabric as is used in the shade band. SIDE AND SILL CHANNEL Channels are a way to capture the edge of the fabric, and guide it along a wall of window mullion. Mainly used in installations requiring blackout conditions, side and sill channels can also be used on a door to keep a shade in place while maintaining its ability to operate easily. Our two piece design snap together to create a clean finish absent of any screw heads or button cap covers. These channels can be mounted to the face of a wall or window mullion, or along the inside edge of the window frame. Dimensions are 2.25 inches by 1 inch. Standard designer finishes are white, bone, bronze, black and clear anodized. Custom colors also are available for an additional charge.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS 5 INCH FASCIA SYSTEM Able to accommodate dual shades or a single large shade, our new 5 fascia system offers the ultimate in flexibility by allowing a single size fascia to cover more than one shade type. Its durable elegance offers robust hardware with clean aesthetics. This versatile fascia system provides for reverse roll conditions and the ability to use a matching length of fascia along the back side of the shade to further reduce light penetration when blackout is desired. Single Shade Configuration Used for large shades, generally motorized, the single shade configuration shown enable much longer shade band drops. Maximum shade widths can reach 192 wide, and with proper fabric selection, maximum drop lengths can get to 300 long. Manual components are shown, but to utilize the full capacity of this 5 inch system, motorization is required. Brackets allow ceiling, wall, or side mount capabilities. Bracket end caps are optional Dual Shade Configuration A step beyond the capabilities of our Dual Lite system, the 5 inch fascia system can handle a larger shade tubes and can therefore fit large windows and large shade band requirements. Band length will be more limited in the dual configuration as compared to the single detailed above. Maximum shade widths can reach 120 wide, and with proper fabric selection, maximum drop lengths can get to 120 long. components are shown, but to utilize the full capacity of this 5 inch system, motorization is required. Brackets allow ceiling, wall, or side mount capabilities. Bracket end caps are optional

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS THE SHADE GUARDIAN Invented and Patented by an industry veteran, the Shade Guardian is a revolutionary device designed to protect manual chain operated roller shading systems from general misuse/abuse and prolong their lifespan. Torn fabric, broken clutches, snapped idle ends; all signs of mistreated shades and something facility maintenance professionals are all too familiar with and something they spend a great deal of time repairing. The Shade Guardian attaches to the clutch side of the shade and drastically decreases room unavailability due to shade maintenance issues. Able to be easily installed with new shade or retrofitted to existing, the Shade Guardian is a simple and cost effective way to save the shades in any high traffic facility. DEFENSE BY DESIGN The number one cause of damaged and broken roller shading systems is user abuse. In a commercial environment, window treatments are used by people who are either not familiar with the operation of a roller shade, or let s face it, just plain don t care. These users will grab the control chain and give it a yank expecting the shade to run up or down the window in one fell swoop. This action is all fine and good until the upper or lower limits of the shade are reached and instead of gently fitting into place and coming to a stop, the stop ball slams into the clutch. Depending upon the design of the clutch and size of the shade, this repeated abuse can be withstood for a time, but at some point the ball stop breaks the lower guard of the clutch and rams up into the geared mechanism. Usually this results in the shade jamming into a useless a fixed position. Thus resulting in a call to maintenance; and a room out of service which can cost hundreds of dollars! The Shade Guardian changes this scenario by giving that stop ball a cushioned place to be captured. Breakage happens when all the mass of a quickly rotating shade is required to come to an immediate halt. We ve fixed this by building a patented spring loaded pocket where the ball can be captured, brought to a gentle halt, and returned to a resting spot. Available in White, Black, and soon Grey, the Shade Guardian will change the way your maintenance crews look at window shading forever. Call your Fabtex Concierge today for more details and a demonstration.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MOTORIZED OPTIONS Motorized Roller Shades are the most advanced and cost effective way to control interior environments for optimum energy efficiency and occupant comfort. In addition to eliminating the need to manually adjust heavy or hard-to-reach window coverings Motorized Shades provide privacy while controlling sunlight, glare and UV rays. Another benefit of motorization in a public setting is the minimization of maintenance. Manual shades require a physical touch and can therefore be operated improperly and even abused, leading to greater levels of wear and tear. On the other hand, a motorized shade is never touched by the user as its operation occurs across the room by pressing a button on a wall or a remote. It is because of this simple dynamic, motorized shades tend to last two to three times longer than their manual counterparts. Taken to a greater degree, motorized shades connected to a central system not only reduce loads on HVAC and increase building efficiency, but add a touch of elegance and luxury to your guest s experience. Imagine a non-occupied guest room: freshly cleaned, lights are off, thermostat is set to minimum levels, and windows coverings are closed to both thermally insulate and protect the room from harsh UV rays. Now, as a guest checks in, a button at the main desk is pressed that prepares the room for guest entry; lights come up, window coverings open to provide optimum views, and air conditioning comes on as the thermostat brings the room up to optimum comfort levels. Every space has different needs, requirements, and goals. For that reason alone, there is no one size fits all motor, but there is a motor to fit your specific application Standard AC Hardwired Motor The basic workhorse of the line, our standard motor boasts a 5 wire configuration and built in parallel wiring capability. Best suited to new construction this motor runs and is switched purely off 110VAC. All switches are hardwired directly to the motor or group of motors they control. Pros: Economically priced for motors and switches. Smooth, quiet operation. Great choice for new building projects seeking basic, no-frills motorized shading systems. Cons: Requires all connections to be hardwired. All wiring is high voltage; 110VAC. Plug-in AC Motor with Wireless Controls Perhaps the most versatile and popular in the line, our RTM motor series combines simple, plug-in capability, with the versatility of wireless, place anywhere controls. A good choice when power (a wall outlet) is easily obtained or already existing. Pros: Smooth, quiet operation. Utilizes a standard 110VAC plug. Wireless controls- remotes and wall switches available. Good choice for retrofitting existing windows. Cons: Control range, 50-100 feet. Not a good choice for large groups of motors. Requires 110VAC power.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MOTORIZED OPTIONS Battery Motor with Wireless Controls A popular variant of the RTM line, our battery powered motors are designed to be completely stand-alone devices. Each features a Lithium-ion Battery pack built into the motor itself. Simply install the shade into the window pocket with the motor, and the controls are 100% wireless. Charge the battery via a wall charger (similar to a cell phone) or via a small solar panel installed into the window between the shade header and the glass. Pros: Zero wiring required! Excellent choice for retrofitting existing windows in existing buildings. The solar option provides for true off-the-grid technology with zero wiring required! Cons: Control range, 50-100 feet. AC Motor with Low Voltage Wired Controls An excellent choice for new projects with a bit of preplanning for wiring. These are smooth, quiet, and powerful motors. Can be setup to be plug-in or hardwired to a junction box with a switch for master power cutoff. Separate low voltage cable can be run from motor to any low voltage switch location. One switch can control any number of motors grouped together. Pros: Smooth, quiet operation, and powerful. Great choice for new building projects. Control wiring is low voltage. Cons: Requires AC power to each motor and low voltage wire runs to all controls. AC Motor with Digital System Integration The premier choice for full building automation controls and system integration. From full sun and daylight management to integrated wall switches and sun sensors. These are smooth, quiet, and powerful motors. Can be setup to be plug-in or hardwired to a junction box with a switch for master power cutoff. Separate low voltage cable can be run from motor to any low voltage switch location. One switch can control any number of motors grouped together. Pros: Full building control is achieved using our own Digital Interface, or through any robust building management system, back net controls, or lighting control system via RS-232, RS-485, and dry contact. Increases occupant comfort and building environmental efficiency. Cons: Requires 110VAC power to each motor and a low voltage CAT-5 network across the motor system.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS MEASURING AND INSTALLATION Standard Deductions Fabric deductions are necessary to allow room for the clutch, idle end and brackets. Fabric deductions will vary based on the shade options selected and the mounting brackets used. Standard Fabric Deductions: Left Side 3/4 Right Side 3/4" An additional 1/8 inch overall deduction is made from the fascia on an inside mounted shade. This small deduction ensures the fascia will fit into place smoothly and not gouge the inside edges of the window pocket Preventing Light Gap Normally there is a light gap between the fabric edge and the side wall of the window opening but in most installations not requiring total blackout, the light leakage is not significant. However, the gap between the edge of the fabric band and side wall of the window opening can become an issue when it is larger than the depth of the window frame itself, thus allowing direct sunlight to pass. The way to eliminate this light gap is to install side channels or switching to an outside mount configuration and increasing the width of the shade by 2 inches on both sides. Speak with a Fabtex expert to determine the best solution for your specific needs. Installation Utilizing all of the proper safety gear; gloves, goggles, boots, and proper clothing, review the shade package contacts. Next, select the proper fastener type based upon the structure and composition of the mounting surface. Once selected, mount the shade brackets. Ensure they are secure and slide the roller shade into place, idle end first. Compress the idle end, lift up the clutch end, and set into the bracket, allowing it to set and catch the clutch tabs. If fascia is included, snap it securely into the brackets. Finally install the chain holddown and evaluate for proper operation. For more detailed instaructions on the specific details of your project s product, contact the Fabtex Installation Department. Or visit us online at www.fabtex.com.

ROLLER SHADE DETAILS CARE AND CLEANING Operational Care Roller shades are durable window treatments but are still susceptible to breakage from abuse. Always exercise care when raising or lowering manual shades. Larger shades will require more effort and smaller ones less so. Always raise and lower in a smooth continuous fashion. Jerking on the chain in hard hurried motion will lead to damage and eventually breakage of the roller mechanisms. If the lift chain suddenly become more difficult than usual to pull, stop immediately and inspect the mechanism located at the top of the window. Ensure it is free of any obstructions, including dislodged fascia, foreign objects, or fabric that has telescoped across the width of the shade. Maintenance Shading components are made to withstand a lifetime of use with proper care and use. A regular inspection and light maintenance schedule is recommended. Schedule inspections more frequently for heavily used shades. Fabtex, your shading professionals can recommend specific spare parts to support a maintenance routine. On larger and motorized shade, there may be heavy duty coupling and bearings that should be inspected and lightly lubed from time to time. Take care when using any lubricants to use very small amounts as the oils can quickly and permanently stain some of the lighter decorative fabrics. Cleaning The most effective cleaning is accomplished with a light vacuuming. Use a vacuum hose extension coupled to a soft bristle brush. Ensure the bristle brush is clean and the vacuum motor is on low. Gently brush the surface of the fabric with the brush to loosen and suck up any dust. Where a vacuum is not available, a regular feather dusting can perform the same cleaning. In heavily soiled areas, a damp microfiber towel can be used to remove excess debris. Harsh cleaning chemicals should never be used as they can damage the surface of the fabric, destroying the UV protectants. It is also recommended the header area containing the roll mechanism is vacuumed to remove and accumulated cobwebs and dust bunnies. In areas where air flow is present, the window pockets will over time accumulate a layer of dirt and debris that can negatively affect shade performance.
