DOOR TECHNOLOGY New approaches to escape door security

The principle of escape door security Dissolving a paradox Locked and yet open Escape doors must ensure that people can leave a building quickly and without auxiliary means in the event of an emergency. At the same time, these doors are expected to be lockable in order to provide efficient burglar protection, e.g., on the outside of a building. Panic locks are designed to fulfil exactly these requirements. Danger recognition The fact that such escape doors can be opened from inside at any time is criticised by building operators who demand that in 'normal' conditions these doors must not be passable. From the technical point of view, however, the distinction between a 'normal' and an 'emergency' case is not feasible. The psychological trick For this reason, a psychological barrier is used to prevent the door from being frequented as everyday passageway: In addition to the panic lock, the door is kept closed by an electrical locking element. In this way misuse is prevented as far as possible. In an emergency case, the door can be released at any time by means of an emergency button installed next to it. Automatic opening and closing The minimum configuration of an escape door system comprises an emergency pushbutton, a control unit and a lock. In Germany, the use of this type of system is subject to approval according to 'EltVTR' (German directive for electrical locking systems on escape route doors issued by the German institute of building engineering DIBt). 2

FTNT escape door control system innovative signalling concept with clear straightforward symbols The electrically lockable touch bar (EVT) in conjunction with the FTNT escape door control system Approach area monitoring costeffective, easily retrofittable escape door monitoring system The HM-F FT escape route sliding door reconciles conflicts between regulatory standards In order to ensure safe and secure escape routes, the GU group product range offers you the possibility to compose innovative system solutions with a perfect interplay of functions. All products are easy to install and commission from panic locks (mechanical, mechatronic, motor-driven or radio controlled) through to escape door terminals with electrical locking systems and escape sliding door assemblies. System versions, escape door security Escape door package 1 The electrically locking touch bar (EVT) In conjunction with the FTNT escape door control system As the industry leader in escape door locks, BKS combines panic hardware and escape door locking technology in one system. The integration of escape door locking in accordance with EltVTR into an electrically locking touch bar (EVT) with LED status display for 1 and 2-leaf escape doors reduces the system components on an escape door. The integrated LED display clearly signals the statuses 'locked' or 'unlocked'. When locked, the door is always secured by the locking points of the panic lock. Functional impairments and/or damage of the door from attempts to gain unauthorised access are thus prevented by the EVT. Escape door control system: Example FTNT10 Advantages: Integration of an escape door locking unit complying with EltVTR into a touch bar on single or double-leaf escape doors in accordance with EN 1125. The integrated LED display in the electrically locked touch bar (EVT) clearly signals the status "locked" or "unlocked". In a locked state, the door is always secured by the locking points of the locking system Functional impairments and/or damage of the door from attempts to gain unauthorised access are prevented by the EVT Reduced number of system components on an escape door Approved to EN 1125 for use and combination with all panic locks of the GU group In the panic door package, the EVT touch bar is combined with the FTNT escape door control unit and can be optionally networked via the BKS-NET door bus interface Status: unlocking Signalling: vertical green arrow Status: alarm Signalling: flashing yellow LEDs at the top, right and left light up Status: locking Signalling: red cross 4

System versions, escape door security Escape door package 2 Electrically locking panic lock (EVP) In conjunction with the FTNT escape door control system The combination of panic lock and electrically controlled escape door lock provides a compact solution saving a lot of planning and production time to architects and door fabricators. The technical combination of these two points, which is unique in the market, unites various benefits in one system. With cables installed in the door frame only, millings other than those for the lock are no longer required! The locking point of the electric lock is ideally positioned in the panic lock case. Thanks to the automatic latchbolt, secure door locking is ensured even in the event of a power failure! Manual door locking is not necessary. Upon electrical release of the escape door lock, exit is possible by operating the lever handle or the push bar. The DIN lock case dimensions allow the fabricator to process all door leaves in the same way, regardless of whether an electrically controlled locking point is required or not.thus, even retrofitting is possible without additional work on the door. Advantages: Integration of an escape door locking system in accordance with EltVTR, in interaction with an electronically locking panic lock (EVP) on 1-leaf emergency doors in accordance with EN 179 and panic doors in accordance with EN 1125 The EVP panic lock is also ideal for retrofitting and when upgrading existing buildings due to the DIN lock case dimensions The automatic latchbolt guarantees a securely locked door even in the event of a power failure. No need to manually lock the door. The locking point is located at the optimum position in the "middle" of the door Additional millings in the door leaf or frame are no longer required Reduced number of system components on an escape door In the escape door package, the EVP panic lock is combined with the FTNT escape door control system and optionally networked via the BKS-NET door bus interface 6

System versions, escape door security Networked systems BKS-NET system management You want to control and monitor many doors from a central place? Then the BKS-NET tablet or BKS-NET system software offer you everything you need. In reception areas, security centres, or nurses' rooms, these products give you the complete overview of a large number of data. BKS-NET interconnects the GU Group's electro-mechanical systems by means of modern bus communi-cation, thus ensuring the automatic interplay of functions. Its modern system structure comprises centralised system configuration as well as centralised system monitoring. The main focus is always put on the door as a functional entity. All compatible products are marked with the BKS-NET logo label. Advantages: Easy planning Little wiring effort Fast commissioning Automatic configuration Centralised control and visualisation Local and central configuration of system components 8

Escape door monitoring Approach area monitoring system Alarm issued before unauthorised opening of a door Approach area monitoring system The compact BÜ10 monitoring unit is installed above the door to control a variably determinable area. When a person approaches the door, a visual and an audible signal are released which amplify as the person advances. In this way, the unauthorised use of the door is effectively prevented. In the event of an emergency, the door is always freely accessible. Technical data: Housing dimensions: 280 x 140 x 60 mm (WxHxD) Operating voltage: 100 240 V (50/60 Hz) AC or 12 24 V DC Current consumption: 290 ma Alarm signalling device: visual/audible (up to 95 db) Interface: BKS-NET door bus Inactive state Prealarm 1: Visual/audible alarm Features and benefits provided by the approach area monitoring system: Protection of doors against unauthorised opening the system can be retrofitted without any structural changes on the door, e.g. a fire protection door Escape doors are efficiently protected against unauthorised passage or misuse Safe escape route: in the event of an emergency, the escape door remains accessible Fast installation without structural changes to the door (irrespective of door material). Installation and commissioning in compliance with EltVTR do not require a proof of expertise Protection against misuse: visual and audible alarm before the door is opened Freely adjustable monitoring areas and alarm signals Authorised access via key switch Also retrofittable on fire protection doors Networkable via BKS-NET door bus Prealarm 2: Visual/audible alarm with additional light spot Door opening: Main alarm is transmitted to control centre (optional) Approach area monitoring system SET version BÜ10 set with illumination, stainless steel effect (including door contact, key switch and half cylinder) B 5580 1082 36

Escape-door alarm set Compact set for escape door monitoring FT-Alarm The FT-Alarm monitors a door and issues an acoustic and visual alarm as soon as the door is opened. In contrast to approach area monitoring - a warning is issued before the door is opened and used inappropriately. The installation is extremely easy to carry out as the FT-Alarm is suitable for battery operation. This means the FT-Alarm can also easily be retrofitted as it does not need to be wired up to an external power supply. The alarm function can be deactivated via the integrated locking cylinder for authorized use of the door - e.g. for goods delivery. An optional external key switch can also be connected. Door contact The FT-Alarm offers the following Straightforward assembly Retrofittable irrespective of door material Operation with battery or 12-24 VDC Visual and audible alarm Authorised access via integrated profile cylinder (WL = 27mm / 31mm) Different housing colours: green or white FT-Alarm FT-Alarm Version FT-Alarm door controller, green, complete set incl. profile half cylinder with 3 keys and door contact B 5450 0000 FT-Alarm door controller, white, complete set incl. profile half cylinder with 3 keys and door contact B 5450 0001 FT-Alarm door controller, green B 5450 0090 FT-Alarm door controller, white B 5450 0091 Compatible locking cylinder Version Profile half cylinder PZ88 (31 mm, incl. 3 keys) B 8900 0101 37

Escape route sliding door HM-F FT escape route sliding door Guideline conflict resolved Escape route sliding doors tested to AutSchR Stainless steel floor channel Locking of automatic sliding doors in rescue routes Automatic sliding doors in rescue routes are regulated building products and described in the list of building rules A, part 1 with the AutSchR (DIBt guideline on automatic sliding doors in rescue routes) as well as in DIN 18650. Escape route sliding doors without a swivelling fitting (break out) open automatically when a person approaches. This also occurs in the event of a power failure or if a fault occurs in the drive system, as the drives are implemented redundantly. It is an important requirement for the door to open automatically when a person is approaching. The door must be open before the escaping persons reach the door leaf in order to prevent a compression load on the door leaf in the escape direction. These axial forces would prevent the sliding door from opening. In the "OFF/NIGHT" operating mode, door locking and deactivation of the radar motion detector is only permitted if these doors are no longer required as escape and/or escape route doors, or if there are no persons in the building at night. However, what needs to be considered if escape routes in projects such as: hospitals residential homes for the elderly and disabled hotels and airports are to be locked at specific times, although people are still in the building? In this case the EltVTR (German directive on electric locking systems for doors along rescue routes) must also be observed (DIBt list of building rules A, part 1). Until now, a type-tested sliding door suited for such situations has not been available. The only option available to the owner/operator was to submit an application to the building supervision authority in individual cases. In light of the fact that the automatic sliding door no longer opens when a load is applied, it is questionable as to whether consent would be given by the building authority. The German trade association for door automation has already addressed this "inconsistency" with its Guideline No. 1 in 2002 (see www.fta-online.de). 38

Hinged sliding panel (Break-Out) Escape door control system tested to EltVTR Conflicts between regulatory standards resolved: escape route sliding doors can now be locked at any time. With the type-tested HM-F FT escape route sliding door it is possible to "break out" the locked sliding panel outwards (escape direction) when actuating the FTNT10 escape door control system. This resolves a conflict between regulatory standards. The typetested escape route sliding door to AutSchR and EltVTR guarantees a safe escape route when in the operation mode OFF / NIGHT, also when locked. The type-tested HM-F FT escape route sliding door system provides planning reliability in combination with the FTNT10 escape door control system. A swing-door fitting integrated into the sliding panel allows the panel to be pushed open in escape direction when the sliding door is closed. During everyday operation, this is prevented by a tested electric escape door strike. In this instance, as is the case with the other redundant escape route sliding doors, the function is guaranteed. In the event of an emergency, the electric escape door strike can be released by pressing the illuminated emergency pushbutton. The door leaf can be swung open by pushing it gently outwards. This way of opening is also ensured by applying a load to the door leaf in the escape direction. No individual approval by building authority required. 39
