Owner's Manual Open Sesame Door Systems, Inc. Manufacturer of Disability Access products 1.800.673.6911

Thank you for your purchase of the Open Sesame door operating system. This product is designed to be durable and provide years of trouble-free service. To ensure the Open Sesame Door System lives up to all expectations, it is important to read and comply with this instruction manual. Please store this manual near the door operator for easy access, as it is an important resource for operation and future maintenance. If there are further questions about the operation or maintenance of the door operator, please contact your local dealer or installer. You can find their information on the back cover of this manual. You can visit our website at www.opensesamedoor.com or contact us at (800) 673-6911. Our business hours are 9am - 5pm pacific time. The Open Sesame Door System must be plugged in to a wall outlet at all times when the power switch is in the on position to ensure the battery stays fully charged. Page 1

Adjustments Your Open Sesame door operator has four adjustments that you may want to change at some time during or after installation. The location of these is shown on the diagram on the inside cover of the operator. These adjustments can only be accessed with the operator cover removed. Two cover screws need to be loosened but not removed. Open door to access top screw, loosen screws and slide cover forward to remove. Close delay adjustment (yellow knob). Turn clockwise to allow more time for people to go through the door before automatically closing. Opening angle adjustment (blue knob). Turn clockwise for wider door opening. Obstruction Sensitivity adjustment (white knob). Turn clockwise for heavier door or sticky door sweep. Auto-close jumper Yellow knob White knob 90 Day 5 year Limited Warranty Blue knob Page 2

Auto-close (for Model 133 only) is an optional feature used for elevator doors, public bathroom doors and doors off public hallways. When the auto-close adjustment feature is selected and the door is manually opened and left open, the door will automatically close after a delay. This feature disables the park-open feature. To activate the auto - close function, locate small or black shorting block on the right side of the circuit board (displayed on the diagram on inside cover of operator). To select auto-close, pull up jumper and put back in the on position, over the two center pins. Door Operator Battery The battery is a 12V lead acid gel cell with 1.2 amp-hr capacity. The physical dimensions are approximately 2 high, by 2 wide by 4 long. The brand is MK, part number ES1.2-12. An equivalent can be substituted. The battery is always used for normal operation but the transformer should remained plugged into the wall outlet. Open Sesame door operating systems provide a great sense of security: in the event of a power outage, our openers still operate at full power use of your door for several hours, allowing remote access. Page 3

Door Operator Battery Maintenance and Troubleshooting The battery in the door operator should last approximately 3-5 years. To test the function of the operator without using the remote, manually press the black button on the top surface of the operator. If the unit does not respond the door operator battery may be completely discharged and may need recharging or replacement. Reasons For Battery Failure If the battery is not working it could be an old battery or has been discharged. A discharged battery is not being charged because the wall transformer and operator has become disconnected or damaged. If the battery is discharged, turn operator switch OFF. Make sure that the power transformer is still plugged into the wall outlet and that the green light on it is lit and let the operator charge for a minimum of 1 hour. When this battery becomes low, the operator may display one or all of the following symptoms: a. The door may not open to its normal width. b. The door may move slower upon opening/closing c. Electric strike will not release door latch It could be that the fuse is blown. fuse is located in tubular fuse holder connected to orange battery wire. Page 4

Testing the Battery: 1. Make sure the operator is switched OFF 2. Remove cover from the operator. 3. Unplug one of the terminals connected to the battery. 4. With your meter place the positive lead on the red terminal and the negative lead on the black terminal 5. The battery should read anywhere from 13-14 volts DC. New batteries for the door operator may be obtained by contacting your local dealer/installer, or your local Batteries Plus or Interstate Battery store, or Open Sesame. Replacing the operator battery: Caution: Turn the operator switch off and disconnect the phone cord before changing the battery. The wires to the battery should be tightly connected with special care as is indicated by the color coding: Orange wire to positive red terminal and black wire to negative black terminal on battery. Reversing these wires will result in a puff of smoke and permanent damage to the battery charging circuit. Once you replace the battery, date it for your reference so you know the date of when it was last replaced. NOTE: IN THE EVENT OF A NOISY CLUTCH (POSSIBLY MAKING A SQUEALING SOUND), DO NOT SPRAY LUBRICANT ON IT OR OIL IT OR ANY OTHER PARTS IN ANY WAY. Page 5

About Your Remote Control Open Sesame remote controls are radio-frequency transmitters similar to controls used for automatic garage doors. They will transmit through walls and have a range of up to 100 ft. Your remote control contains batteries that will require replacement about once a year. As the batteries become weak, the range will slowly decrease and the door may not respond every time. The batteries are common and can be found at most drug stores. Depending on the model, the type is 2016 (3 volt, 2 req'd), or 23A (12 volt). Your remote control is unique remote controls will not operate your door unless they are specifically programmed to work with the unit. Most people like to mount their Open Sesame remote control on the joystick housing or on a side panel of their wheelchair. Page 6

How to Program the Remote Locate the RED program or training button on top of the unit on the upper right surface. Push this button momentarily, then push the button on the hand remote control or other activation device for a second. For keypads enter 1234 (the default factory code), for touchpads place hand in front. The door operator should respond to open or shut the door. If you have lost your remote and are concerned about others using it to gain access to your residence, you can de-program all remote units. To de-program all remotes push the RED push button on top of the door operator 5 times within 3 seconds. Replacing Remote Controls If your remote control has been lost or damaged, you will need to acquire a new remote and program your Open Sesame operator to respond to it. For your security the Open Sesame operator will only respond to the remote control it has been programmed to. Page 8

Using Your Remote Control Your Open Sesame door operator is simple to use. With one push of the button* the door will open, delay and then close. The delay time may be adjusted from the standard 15 seconds setting to the desired setting (5-50 sec) by internal adjustment (see adjustments section, page 2). If you would like to leave the door open or delay the closing, simply push the same button a second time. The door will stop in place indefinitely. If the door has been left open by operation of the remote control or by manual operation, re-push the remote button and the door will close. *(or other means to activate such as voice control or through a ECU wheelchair control system) If you want to leave the door partially open for a short duration (for pet access or for ventilation), push the remote once to activate the operator, push the remote a second time, let your cat or dog pass through, and then push the button to close the door. Page 9

To Change Code for Keyless Entry Pad You may have chosen to purchase the security entry system, also known as the keyless entry pad. If not, it is always available for purchase after your original installation. The keyless entry pad is primarily used to allow home healthcare personnel access to a residence without giving out keys. The combination code can also be given to trusted friends, caretakers or emergency personnel. 1) Enter # # XXXX on keypad (XXXX is the old code) 2) Enter desired 4-digit code 3) Enter 1# # 4) Wait a few seconds 5) Enter **. You can now use the new code. NOTE: To reset code factory setting of 1234, do the following: 1. Disconnect battery 2. While holding down any button, reconnect the battery. 3. Continue holding button for 5 seconds. Page 10

Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who can install it? A: The Open Sesame Door System can be installed by a general contractor, a locksmith, a security access company, a disabled access specialist, a mechanically inclined individual, a handyman, and of course a participating dealer of Open Sesame products. Q: Do I need a contractor to do the wiring? A: No. The Open Sesame is a low voltage device. A 24v transformer plugs into the wall to keep the internal battery charged. It can be installed easily and safely by anyone with handyman skills. Q: How long does it take to install a system? A: Approximately 3 hours Q: Do I need a new door? A: Usually no. Open Sesame will work with most doors. The important point is that the door must be neutral in it's movement - aligned and hung properly, and not warped. In addition, there must be no rubbing or binding of the door in the frame when closing. Q: What do I have to do if I have a storm or security door? A:The unit can be used on a storm or security door. Contact us to talk about your specific application. Q: Do I need a new lockset? A: No, you can use your existing lockset and keys. But we recommend that you have the type of lockset with an inside handle that can be turned while the door is locked. This will prevent the door from accidentally being left unlocked when someone manually opens the door to leave. Also, it is better to have a door latch with half-round security pin. Q: How do keys work? A: With the Open Sesame Door Operator the door latch is Page 11

released and power-opened at your command through the remote control. The existing keys will still unlock the door. Q: Will the strike plate compromise the security of my door and lock? A: The electric strike supplied is a high quality, commercial grade strike. It is very safe and secure, and is rated at 2400 pounds static strength. Q: Do I need an electrical outlet close to the door? A: We include 30 feet of cable with the system, which should be long enough to reach your nearest outlet. Q: How do I use it? A: The Open Sesame Door Operator unlatches, opens and closes a door with the touch of a button. It operates with a chair mounted transmitter or other environmental controls. Our door operator both opens and closes a door under power, giving you full control. Q: How long does the door stay open after opening to allow me to pass through? A: The delay time after opening is user adjustable from 5-50 seconds. Q: Does the Open Sesame Door Opening System close the door for me? A:YES! The operator closes the door under power. Q: Will the system release a locked door? A:Yes, the electric strike plate releases the door latch, allowing you to automatically open the door while it is locked. This door latch release mechanism is commonly used in apartment buildings where an intercom system Is present. Q: Can I leave the door open? A: Yes. The door operator opens and closes a door under power. It does not use a spring mechanism to close the door as do most other systems. The door closes, under power at your command. This allows the door to be left open or even ajar indefinitely if Page 12

desired. After activating the door operator by pushing the remote control button once, simply push the button again to stop the door at the desired angle. It will stay there (although it is free to move) until the button is pushed a third time, which closes the door. Q: What happens if the door closes while someone is in the way? A: When the door experiences an obstruction while opening or closing, it will pause for several seconds (the same time period as the door hold open time), then try again to close. It will repeat this action until the obstruction is removed. Q: Will people that do not have a remote control be able to operate the door? A: Yes, the door operates normally when manually used. Q: How do other household members and guests open/close the door? A: Open Sesame Door Operator will not interfere with the manual operation of the door and allows existing keys to unlatch the door and the door to swing freely under manual power. Q: Is it difficult to operate a remote control? A: Provided with the Open Sesame Door System is a small match box sized device with a special pressure pad on the face that is extremely easy to activate. You can use fingers, palms, the side of a hand, arm, or even chin to sponsor the opening of the door. Q: Does the remote control work in all areas of the home? A: For the most part yes, inside and outside. Our remote control is similar to controls used for automatic garage doors. They will transmit through walls and may have a range of up to 100 ft. Q: What is the range of the remote controls? A: The remote controls are manufactured by a big name company that manufactures garage door openers - Transmitter Solutions. The range can be over 100'. Page 13

Q: If I give my attendant a combination to open my door (referring to use of the 4-digit code keyless entry pad), is it a big job to change the combination? A: No,changing the code is easy and takes just seconds. Q: Can the Open Sesame door operator be connected to a smartphone app? A: Yes, Open Sesame does not currently have an app but there are some smartphone apps that are compatible with our operator. Give us a call for more information about this kind of application. Q: I understand the Open Sesame systems use batteries. Do they need to be changed frequently? A: The door operator contains a 12V, 1.2 amp-hour battery. This is what actually runs the system. It is similar to those used in some alarm systems. It should last about 3-5 years. Batteries for transmitters can be found at your local drug store and should be replaced approximately once a year. Q: Will I be stuck in or out if the power goes out? A: No, The Open Sesame door operator has an internal 12 volt battery, that will operate the unit for a day under loss of power, allowing you to get in and out when you need it most. The battery is kept constantly charged while the power is on. Q: Can I take it with me if I move? A: Because of the versatility of the Open Sesame Door System you can take the unit with you if you relocate, and only minor adaptations may be necessary. Q: Who do I contact about using my warranty? A: If your operator is still under warranty, Open sesame will replace/exchange the parts that are needed at no cost. If you had a dealer/contractor do the installation, we recommend you speak to them as well before contacting Open Sesame because each dealer/contractor has different warranties. Page 14
