Safety Information Alert Signals Warning Warnings alert you to a possibility of personal injury. Caution Cautions alert you to a possibility of damage to the equipment. Note Notes alert you to pertinent facts and conditions. Hot Surface Hot surfaces alert you to a possibility of personal injury if you come in contact with a surface during use or for a period of time after use. Your Thermolyne Type S25500 Maxi Stirrer magnetic stirrer has been designed with function, reliability, and safety in mind. It is your responsibility to install it in conformance with local electrical codes. For safe operation, please pay attention to the alert signals throughout the manual. Warnings To avoid electrical shock, always: 1. Use a properly grounded electrical outlet of correct voltage and current handling capacity. 2. Disconnect from the power supply prior to maintenance and servicing. To avoid personal injury: 1. Do not use in the presence of flammable or combustible materials; fire or explosion may result. This device contains components which may ignite such materials. 2. Refer servicing to qualified personnel. 3

Introduction The Type S25500 Maxi Stirrer is designed to provide maximum torque for stirring viscous solutions and up to 35 gallons of aqueous solution within a speed range of 60 to 1050 rpm. The powerful 7.5 drive magnet can accommodate from 3 to 6 stir bars. Electrical Ratings S25535 120 Volt 1.4 Amps 160 Watts 50/60 Hz S25530 240 Volt.7 Amps 160 Watts 50/60 Hz S25530-26 220-240 Volt.7 Amps 160 Watts 50/60 Hz Unpacking Carefully unpack the unit. Be sure the bench or work area where the stirrer is placed will be able to support the weight of the stirrer plus the weight of the vessel and its contents. For example, the weight of the stirrer is 40 Ibs., the weight of a 30-gallon container may be about 15 Ibs., and 30 gallons of aqueous solution will weigh 250 Ibs. The total weight would therefore be greater than 300 Ibs. Alternatively, of course, the stirrer may be placed on the floor where it is more convenient in using the larger sizes of vessels. 4

Operation Note Unlike smaller magnetic stirrers, the motor of a large magnetic stirrer can be overloaded. This will cause the 1-1/2 ampere SLO BLO fuse to blow or the motor to overheat. Any stir-bar up to 6-1/4 long and 1-1/16 in diameter may safely be used with the Maxi Stirrer without danger of overloading the motor. Warning Disconnect from power supply before servicing. Refer servicing to qualified personnel. Place the vessel with its contents atop the stirrer. Any stirbar from 2 to 6 long may be used. To stir larger volumes or viscous solutions at higher speeds, it may be necessary to gradually increase the stirring speed control. Maximum stirring speeds attainable will be determined by the length and diameter of the stir-bar, the material of the vessel, the bottom configuration of the vessel (a slight crown in the center is desirable) and, of course, the volume and viscosity of the solution. The extremely strong pull of the stirring magnet on the stir-bar can cause friction between the stir bar and vessel bottom resulting in reduced stirring speed. The configuration and vessel material can drastically vary the amount of friction and corresponding speed reduction. The speed control rheostat is a combination ON OFF switch and setting selector. The fully counterclockwise position is OFF, fully clockwise is maximum speed. To select a speed, turn the speed control knob clockwise until the desired mixing action is achieved. A separate ON OFF rocker switch is provided in the event a desired setting is to be reused. The rheostat may be left at the setting and the stirrer turned off and on by means of the rocker switch. Repeated burn-out of the 1-1/2 ampere SLO BLO fuse is a good indication that the motor is being overloaded. DO NOT REPLACE WITH A LARGER AMPERAGE FUSE. Doing so can result in the motor burning out. If fuses blow consistently when the proper size stir-bars are used, it may indicate that the motor needs re-oiling. 5

Maintenance and Servicing Warning Disconnect from power supply before servicing. Under light to normal use, the motor will need to be reoiled only once every three years. With heavier use, oil every year or two. Remove dial plate front panel and add SAE 10 oil to the top and bottom bearings (see diagram). Refer servicing to qualified personnel. 6
