Challenges: Smart grids trends and challenges 5 Integration of distributed generation, often RES Self supporting communities Combining energy-infra and ICT Cyber security threat Privacy aspects Resistance grid operators Long sales cycles Coupling Supply & Demand Many (new) stakeholders, with different interests, and innovative business models Local energy management Including a lot of (Dutch) SMEs
From innovation platform to topsectors 6 Opportunities and chances Focus Economization Strengthen position in the top 5 of global knowledge economies by 2020 (GCI/WEF) Increase Dutch R&D efforts to 2.5% of GDP by 2020 Establish Top consortia for Knowledge & Innovation (TKIs) in 2011. At least 40% of consortia financed by private sector
From top sector policy to smart grid innovation 7 Top sector policy of the Dutch government Concentration of RD&D funding in nine top sectors, Energy being one of these nine, and Smart Grids being one of the seven themes within this top sector Innovation Program Smart Grids has been formulated 28 projects have been awarded: 17 in 2012, and 11 in 2013 Total budget about 35 million with ca. 56% share from companies Innovation Program 2014 published in June, 2014 Several cross-tki initiatives, e.g. Smart Energy Cities, and System Integration Create eco system at both local and international level
Agenda of TKI organizing SG community 8 Being an innovation platform for SG throughout the innovation chain, i.e. from RD&D up to market application and implementation. Actively stimulate cooperation between companies, academia and governments (match making), and create critical mass in selected topics. Create eco system at both local and international level. Special attention to Human Capital Agenda
Collaboration in eco system, national and international 9 Cross-sectors, e.g. utilities, technology providers, service providers, etc. Between SMEs, large industries, and universities European innovation programs, e.g. ERA-NET+ Cross-countries, e.g. trade missions in Germany, Smart Grid Flanders, and US, and member of GSGF

Goal of green deal Smart energy cities 15 Participants aim to realise low carbon smart energy solutions in districts with 100,000 residential and commercial buildings in 5 cities Companies should be attracted by this large number, resulting in additional investments in innovative technologies and services that can be implemented within the period 2014-2019 The approach is customer / energy consumer oriented Innovations need to be developed from a system integration perspective, i.e. all components should function as part of a system

Storage integrated Multi-agent controlled Smart Grid (PV SiMS, TKISG01009) 18 Development of both technology and business models that enables energy storage and energy micro-trading to economically optimise investments in small-scale renewables, to be tested and upgraded in a pilot project The result should proof the value of a different electricity supply structure and the adaptation of the relationship between the consumer himself generating power (prosumer), the electricity supplier and the grid operator Partners: Mastervolt International, Alliander, Eindhoven University of Technology, Amsterdam Smart City, Green Spread InEnergy
Developing a sustainable quick charger powered by the sun (Power by the sun, TESG113014 ) 19 Aim of the project is to install fast chargers for EV alongside the Dutch highways to enable EV charging within 30 minutes fuelled with PV solar. Smart grid concepts are used by linking series of batteries to the local grid resulting in peak load reduction and optimal use of solar energy combined with a modern way of transportation. Partners: Mister Green, Alfen, Delft University of Technology
Smart Grid Meppel (MeppelEnergie, TKISG01005) 20 Construction of new housing developments pose a challenge for local authorities. How can they offer future residents optimal home comfort and at the same time have as low as possible impact on the environment? In the city of Meppel parties are working together on providing a new housing development involving 3,400 houses, starting with 444 with efficient hybrid heating based on biogas supplied via a heat network and applying heat pumps. Residual heat from purified sewage water is used to maintain the heat balance in the ground. Partners: MeppelEnergie, RENDO Duurzaam, Municipality of Meppel, inrg, Delft University of Technology, and University of Twente
Cellular Smart Grid Platform (CSGriP, TKISG02008) 21 The Cellular Smart Grids Platform (CSGriP) project develops a grid concept for a more effective utilisation of the distribution network. Sub-networks will be operating self-supporting and will take corrective actions automatically. This will even function with a lot of distributed generation in small-scale energy storage and smart grid technologies are applied. The sub-networks will be connected with each other via a backbone being a medium voltage grid to enable energy exchange temporarily. This innovative concept builds an intrinsically stable grid unit and maintains it without the need for a far-reaching and complex ICT infrastructure. Partners: Alfen, Alliander, Avans Hogeschool, Bredenoord Aggregaten, DNV GL, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, Pfixx Solar, TU Delft, Wind Energy Solutions (WES)
