About this document For all available product documentation www.festo.com/pk The rack and pinion axis EHMH is designated as a product in these operating instructions, as well. Read the operating instructions carefully before starting all work on the product. 2 Safety 2.1 Safety instructions Observe product labelling. Before working on the product, switch off the power supply and secure it against being switched on again. Store the product in a cool, dry, UV-protected and corrosion-protected environment. Ensure that storage times are kept to a minimum. Protect the product during operation from damaging influences. Damaging influences include grinding dust, glowing chips or sparks. Use the product only within the defined values Take into consideration the legal regulations for the respective destination 2.2 Intended use The rack and pinion axis EHMH is properly used for lifting and lowering permissible payloads in a vertical direction. The Z-axis is intended as a Rack and Pinion axis for use as a single axis and/or in the handling and multi-axis modular system of FESTO AG & Co KG. Note Damage to the product. 5 Product overview 5.1 Function This product is an electromechanical linear axis in cantilever arm slide operation. The vertically aligned rack and pinion axis is driven by a pinion installed directly behind the gear unit. The stroke is performed through the rolling of the pinion on a rack, which is permanently connected to the axis. Thepayload is defined and limited for this interface Chapter 8.2. 5.2 Configuration 1 Energy chain 2 Clamping unit 3 Wiper package on guide carriage 4 Drill holes 13 mm for load suspension (see opposite) 5 End-position buffer 6 Cover of drive pinion 7 Gear unit with motor flange 8 Pneumatic latching system 9 Receiving plate for payload aj Guide rail aa Base plate ab Switch lug for sensor rail system ac Carrier tube ad Measuring head of displacement encoder ae Central lubricant distributor and lubricating pinion set ae ad ac 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ab aa aj Fig. 1 Festo EHMH 2017-09 English 7

Transport Warning Crushing (death) due to falling components. Do not stand or work under the suspended system or other system parts. Note Damage to the product. Do not transport the rack and pinion axis with a forklift truck. Use both drill holes for load suspension devices4 and load them evenly and simultaneously. Use the lifting eye bolts or shackle for this purpose. After transport, remove all load suspension devices again. Do not stand on the load or load suspension device. Requirements for transport The connecting screws on the mounting plate are loosed on the complete rack and pinion axis. All of the parts adjacent to the rack and pinion axis are disassembled. All hose, pipe and cable connections are disconnected from the product and stored in a secure manner for transport. Performing transport Take product weight into account 15 Technical data. Attach suitable load suspension devices or lifting gear in such a manner that no sensitive machine parts are touched. Avoid vibrations and jolts during lifting and setting down. 8 Festo EHMH 2017-09 English

Storage Note Damage to the product. Store the rack and pinion axis in a horizontal position only. Make sure no other parts are stored on the rack and pinion axis. Leave the product in the original packaging during storage. The electrical components of the product must be stored in a clean, dry environment must not be stored outdoors Storage period and temperature 15 Technical data. Before and after storage: Check the corrosion protection of all unpainted surfaces (sliding surfaces, racks) and replace if necessary. Festo EHMH 2017-09 English 9

Mounting 8.1 Preparation Clean the contact surfaces, threaded holes and through-holes thoroughly. Select the motor and axial kit from the Festo catalogue: www.festo.com/catalogue. When mounting the motor: Follow the assembly instructions of the axial kit. Connect the motor cables after mounting the rack and pinion axis. Note The reference position is lost when the motor is dismounted (e.g., when turning the motor around). Start homing 9 Commissioning. Caution For a vertical mounting position: When de-energised, the rack and pinion axis can travel to the lower end position in an uncontrolled manner. Injury due to impacts or pinching. Bring moving parts of the product into a safe end position or secure them against falling. Place the product in such a way that the operating elements can be reached. Install product without tension or distortion. Fasten the product to a mounting surface with flatness of 0.05 % of the stoke length, but max. 0.5 mm. For additional information, contact your local Festo Service. Fig. 2 10 Festo EHMH 2017-09 English

Commissioning Caution Risk of injury due to unexpected movement of components. Protect the positioning range from unwanted intervention. Keep foreign objects out of the positioning range. Perform commissioning at low speed. In case of malfunctions during operation, switch off the system immediately. 9.1 Preparation Note Hazard due to the rack and pinion axis Train and qualify personnel. Integrate the rack and pinion axis into the overall safety concept of the system. 1. Remove all packaging remainders. 2. Remove the transport restraints (not required in case of the Pneumatic locking system, EPN option). 3. Install measurement and alarm indicators (safety components) before switching on the system and check these components for perfect function. If alarm indicators are activated, do not switch on the system. 4. Set options, such as sensors, limit switches, etc. 5. Lubricate the product after a longer storage time 11.2. 9.2 Procedure Action Purpose Note 1. Check travel Determining the approach direction of the motor 2. Homing run Comparison of real situation to the image of the control 3. Test run Checking the overall behaviour Due to incorrect wiring, the motor may rotate in the incorrect direction. Homing takes place: Against the reference switch Against an end stop Observe additional information Operatinginstructions of the motor. Check the following requirements: The rack and pinion axis moves through the intended positioning cycle completely. The rack and pinion axis stops as soon as alimit switch is reached. Tab. 4 After these measures, the rack and pinion axis is ready for operation. 16 Festo EHMH 2017-09 English

Operation Note Destruction of the product due to operational errors. Avoid integrated unit operation. Do not use the clamping unit to brake the axis. Note Axes of the same design may demonstrate different running noises depending on the respective component. The following factors may also influence this issue: Parameterisation Operating mode Type of mounting Installation situation (e.g., rigidity of the foundation, vibration behaviour, resonancefrequencies) Festo EHMH 2017-09 English 17
