LIONEL 71-9825-250 Rev. 2/97 3530 Generator Car
Welcome to the world of mobile power! In real life, the generator car was used to provide emergency power and light to fringe or disaster areas where a quick source of electric power was required. When you open the door of your Lionel 3530 generator car, the light goes on in the interior, illuminating a huge, diesel-electric generator. The generator hums with power and the cooling fan in the roof begins to turn. Connect your car to the power pole, which has a realistic transformer and an operating searchlight that can swivel on its own stand. This Lionel classic will give your train layout an added dimension in excitement and realism that you can see and hear! It s easy to operate. Simply follow these instructions. Your Lionel railroad will enjoy exciting generator car service in a matter of minutes. And have fun! Assembling your 3530 generator car The 3530 s light dispersion assembly is packed separately. To assemble the unit, first remove the end screw that holds the body shell to the frame. Now, gently push the shell backwards to release the frame from the slots on the body. Before lifting the body off the frame, note that two wires are attached from the frame to the inside of the shell. Gently lift off the shell and set it to the side of the frame, being careful not to disconnect the wires. Place the coil shield over the lamp until it rests on the car frame. Place the light cover onto the drive washer. Now, carefully remove the rubber band, which secures the metal activation switch, from around the generator. To reassemble the car, slide the slots on the shell over the tabs on the frame. Note: Take care that the two wires are completely inside the shell, and that they do not touch the light dispersion assembly. As you position the shell on the frame, be careful to push the metal activation switch in toward the generator, making sure it clears the tab on the door. Reinsert the front screw, and you re ready to roll! Light cover Coil shield Drive washer 2 Light dispersion assembly
Operating your 3530 generator car Operating your 3530 generator car Your generator car starts and stops its action when you open (or close) its side door. When the door is opened, the interior illuminates the huge dieselelectric generator. It begins to hum and a ventilating fan begins to turn. This action continues (whether the generator car is stationary or in motion) until the door is closed. Connect the power pole and the searchlight only when your generator car is stationary. The searchlight is switched on and off by opening and closing the car door. Note! Note! Before you run your generator car, you must first remove the interior rubber band from around the generator and install the light dispersion assembly and coil shield as shown on page 2. If your railroad is powered by constant voltage (18 volts), position your generator car on a siding with lower voltage (under 14 volts). The generator car operates best between 10-14 volts. Connecting the jack to the roof terminal Like its real life prototype, your 3530 generator car can be moved about from place to place or stationed semipermanently on a siding near the place where power is required. While the real generator car generated its own electricity, your Lionel 3530 picks up electric power from the track rails through a contact roller underneath one of its trucks. The current is carried from the generator car to the power pole and then to the searchlight through a connecting cable and jack. Insert the jack into the terminal on top of the car s roof as shown below. Connecting jack Roof terminal A brief interruption of power may occur when the jack is inserted into the terminal. 4
