EU Regulation for Premium Efficiency IE3 motors 2, 4, 6 poles efficienza Regulations (EC) 640/2009 and 04/2014 establish the conditions for the conversion to the new energy-efficient technology as requested by the EU MEPS Directive (European Minimum Energy Performance Standard). Standard IEC 60034-30 defines the energy efficiency classes for asynchronous motors. From January 1, 2015: energy efficiency class IE3 is mandatory for single speed three phase induction motors in the range 7.5 kw to 375 kw, 2, 4, 6 poles, rated voltage up to 1000 V, continuous duty operation S1 that are connected direct online. IE2 motors can still be placed on the market but they need to be used with a VSD (variable speed drive). Which kind of motors are covered by the Regulation? Three phase asynchronous motors 7.5 kw - 375 kw / 2, 4, 6 poles, continuous duty operation S1 Three phase asynchronous motors with auxiliary devices (shaft seal, speed sensors, etc...) 7.5 kw - 375 kw / 2, 4, 6 poles, continuous duty operation S1 Motors with rated power below 7.5 kw Motors specially designed for operation in discontinuous duty operation (e.g.: S3 < 80%) Motors fed by a variable speed drive VSD - Inverter * Motors with servo-ventilation Motors for gearmotors, pumps, fans, compressors, where the motor s efficiency can be tested independently from the machine Motors that are fully integrated into a machine where the motor s efficiency cannot be tested independently from the machine Motors completely immersed in a liquid during operation Potentially explosive atmospheres ATEX motors Brake motors Motors specially designed for operation at altitudes not exceeding 4000 m ASL Motors specially designed for operation where ambient temperature is less than 60 C Motors specially designed for operation where maximum working temperature is less than 400 C Motors specially designed for operation where ambient air temperature exceedes -30 C for any motor or exceedes 0 C for a motor with water cooling Motors specially designed for operation where the water coolant temperature at the inlet of a product in the range 0 C to 32 C Other motor types (e.g.: permanent magnet motors, double pole motors, motors used with a frequency converter, ecc ) Rev.04 pag. 1
Placing of IE2 motors in the European market: IE2 motors still be placed on the European market after January 1, 2015 as long as they have been placed for the first time in the European market before December 31, 2014. In that case the final user can use IE2 motors as usual. From January 1, 2015 IE2 motors can be placed in the European market only if they are fed by a variable speed drive (VSD). Information about the obligation to use a VSD must be displayed on the rating plate or on an additional sticker/plate on the motor and in the motor s technical documentation. The final user is responsible to fit the IE2 motors with a VSD. * Note: motors fed by VSD placed on the European market must be IE2 or IE3. Exports out of the European market: The following are T case of placing products on the market in the sense of Directive 2009/125/EC and its implementing Regulations: If the product is exported from a manufacturer in a Member State to a third country outside the European market. If the product of a manufacturer is transferred to an exporter (dealer or manufacturer of machines) which then exports it outside the European market independently or as an integrated component. Rating plate marking: The Regulation allows marking of nominal efficiency at only 100% rated load in the case of small motors due to the limited size of their rating plates. The customer is responsible for ordering and start up the motor suitable to the conditions provided by the European Regulation. From January 1, 2017: energy efficiency class IE3 is mandatory for single speed three phase induction motors in the range 0.75 kw to 375 kw, 2, 4, 6 poles, rated voltage up to 1000 V, continuous duty operation S1 that are connected direct online. IE2 motors can still be placed on the market but they need to be used with a VSD (variable speed drive). Rev.04 pag. 2
