ADVANCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE SPECIALIST TEST (L1) COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET This ooklet is intended only for referene when prepring for nd tking the ASE Advned Engine Performne Speilist Test. The omposite vehile type 3 powertrin ontrol system is sed on designs ommon to mny vehile mnufturers, ut is not identil to ny tul prodution vehile.

This pge is left lnk on purpose.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION This generi four yle, V6 engine hs four overhed hin-driven mshfts, 24 vlves, distriutorless ignition, nd mss irflow-type losed-loop sequentil multiport fuel injetion system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) reeives input from sensors, lultes ignition nd fuel requirements, nd ontrols engine tutors to provide the desired driveility, fuel eonomy, nd emissions ontrol. The ECM lso ontrols the vehile s hrging system. The powertrin ontrol system hs OBD II-omptile sensors nd dignosti pilities. The ECM reeives power from the ttery nd ignition swith nd provides regulted 5 volt supply for most of the engine sensors. The engine is equipped with single exhust system nd three-wy tlyti onverter, without ny seondry ir injetion. Engine ontrol fetures inlude vrile vlve timing, eletroni throttle tutor ontrol (TAC), dt ommunitions us, vehile nti-theft immoilizer system, nd onord refueling vpor reovery (ORVR) EVAP omponents. The ontrol system softwre nd OBD II dignosti proedures stored in the ECM n e updted using ftory supplied lirtion files nd PC-sed interfe softwre, long with reprogrmming devie or sn tool tht onnets the PC to the vehile s dt link onnetor (DLC). AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Four-speed utomti overdrive trnsxle, with shifting ontrolled y trnsmission ontrol module (TCM). The TCM ommunites with the ECM nd other modules through the dt us. The TCM provides its own regulted 5 volt supply, performs ll OBD II trnsxle dignosti routines, nd stores trnsxle dignosti troule odes (DTCs). The ontrol system softwre nd OBD II dignosti proedures stored in the TCM n e updted in the sme wy s the ECM. Filures tht result in pending or onfirmed DTC relted to ny of the following omponents will use the TCM to defult to fil-sfe mode: rnge swith, shift solenoids, turine shft speed sensor, nd the vehile speed sensor. The TCM will lso defult to fil-sfe mode if it is unle to ommunite with the ECM. When in fil-sfe mode, mximum line pressure will e ommnded, the trnsmission will defult to 2 nd ger, nd the torque onverter luth will e disled. FUEL SYSTEM Sequentil Multiport Fuel Injetion (SFI) Returnless Fuel Supply with eletri fuel pump mounted inside the fuel tnk Fuel pressure is regulted to onstnt 50 psi (345 kp) y mehnil regultor in the fuel tnk. Minimum eptle fuel pressure is 45 psi (310 kp). The fuel system should mintin minimum of 45 psi (310 kp) for two minutes fter the engine is turned off. IGNITION SYSTEM Distriutorless Ignition (EI) with six ignition oils (oil-on-plug) Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6 Cylinders 1, 3, nd 5 re on Bnk 1, Cylinders 2, 4, nd 6 re on Bnk 2 Ignition timing is not djustle Timing is determined y the ECM using the rnkshft position (CKP) sensor signl The ignition oil drivers re integrted into the ECM VARIABLE VALVE TIMING Intke mshft timing is ontinuously vrile using hydruli tutor tthed to the end of eh intke mshft. Engine oil flow to eh hydruli tutor is ontrolled y mshft position tutor ontrol solenoid. Exhust mshft timing is fixed. ASE COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET PAGE 1

A single timing hin drives oth exhust mshfts nd oth intke mshft hydruli tutors. While vlve overlp is vrile, vlve lift nd durtion re fixed. Cm timing is determined y the ECM using the rnkshft position (CKP) sensor nd mshft position sensor (CMP 1 nd CMP 2) signls. At idle, the intke mshfts re fully retrded nd vlve overlp is zero degrees. At higher speeds nd lods, the intke mshfts n e dvned up to 40 rnkshft degrees. Eh intke mshft hs seprte mshft position sensor, hydruli tutor, nd ontrol solenoid. If little or no oil pressure is reeived y hydruli tutor (typilly t engine strtup, t idle speed, or during fult ondition), it is designed to mehnilly defult to the fully retrded position (zero vlve overlp), nd is held in tht position y spring-loded loking pin. ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL The vehile does not hve mehnil throttle le, ruise ontrol throttle tutor, or n idle ir ontrol (IAC) vlve. Throttle opening t ll engine speeds nd lods is ontrolled diretly y throttle tutor ontrol (TAC) motor mounted on the throttle ody housing. Dul elertor pedl position (APP) sensors provide input from the vehile opertor, while the tul throttle ngle is determined using dul throttle position (TP) sensors. If one APP sensor or one TP sensor fils, the ECM will turn on the mlfuntion inditor lmp (MIL) nd limit the mximum throttle opening to 35%. If ny two (or more) of the four sensors fil, the ECM will turn on the MIL nd disle the eletroni throttle ontrol. In se of filure of the eletroni throttle ontrol system, the system will defult to limp-in opertion. In limp-in mode, the spring-loded throttle plte will return to defult position of 15% throttle opening, nd the TAC vlue on the sn tool will indite 15%. This defult position will provide fst idle speed of 1400 to 1500 rpm, with no lod nd ll essories off. Norml no-lod idle rnge is 850 to 900 rpm t 5% to 10% throttle opening. No idle relern proedure is required fter omponent replement or ded ttery. DATA COMMUNICATIONS BUS The seril dt us is high-speed, non-fult tolernt, two wire twisted pir ommunitions network. It llows peer-to-peer ommunitions etween vrious eletroni modules, inluding the engine ontrol module (ECM), trnsmission ontrol module (TCM), instrument luster (inluding the MIL), immoilizer ontrol module, nd sn tool onneted to the dt link onnetor (DLC). The Dt-High iruit swithes etween 2.5 (rest stte) nd 3.5 volts (tive stte), nd the Dt- Low iruit swithes etween 2.5 (rest stte) nd 1.5 volts (tive stte). The dt us hs two 120 ohm terminting resistors: one inside the instrument luster, nd nother one inside the ECM. Any of the following onditions will use the dt ommunitions us to fil nd result in the storge of network DTCs: either dt line shorted to power, to ground, or to the other dt line. The dt us will remin opertionl when one of the two modules ontining terminting resistor is not onneted to the network. The dt us will fil when oth terminting resistors re not onneted to the network. Dt ommunition filures do not prevent the ECM from providing ignition nd fuel ontrol. IMMOBILIZER ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM When the ignition swith is turned on, the immoilizer ontrol module sends hllenge signl through the ntenn round the ignition swith to the trnsponder hip in the ignition key. The trnsponder key responds with n enrypted key ode. The immoilizer ontrol module then deodes the key ode nd ompres it to the list of registered keys. When the engine is strted, the ECM sends request to the immoilizer ontrol module over the dt us to verify the key vlidity. If the key is vlid, the immoilizer ontrol module responds with PAGE 2 ASE COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET

vlid key messge to the ECM to ontinue norml engine opertion. If n ttempt is mde to strt the vehile with n invlid ignition key, the immoilizer ontrol module sends messge over the dt us to the instrument luster to flsh the nti-theft inditor lmp. If the ECM does not reeive vlid key messge from the immoilizer ontrol module within 2 seonds of engine strtup, the ECM will disle the fuel injetors to kill the engine. Cyling the key off nd rnking the engine gin will result in engine restrt nd stll. The immoilizer ontrol module nd ECM eh hve their own unique internl ID numers used to enrypt their messges, nd re progrmmed t the ftory to reognize eh other. If either module is repled, the sn tool must e used to progrm the replement module, using the VIN, the dte, nd ftory-ssigned PIN numer. Up to eight keys n e registered in the immoilizer ontrol module. Eh key hs its own unique internl key ode. If only one vlid key is ville, or if ll keys hve een lost, the sn tool n e used to delete lost keys nd register new keys. This proedure lso requires the VIN, the dte, nd ftory-ssigned PIN numer. Neither the ECM, TCM, nor the immoilizer ontrol module prevent opertion of the strter motor for nti-theft purposes. ON-BOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY (ORVR) EVAP SYSTEM The on-ord refueling vpor reovery EVAP system uses fuel tnk vpors to e direted to the EVAP hrol nister during refueling, so tht HC vpors do not espe into the tmosphere. The following omponents hve een dded to the trditionl EVAP system for ORVR pility: one inh I.D. fill pipe, one-wy hek vlve t the ottom of the fill pipe, fuel vpor ontrol vlve inside the fuel tnk, nd ½ inh I.D. vent hose from the vpor ontrol vlve to the nister. The fuel vpor ontrol vlve hs flot tht rises to sel the vent hose when the fuel tnk is full. It lso prevents liquid fuel from rehing the nister nd loks fuel from leking in the event of vehile roll-over. SENSORS MASS AIRFLOW (MAF) SENSOR Senses irflow into the intke mnifold. When the duty yle is greter thn 50%, the oil flow from the solenoid uses the tutor to dvne the mshft position. When the duty yle is less thn 50%, the oil flow from the solenoid uses the tutor to retrd the mshft position. When the ECM determines tht the desired mshft position hs een hieved, the duty yle is ommnded to 50% to hold the tutor so tht the djusted mshft position is mintined. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 12 ± 2 ohms. EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) VALVE A duty yle ontrolled solenoid tht, when energized, lifts the spring-loded EGR vlve pintle to open the vlve. A vlue of 0% indites n ECM ommnd to fully lose the EGR vlve, nd vlue of 100% indites n ECM ommnd to fully open the EGR vlve. The solenoid is enled when the engine oolnt temperture rehes 150 F (66 C) nd the throttle is not losed or wide open. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 12 ± 2 ohms. FUEL INJECTORS Eletro-mehnil devies used to deliver fuel to the intke mnifold t eh ylinder. Eh injetor is individully energized one per mshft revolution, in time with its ylinder s intke stroke. The injetor winding resistne spe is 12 ± 2 ohms. IGNITION COILS These six oils, mounted ove the sprk plugs, generte high voltge to rete sprk t eh ylinder individully. Timing nd dwell re ontrolled y the ECM. The oil primry resistne spe is 1 ±.5 ohms. The oil seondry resistne spe is 10K ± 2K ohms. GENERATOR FIELD The ECM supplies this vrile-duty yle signl to ground the field winding of the genertor (lterntor), without the use of seprte voltge regultor. Inresing the duty yle results in higher field urrent nd greter genertor (lterntor) output. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID A duty yle ontrolled solenoid tht regultes the flow of vpors stored in the nister to the intke mnifold. The solenoid is enled when the engine oolnt temperture rehes 150 F (66 C). A duty yle of 0% loks vpor flow, nd duty yle of 100% llows mximum vpor flow. The duty yle is determined y the ECM, sed on engine speed nd lod. The solenoid is lso used for OBD II testing of the evportive emission (EVAP) system. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 48 ± 6 ohms. There is lso servie port with shrder vlve nd p instlled on the hose etween the purge solenoid nd the nister. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) CANISTER VENT SOLENOID When energized, the fresh ir supply hose to the nister is loked. The solenoid is only energized for OBD II testing of the evportive emission (EVAP) system. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 48 ± 6 ohms. TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) SOLENOID VALVE A duty yle ontrolled solenoid vlve tht pplies the torque onverter luth y redireting hydruli pressure in the trnsxle. With duty yle of 0%, the TCC is relesed. When torque onverter luth pplition is desired, the pulse width is inresed until the luth is fully pplied. The solenoid will then mintin 100% duty yle until luth disenggement is ommnded. Then the pulse width is deresed k to 0%. If the rke pedl position swith loses, the duty yle is ut to 0% immeditely. The solenoid is enled when the engine oolnt temperture rehes 150 F (66 C), the rke swith is open, the trnsmission is in 3rd or 4th ger, nd the vehile is t ruise (stedy throttle) ove 40 mph. In ddition, whenever the trnsmission fluid temperture is 248 F (120 C) or more, the TCM will ommnd TCC lokup. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 12 ± 2 ohms. TRANSMISSION PRESSURE CONTROL (PC) SOLENOID This duty yle ontrolled solenoid ontrols fluid in the trnsmission vlve ody tht is routed to the pressure regultor vlve. By vrying the duty yle of the solenoid, the TCM n vry the line pressure of the trnsmission to ontrol shift feel nd slippge. When the duty yle is minimum (10%), the line pressure will e mximized. When the duty yle is mximum (90%), the line pressure will e minimized. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 6 ± 1 ohms. PAGE 8 ASE COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET

TRANSMISSION SHIFT SOLENOIDS (SS 1 AND SS 2) These solenoids ontrol fluid in the trnsmission vlve ody tht is routed to the 1-2, 2-3, nd 3-4 shift vlves. By energizing or de-energizing the solenoids, the TCM n enle ger hnge. The solenoid winding resistne spe is 24 ± 4 ohms. Ger SS 1 SS 2 P, N, R, or 1 On Off 2 Off Off 3 Off On 4 (OD) On On SFI SYSTEM OPERATION AND COMPONENT FUNCTIONS STARTING MODE When the ignition swith is turned on, the ECM energizes the fuel pump rely for 2 seonds, llowing the fuel pump to uild up pressure in the fuel system. Unless the engine is rnked within this two-seond period, the fuel pump rely is de-energized to turn off the pump. The fuel pump rely will remin energized s long s the engine speed (CKP) signl to the ECM is 100 rpm or more. CLEAR FLOOD MODE When the elertor pedl is fully depressed (pedl position of 80% or greter) nd the engine speed is elow 400 rpm, the ECM turns off the fuel injetors. RUN MODE: OPEN AND CLOSED LOOP OPEN LOOP When the engine is first strted nd running ove 400 rpm, the system opertes in open loop. In open loop, the ECM does not use the oxygen sensor signls. Insted, it lultes the fuel injetor pulse width from the throttle position sensors, the oolnt nd intke ir temperture sensors, the MAF sensor, nd the CKP sensor. The system will sty in open loop until ll of these onditions re met: Both upstrem heted oxygen sensors (HO2S 1/1 nd HO2S 2/1) re sending vrying signls to the ECM. The engine oolnt temperture is ove 68 F (20 C). Ten seonds hve elpsed sine strt-up. Throttle position is less thn 80%. ASE COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET PAGE 9

CLOSED LOOP When the oxygen sensor, engine oolnt temperture sensor, nd time onditions re met, nd the throttle opening is less thn 80%, the system goes into losed loop. Closed loop mens tht the ECM djusts the fuel injetor pulse widths for Bnk 1 nd Bnk 2 sed on the vrying voltge signls from the upstrem oxygen sensors. An oxygen sensor signl elow 0.45 volts uses the ECM to inrese injetor pulse width. When the oxygen sensor signl rises ove 0.45 volts in response to the riher mixture, the ECM redues injetor pulse width. This feedk trims the fuel ontrol progrm tht is sed on the other sensor signls. ACCELERATION ENRICHMENT MODE During elertion, the ECM uses the inrese in mss irflow nd the rte of hnge in throttle position to lulte inresed fuel injetor pulse width. During wide open throttle opertion, the ontrol system goes into open loop mode. DECELERATION ENLEANMENT MODE During deelertion, the ECM uses the derese in mss irflow, the vehile speed vlue, nd the rte of hnge in throttle position to lulte deresed fuel injetor pulse width. FUEL CUT-OFF MODE The ECM will turn off the fuel injetors, for sfety resons, when the vehile speed rehes 110 mph, or if the engine speed exeeds 6000 rpm. OBD II SYSTEM OPERATION COMPREHENSIVE COMPONENT MONITOR The OBD II dignosti system ontinuously monitors ll engine nd trnsmission sensors nd tutors for shorts, opens, nd out-of-rnge vlues, s well s vlues tht do not logilly fit with other powertrin dt (rtionlity). On the first trip during whih the Comprehensive Component Monitor detets filure tht will result in emissions exeeding predetermined level, the ECM or TCM will store dignosti troule ode (DTC), illuminte the mlfuntion inditor lmp (MIL), nd store freeze frme. SYSTEM MONITORS The OBD II dignosti system lso tively tests some systems for proper opertion while the vehile is eing driven. Fuel ontrol nd engine misfire re heked ontinuously. Oxygen sensor response, oxygen sensor heter opertion, tlyst effiieny, EGR opertion, EVAP integrity, vrile vlve timing, nd thermostt opertion re tested one or more per trip. When ny of the System Monitors detets filure tht will result in emissions exeeding predetermined level on two onseutive trips, the ECM will store dignosti troule ode (DTC) nd illuminte the mlfuntion inditor lmp (MIL). Freeze frme dt ptured during the first of the two onseutive filures is lso stored. Fuel Control - This monitor will set DTC if the system fils to enter Closed Loop mode within 5 minutes of strtup, or the Long Term Fuel Trim is exessively high or low nytime fter the engine is wrmed up, inditing the loss of fuel ontrol. This is lwys the se when the Long Term Fuel Trim rehes its limit (+30% or -30%). Engine Misfire - This monitor uses the CKP sensor signl to ontinuously detet engine misfires, oth severe nd non-severe. If the misfire is severe enough to use tlyti onverter dmge, the MIL will link s long s the severe misfire is deteted. PAGE 10 ASE COMPOSITE VEHICLE TYPE 3 REFERENCE BOOKLET

Oxygen Sensors - This monitor heks the mximum nd minimum output voltge, s well s swithing nd response times for ll oxygen sensors. If n oxygen sensor signl remins too low or too high, swithes too slowly, or not t ll, DTC is set. Oxygen Sensor Heters - This monitor heks the urrent flow through eh oxygen sensor heter. If the urrent flow is too high or too low, DTC is set. Bttery voltge is ontinuously supplied to the oxygen sensor heters whenever the ignition swith is on. The heters re grounded through the ECM. Ctlyti Converter - This monitor ompres the signls of the two upstrem heted oxygen sensors to the signl from the downstrem heted oxygen sensor to determine the ility of tlyst to store free oxygen. If the tlyst's oxygen storge pity is suffiiently degrded, DTC is set. This monitor will only run fter the oxygen sensor heter nd oxygen sensor monitors hve run nd pssed for ll three oxygen sensors. EGR System - This monitor uses the MAP sensor signl to detet hnges in intke mnifold pressure s the EGR vlve is ommnded open nd losed. If the pressure hnges too little or too muh, DTC is set. EVAP System - This monitor first turns on the EVAP vent solenoid to lok the fresh ir supply to the EVAP nister. Next, the EVAP purge solenoid is turned on to drw slight vuum on the entire EVAP system, inluding the fuel tnk. Then the EVAP purge solenoid is turned off to sel the system. The monitor uses the Fuel Tnk (EVAP) Pressure Sensor signl to determine if the EVAP system hs ny leks. After the lek testing is ompleted, the EVAP vent solenoid is turned off to relieve the vuum. If suffiient vuum is not reted, or deys too rpidly, or does not dey quikly t the onlusion of the lek test, DTC is set. In order to run this monitor, the engine must e old (elow 86 F / 30 C) nd the fuel level must e etween ¼ nd ¾ full. Vrile Vlve Timing - This monitor ompres the desired vlve timing with the tul timing indited y the CMP sensors. If the timing is in error, or tkes too long to reh the desired vlue, DTC is set. Engine Thermostt - This monitor onfirms tht the engine wrms up fully within resonle mount of time. If the oolnt temperture remins too low for too long, DTC is set. MONITOR READINESS STATUS The monitor rediness sttus indites whether or not prtiulr OBD II dignosti monitor hs een run sine the lst time tht DTCs were lered from ECM nd TCM memory. If the monitor hs not yet run, the sttus will disply on the Sn Tool s Not Complete. If the monitor hs een run, the sttus will disply on the sn tool s Complete. This does not men tht no fults were found, only tht the dignosti monitor hs een run. Whenever DTCs re lered from memory or the ttery is disonneted, ll monitor rediness sttus inditors re reset to Not Complete. Monitor rediness sttus inditors re not needed for the Comprehensive Component, Fuel Control, nd Engine Misfire monitors euse they run ontinuously. Allow the engine to idle for 10 seonds, turn the key off, nd wit one minute. FREEZE FRAME DATA A Freeze Frme is miniture snpshot (one frme of dt) tht is utomtilly stored in the ECM/TCM memory when n emissions-relted DTC is first stored. If DTC for fuel ontrol or engine misfire is stored t lter time, the newest dt re stored nd the erlier dt is lost. All prmeter ID (PID) vlues listed under Sn Tool Dt re stored in freeze frme dt. The ECM/TCM stores only one single freeze frme reord. STORING AND CLEARING DTCS & FREEZE FRAME DATA, TURNING THE MIL ON & OFF One Trip Monitors: A filure on the first trip of one trip emissions dignosti monitor uses the ECM or TCM to immeditely store onfirmed DTC nd Freeze Frme dt, nd turn on the MIL. All Comprehensive Component Monitor fults set onfirmed DTC on one trip. Two Trip Monitors: A filure on the first trip of two trip emissions dignosti monitor uses the ECM to store pending DTC nd Freeze Frme dt. For ll monitors, if the filure reurs on the next trip during whih the monitor runs, regrdless of the engine onditions, the ECM will store onfirmed DTC nd turn on the MIL. In ddition, for the misfire nd fuel ontrol monitors, if the filure reurs on the next trip during whih the monitor runs nd where onditions re similr to those experiened when the fult first ourred (engine speed within 375 rpm, engine lod within 20%, nd sme hot/old wrm-up sttus), the ECM will store onfirmed DTC nd turn on the MIL. If the seond filure does not reur s desried ove, the pending DTC nd Freeze Frme dt re lered from memory. All of the System Monitors re two trip monitors. Engine misfire whih is severe enough to dmge the tlyti onverter is two trip monitor. However, the MIL will lwys link when the severe misfire is ourring.
