Press Release MONTESA COTA 300RR 2016 Cota 300RR Introduction Ever since its first appearance, the Montesa Cota 4RT model started a revolution in the world of trial, a discipline dominated completely by the mechanics of 2 stroke engines. These power plants are compact, highly reliable and easy to use, however they are often chastised for being highly polluting. This being the case, Montesa, in close collaboration with Honda Motor Co., and in anticipation of the emissions standards that were to be enforced in 2006, developed the Montesa Cota 4RT, an advanced trial motorcycle equipped with a compact and revolutionary 4 stroke and 4 valve engine with a PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system, which resulted in a highly efficient machine with a low level of emission pollution and a significant value in power and torque. The innovation of the motorcycle also is present in its chassis, with the adoption of an aluminium frame and a set of high quality SHOWA suspensions, known for the effective design of the rear suspension system. Surprisingly, from the very beginning, the performance of the 250cc engine has been able to compete, in theory, with the superior 2stroke engines with similar displacement. The Montesa Cota 4RT has always been recognized for its exclusive technological features, as well as for being a model of superior quality and proven liability, aspects that were clearly valued by the clients of the brand. In 2014 Montesa introduced significant novelties with the release of the Cota 4RT 260, a model that in its 2016 version has been renovated to increase even more its already excellent performance. This season, Montesa is expanding its range by releasing a completely new trial model, the spectacular Montesa Cota 300RR, an exclusive and unique race-oriented motorcycle developed for Montesa s more demanding followers.

Concept of development Up until this moment, Montesa offered a choice two very high quality models, the Cota 4RT260 and the Race Replica, their main characteristics being their advanced technology, reliability and the quality of its components. However, clients with a more race oriented preference were asking the brand for an increase in engine performance as well as a lighter model to be able to compete directly against two-stroke motorcycles. Taking into consideration these two aspects and maintaining the main characteristics of the Cota 4RT models, Montesa Honda s team worked alongside Honda Motor Co Ltd s R&D departments to create the new Cota 300RR, a race-oriented model that maintains the high quality standards of the brand. The new Cota 300RR is a motorcycle made for racing, something that can be noticed just by its name: RR (Race Ready). The model has been developed based on the proven experience inherited from racing models such as those used by Montesa s pilots in Trial Championships. In fact most of its components and technical solutions come from Eddie Karlsson and Oriol Noguera s motorcycles. Without a doubt the Cota 300RR is the mass produced model most similar to the prototypes used by Toni Bou, Takahisa Fujinami and Jaime Busto. In other words, it s an authentic racing model made available for brand followers. The development team of Cota 300RR worked hard on achieving two things: an increase in power and making the overall feel lighter. To accomplish this, the thermodynamic group is fitted with a new engine with a noticeable increase in displacement. To do this the diameter and the stroke of the piston has been increased. This, along with the new pump with more fuel flow makes the model have more torque and power, especially in the mid-ranges, whilst keeping its known response in the low. On the other hand the model has been made slimmer by reducing its weight where it s most effective. This being the case, the model has been fitted with a light TECH suspension fork made with aluminium tubes as well as new lighter mechanized aluminium wheel hubs, with this level of changes new Cota 300RR will be 2kg lighter than the Cota 4RT. On top of this, the noticeable reduction of engine braking and the repositioning of the pegs make the overall feel of the motorcycle much lighter. Another one of its improvements is the adoption of a new SHOWA shock absorber that helps the traction of the bike, or the new brake and clutch pumps which make the model have a better response and performance. The Michelin X11 tires also offer excellent traction and control. Overall, the increase in power, the reduction of the engine braking and the weight of the model, as well as the new suspensions make the model feel faster, lighter, more powerful and easier to control, essential factors in a race oriented model.

Manufacturing Process Like the Cota 4RT260 and the Race Replica, the Cota 300RR will be manufactured exclusively and for a worldwide distribution at the modern Montesa Honda facilities located at Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, in Barcelona. Worth mentioning is the fact that in an effort to ensure the preservation of the brand s high quality standards all the processes of welding, assembly of the engine, plastic injections manufacturing of the fuel tank and swingarm, as well as the aluminium frame is all done at these facilities. Design and Style The Cota 300RR s predominant color is red. The fuel tank and the mudguards are red and are combined with black details and the 4RT and Cota 300RR logos. The chassis and the covers for the clutch and the ignition are black painted giving the model a sportier look. The rims, are also anodized in black and elegantly combined with red decals. Montesa s models have always been known for the great quality finish and their excellent components that maintain their properties intact throughout out the years. This is something we have maintained in the new Cota 300RR with the incorporation of the highest quality style and decals. Engine The Cota 300RR is fitted with a completely new engine, based on those used by Montesa s pilots Eddie Karlsson and Oriol Noguera in Trial World Championship. The increase in displacement to 289cc has been achieved by increasing the diameter of the piston (from 78mm to 80mm) and of the stroke (increased by 3 mm). To make this change Montesa had to redesign the engine completely by using a new crankshaft-rod, cylinder and piston assembly. The use of these components made it necessary to modify the two semi-crankcases, mechanizing their surface to allow the mount of new components. Another new feature of the model is the adoption of a new fuel pump for the PGM-FI Electronic Fuel Injection system which allows more fuel flow. The ECU* has also been improved by including a new ignition mapping to optimize the performance of the new power plant. Although one of the benefits of the adoption of the PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system is the auto adjustment to various meteorological conditions, more demanding customers will be able to use the ECU-throttle body of the Full Power model (for exclusive competition use) which incorporates a double ignition map activated though a switch on the handlebar: Mode 1, for low grip conditions and Mode 2, the map for the maximum power. The ECU- throttle body isn t sealed, allowing the possibility to modify ignition and injection maps through a PC.

* The version of the models called Full Power (for exclusive competition use) are already equipped with all these components. The introduction of these changes can be noticed by the fact that the model has a strong power curve in all ranges, but especially in the mid ones and maintaining its excellent drivability in the low ones. Another feature where it can be noticed is the perfect connection between throttle and final transmission, a key element in professional trial and another reflection of the excellent performance of the PGM-FI Electronic Fuel Injection system. Another aspect worth highlighting is the reduction of the engine braking by incorporating a crankcase s gas decompressing system as well as a thorough work on the electronics to minimize this effect. Through this system, when closing the throttle, the engine braking is minimized making the motorcycle feel lighter and easy to control. The clutch system has been modified to fit the increase in power, including the clutch pump which has been improved to be more responsive during racing. The increase in displacement and the consequent increase in compression have also meant the inclusion of a new longer kick starter to ease the starting of the engine. All these improvements in the performance of the engine mean that the Cota 300RR can deal with areas that would be harder for the Cota 4RT260 and the Race Replica. * The versions of the Full Power models (for exclusive competition use), feature all these novelties as well as an ECU with a double ignition map activated though a switch on the handlebar. This way, the rider will be able to select a second map for lower grip conditions on top of the standard one.

Chassis One of the main objectives whilst developing the Cota 300RR was to reduce the weight of the motorcycle and make the overall feel of the model lighter, more responsive and agile. One of the main factors in achieving this is the repositioning of the foot pegs which are now 5mm lower and 5mm rearward, positioning the rider s weight towards the rear and therefore making the front train lighter. The Cota 300RR uses Michelin X11 tires, which offer an excellent combination of traction, lightness and response. The tires come equipped with light mechanized hubs made of 7075 T6 aluminium, anodized in black and with the RR logo engraved with laser. The overall weight reduction is also achieved by the use of new DID aluminium tire rims, lighter than the ones used in other models. Furthermore, the Cota 300 RR, like the Cota 4RT260 and the Race Replica continues to rely on a light and robust aluminium frame and swingarm with a proven reliability and performance. Suspensions Looking to achieve more lightness, the Cota 300RR features a TECH fork with lighter aluminium tubes. The rear suspension on the other hand is signed by Showa and includes some novelties in the hydraulics and setting which make the overall feel of the bike lighter and more stable as well as providing better traction and relieving the rider fatigue. Brakes The Cota 300RR features and new front brake which incorporates a 4 piston monoblock caliper allowing more efficiency and power when braking. The new brake and clutch pumps with red anodized covers are signed by Braktec and increase the response and performance of the model. High Quality Equipment The Montesa Cota 300RR offers high quality equipment, like the advanced digital ignition system without battery which powers, among others, the ignition system and the ignition coil. Also worth noting is the bank angle sensor which switches off the ignition when the motorcycle is laying on the ground or when it is at an inclination superior to 65º for more than 7 seconds. This device minimizes the expose to risk of the rider as well as protecting the engine, especially in situations where the engine can remain revving. The model also includes the man overboard, a useful magnet-type switch that stops the engine immediately in the case that the motorcycle was to fall. When disconnecting, the engine stops automatically as a measure of active safety.

The wheel rims keep their design of 32 spokes and the rear one the innovative system that incorporates central adjustment spokes, allowing a significant weight reduction, an easy maintenance and the mount of Tubeless tires, which again reduces the weight of the motorcycle. Also worth noticing is the aluminium Renthal Fat Bar handlebar. Racing Kit parts Just for the Cota 300RR model a highly exclusive kit of carbon HRC parts is offered. It s composed by: - Clutch cover protector - Exhaust pipe protector - A light headlight visor for exclusive racing use Sporting record Montesa has been world champion on 17 occasions. The last 9 titles have been achieved consecutively with the Cota 4RT model. Montesa has also proven its leadership as a brand in other specialties such as the World Indoor Championship and the Women s World Championship where it has obtained 13 and 7 titles respectively. The achievement of these awards proves the authority of the Montesa Cota 4RT in high level competition, where it has been the leader ever since 2005.

Montesa and trial Montesa was founded in 1945 and quickly consolidated itself as a prestigious brand that manufactured high quality motorcycles. However, in 1962 with the launching of the popular Impala, Montesa consolidated its position as one of the leading national brands. Its commercial success led Montesa to explore new motorcycle fields starting with the development of off-road vehicles, in the trial discipline first, then in cross and finally in endurance. Specifically the involvement with trial started in 1967, when the brand launched the revolutionary 250 Trial, a model that, contrary to the ones that were currently leading the market, was equipped with a 2stroke engine that quickly became popular because of its simplicity and light weight. Since then, Montesa hasn t stopped developing new trial models as emblematic as the Cota 247, the Cota 348 or the Cota 349, a model that Ulf Karlson used to proclaim himself World Champion in 1980. At the same time Honda was also working in the development of trial models, such as the sophisticated RTL260, a model developed completely by HRC and that was known for its revolutionary 4stroke engine with which Eddi Lejeune won 3 World championships from 1982 to 1984. In 1983 Honda and Montesa signed a collaboration agreement for the production of Honda models in Montesa s facilities and in 1986 the Montesa Honda S.A. society is born. In 1994 HRC participates along with Montesa Honda in the development of the Cota 314R, a model that was the turning point in the development of trial models. The Cota 314R won several World Championships and served as a basis for the first prototype of the Cota 315R with which Marc Colomer won the World Championship in 1996. Montesa consolidates its leadership in the Trial World Championship with the spectacular Dougie Lampkin who, riding the Montesa Cota 315R, obtained the World titles of 00, 01, 02, 03 leaving the one of 2004 for another Montesa rider, Takahisa Fujinami. After 5 consecutive world titles with a 2stroke engine, advancing the emissions standards that were set to begin in 2006, Honda and Montesa will develop a new model equipped with a 4stroke engine, the Cota 4RT, that debuted in the competition in 2004 even though the production model commercialization wouldn't be until 2005. From 2006 up until 2014, Montesa has won 8 consecutive world titles with the 4RT model, the last 8 having been won by the rider Toni Bou.
