This means a sample item of the majority of product ranges is to be displayed and wired to power. All fittings in ceiling displays ( boats ), columns and wall bays are connected to the main power supply via a flex and plug. That is, each fitting will have a flex and plug connected to the power board which in turn is connected to the main power supply. These guidelines provide information about the safety procedures that must be adhered to when working with in-store displays. Associates / Contractors Assist Sales Manager/Department Head in investigating electrical incidents and performing risk assessments Exercise care when working with electricity, electrical equipment and appliances especially in damp or wet conditions; Follow safe work procedures; Always switch off power to an area prior to re-globing or disconnecting/connecting display product Only complete the connection of display products where they are supplied with a wiring loom and male plug. Never complete any other form of electrical wiring unless you are a qualified electrician and it is approved by the Facilities and Maintenance Manager Identify and report electrical hazards and faulty equipment to managers Attach an out of service label to faulty equipment Assist managers in controlling risks arising from electrical equipment tasks; Use equipment provided to assist when performing electrical equipment tasks. Ensure power outlets are not overloaded. Electrical Safety Essentials All stores are fitted with safety switches (RCD s) The switchboard in every store must be clearly marked to show which area of the store is powered by which circuit to enable specific areas to be isolated. The switchboard is to be kept shut (and locked if practicable) to ensure no unauthorised access. Switchboards must be accessible. All stores are equipped with appropriate powder fire extinguishers There will be NO bare or exposed wires in the store at any time. All fittings must be fully globed at all times. Extension leads must not be used to power display fittings. Ensure there are no flexs or power boards lying across aisles or walkways where they could be a trip hazard. If doing general maintenance, or mounting light fittings, always check the other side of the fixture before drilling to check for wires If you notice any frayed, damaged or exposed wires, turn off the power to that section immediately (at the switchboard and/or GPO). Advise the National Facilities Manager or a qualified electrician. Advise all team members and mark the switchboard accordingly. There must be no debris or rubbish left in boats after works are performed and it is absolutely not permitted to use boats for storage of items. All power-boards must have an overload switch Double adaptors are not to be used. Page 3

Use of Lights are Hot warning signs to be in accordance with the Visual Merchandising standards Appropriate anchors must be used for all light fittings particularly heavy pendants mounted from ceilings and barges. The fixing of a light fitting should be able to take 4 times the weight of the fitting. Display Wiring Changes to electrical wiring are undertaken whenever display stock is to be removed, moved or replaced. Displays are either: 1. Hard Wired meaning light fittings that are wired directly into the main power supply by use of electrical terminals in a junction box. GPO s are also hard wired ie directly connected to the power supply. Our stores no longer have many hard wired fittings however, this is how many fittings will be installed in customer s homes. 2. Flex and Plug meaning a power flex that has one end connecting into the light fitting (connected by a qualified electrician) and the other connects via a 3 pin plug top into a power board or electrical outlet. 3. Flex and Plug/ Wiring loom (new method), where the display fitting is supplied with a wiring loom and male plug. This is connected into the female plug and power flex wiring loom to complete installation. 4. Combination of Flex and Plug / Hard Wired this is where one flex and plug feed a junction box in the area and from that junction box, there are multiple feeds out to multiple lights. This may happen in column displays, for example. Hard Wired Fittings When working with hard wired fittings, the following standards must ALWAYS apply - No Hard wired fittings are to be disconnected and connected to the power source by anyone other than a qualified electrician. - This means that even when a boat, bay, column or barge is disconnected from the main power source, unqualified Associates must not connect or disconnect the hard wired fittings under any circumstances only electricians may do this - Unqualified Associates may only mount the product in order to display it (but must NOT connect it to power), or remove the product from display, AFTER the power has been disconnected by a qualified electrician. Therefore the process for displaying Hard wired fittings is as follows: a. Requisition an electrician to disconnect the fitting b. Store team member may remove disconnected fitting Page 4

c. Store team member may mount new fitting d. Requisition an electrician to connect the new fitting Page 5

Before Working with Fittings that are NOT Hard Wired Before commencing any tasks associated with disconnecting or connecting fittings that connected by Flex and Plug or by Flex and Plug/Wiring Loom, the following steps MUST be completed: 1. Store team member turns off the power supply to the boat, column or bay at the switchboard 2. Lock off circuit breaker using safety lock provided (see instructions in next section) 3. Advise all other team members that disconnection work is in progress and position WORK IN PROGRESS warning signs 4. Team member selects appropriate ladder and positions it to ensure that the work can be performed safely Disconnecting A Flex and Plug Fitting The process for disconnecting flex and plug fittings is as follows: 1. Store team member locates the correct fitting flex and plug (either by visually following the flex or by gently tugging on it) 2. Team member unplugs flex and plug from power board. 3. Store team member may cut the flex as close as possible to the fitting in order to feed it through the hole and remove disconnected fitting 4. Store team member takes the now disconnected flex and plug and places it in the maintenance box A flex and plug must NEVER be left connected to power in a boat or barge after a fitting has been removed. 5. Store team member may now mount new fitting if required 6. Requisition an electrician to connect flex and plug to the new fitting, if it has not been supplied with a wiring loom, and then connect to the power board. If a wiring loom has been supplied please refer to the next section. 7. Team member notes the work performed in the store log book and asks the manager on duty to counter sign, to confirm that the work has been completed in accordance with this procedure. NOTE: When disconnecting a fitting, the flex and plug MUST be disconnected from the power board first, not the fitting. There have been instances where the flex and plug have been removed from the fitting but the flex and plug has been left connected to the power board and therefore when the power is connected at the switchboard, this is a live wire. If there is any doubt about this process, store associates should not proceed and should requisition a qualified / BLI electrician to undertake the work. Page 6

Disconnecting and Connecting A Display Fitting with Flex and Plug/ Wiring Loom The process for disconnecting flex and plug fittings is as follows: 1. Locate the correct fitting flex and plug (either by visually following the flex or by gently tugging on it) 2. Unplug the flex from power board undo the small white male/female connectors (pictured below) by releasing the clip on the side to enable the flex to be taken through the mounting hole and the fitting taken down A flex and plug must NEVER be left connected to power in a boat or barge after a fitting has been removed. If the fitting is to be displayed again elsewhere, keep the flex and plug with it. If the fitting is to be sold, see procedures detailed below. To connect a new display fitting: 1. Before commencing, visually inspect the flexs, plugs and connectors on the display fitting to ensure that the wiring is safe and properly secured. 2. Mount the fitting on the boat, feeding the flex and white male/female plug through to the top of the boat. Note: you may need to enlarge the hole on the boat to be able to insert the white plug. 3. Take the extra flex supplied and simply connect together the white male/female plugs. Then connect the 3 pin plug into the powerboard. 4. Any extra flex on the light fitting can be passed through the entry hole and secured neatly on top of the boat ensure it is clear of any other wires or sources of heat. Please do not cut off any additional flex - the flex has been deliberately left the original length for resale when necessary. 5. Remember to globe the display item before turning the power back on to the fixture. 6. When all fittings to be connected on the boat, column or bay have been completed, power can be turned back on. 7. The work performed must be recorded in the store log book and the manager on duty must counter sign, to confirm that the work has been completed in accordance with this procedure. REMEMBER - If display products have arrived in store without a flex and plug connection, Store Associates may not connect them. Only qualified electricians are permitted to connect a flex and plug to the new product before it can be plugged into the power board. Preparing an Ex-display Product for Sale If the fitting is to be sold, the flex and plug must be removed. Products must not be sold with a flex and plug. The lead with the white male plug on the product end must be cut off as close as practical to the product. Some products may have a terminal (or connector) block supplied with the product. If it is not already connected to the product, it is not necessary to wire the terminal block up to the product just ensure it is in the box. If there is no terminal block provided, ensure the Must be installed by a licensed electrician label is placed on the end of the flex. This is a requirement to meet lighting standards. Any 240V product that does not have a plug or terminal block at the end of the flex must have this new label attached prior to sale. Labels can be obtained from Spare Parts if there is not one already in the products original box. Page 8

Lock Out Tag Instructions Lock out tags have been provided to all stores to ensure the safety of all team members whilst electrical work is in progress. Tags are to be kept in the switchboard cupboard. Whenever a circuit is switched off to allow fittings to be globed, disconnected or connected, the lock out tag must be attached to the relevant circuit breaker in the switchboard. To attach the tag, 1. Turn circuit breaker off 2. Loosen off the fixing screw with a small screwdriver 3. Hook the clip over the circuit breaker switch as per photo 4. Tighten the screw to secure the tag in place 5. Using a whiteboard (non-permanent) marker complete the details on the tag To remove the tag when work is completed, 1. Loosen the fixing screw on the hook 2. Remove the tag by unclipping it from the switch 3. Erase the details from the tag and store in bottom of switchboard 4. Turn circuit breaker on Page 9

Beacon Lighting Electricians Beacon Lighting has a team of qualified electricians in most states. These electricians will in the most part be responsible for all electrical work in Beacon Lighting stores. Where a Beacon Lighting electrician is not available to undertake work in a store, the store manager may call on the assistance of approved local electricians (with reference to the Approved Electrician register on the intranet. However, it is essential that the store manager confirm that any electrician has a valid license and should speak with the Facilities & Maintenance Manager if there are any concerns. NOTE: If a store believes a member of their team to be a qualified electrician and able to perform the duties of an electrician then the following steps must be followed BEFORE that person commences any electrical work for Beacon Lighting: 1. the person s electrical license must be sighted by the store manager 2. a copy of the license must be forwarded to the HR Manager 3. Facilities & Maintenance Manager must be advised, sight the license and confirm its validity 4. A member of the Beacon Lighting Installations Team must meet with the team member to educate them about company standards and expectations to ensure compliance. Testing and Tagging All electrical plug in appliances and tools, (in accordance with a list provided by the Facilities & Maintenance Manager), need to be regularly tested and tagged according to relevant state regulations (as per AS/NZS 3000:2000). This must be done by a qualified electrician provided by BLI at the store cost, and forms part of the Beacon Lighting Safety Audit. Testing occurs annually and in accordance with the Electrical Safety Guidelines SMS.10.1 Testing and tagging of appliances must be recorded in the store log book. Installations More detailed risk assessment and safety procedures relating to working with electricity have been prepare for the Maintenance / Installations team. Globe Replacement Ensuring all light fittings are fully lit is an important merchandising standard. (See Section One Store Maintenance of our Visual Merchandising Manual) so all display fittings must have light globes fitted. All Team Members may undertake globe replacement however they must follow the procedure as follows: Page 10

1. Carefully mark the globes to be replaced with a black marker while the light fitting is illuminated 2. Turn off the circuit to that particular area at the switchboard and lock off circuit breaker using safety lock out tag provided 3. Advise all other team members that globe replacement is in progress 4. Wait 15 minutes in order for the globes to cool before handling 5. Check the general work area is clear and dry. Check your hands are dry and put on a pair of safety gloves and goggles available in store. If using a ladder, ensure you comply with our standards regarding the use of ladders. 6. Replace all marked globes 7. Advise other team members that globe replacement is complete 8. Reconnect power to display unit and at switchboard. Important Note: When re-globing large fittings such as chandeliers, it is important to work around the fitting by moving the ladder to access each side. Do not rotate the fitting. Over time, such rotations may loosen, or even un-do the suspension unit, causing the product to fall and potentially cause serious injury. Glass Disposal Used globes and other glass must be disposed of safely and to avoid injury to Associates and the third parties that handle our rubbish disposal. Therefore the correct procedure for glass disposal is as follows: o o o o o o Use a reasonably sized strong cardboard box that has been securely tape across the bottom and had the sides reinforced with tape. The box is to have Glass Only written on it. Place the box inside a plastic tub (see picture) When full, the top of the box is to be taped securely and the words Contains Glass written in large print on the top Take the box (still inside the tub so you are holding the tub, not the box) to the regular rubbish bin, and tip the sealed box in. The tub can then be taken back into the store and a new box put inside it. This procedure will ensure that the risk of injury either by shattering glass flying up, or by carrying a box of glass is minimised. Page 11

Note that safety gloves and glasses should be worn when handling broken glass to avoid injury. CFL CLEAN UP To clean up a broken CFL globe, the following steps are to be taken: 1. Put on some rubber or safety gloves 2. Gently sweep up glass fragments and place in a plastic bag 3. Use sticky tape on carpet prior to vacuuming 4. A damp cloth will pick up fine particles (do not use a cloth you would normally use for other purposes eg dishes, hand towel). We recommend you use a Chux or other disposable cloth. 5. Place the sealed plastic bag containing the debris in the rubbish NOTE: even when disposing of unbroken CFL globes, they should be wrapped in paper before throwing out. This reduces the risk of them breaking when further items are placed in the bin. Working With Electricity Training A training module covering safe work practices involving electricity in our stores is to be completed by all team members. This is available in the Beacon e-learning centre and records of completion are retained within the system. Page 12
