BIC Electric 2004: Development in Poland Choosing location Szczecin - West Pomerania Based on feasibility study - the long way around (Demex electric 2002) Not much help to get no one spoke English Very complicated administrative procedures Difficult to find help No help from authorities Now: Many choose location based on knowledge from network Different administrative procedures (than in Denmark) Easy to find help and get assistance Fine professional help from authorities (better than in Denmark) Good Danish network in North-Western Poland
Development in Poland Infrastructure: 8 hours between borders 5 hours between borders A looong time in a truck 10 hours from Jutland cheaper then internal transport in Denmark Good ferry connections still good ferry connections even better when the Femern connection comes Poor plane connections still poor connections to Goleniow, but from Berlin to the world Very bad roads in Poland highways between major cities
Development in Poland Rebuilt stable Max 512 kbit/s internet State of the art office buildings 20 Mbit/s internet
Recruitment in Poland White-collar 1:1 performance Highly educated technical and financial knowledge English-spoken Hard-working Blue-collar 1:1 performance maybe even better in Poland English-spoken (the younger generation) Skilled educate in their spare time be careful to test skills Hard-working Salary level (electricians, smiths etc.) incl. overhead pr. hour: Szczecin (NOT Warsaw + 20-40%) DKK 50 / PLN 25
A few experiences with cultural differences Money as a motivational factor More competition internally Belief in authority titles and material goods matters Status symbols matter in the hierarchy e.g. managers must have a company car Ambitious female managers In BIC Group: Office staff: PL: 6 women + 2 men /DK: 3 women + 2 men Differences maybe not that big differences
Some major advantages Help to get qualified and much of it Competitive labour (price / performance) Fast and easy access to suppliers and customers Large network of Danish companies - maybe too large From the Marketing Manager s point of view: Much lower prices on marketing materials Printing Displays Postage for direct mail cheaper than sending within Denmark Website development
