6 TRANSPORTATION (SUBWAY) http://www.visitseoul.net/en/ Riding the Subway 4 Passing through the turnstiles 1 Finding the subway station As you go through the turnstiles, scan your card over the T-money scanner Subway station signs are written in Korean, English, and other languages, so foreign tourists should be able to find them easily. The corresponding color to the subway line is also easily visible. 5 Transfer 2 Purchasing a ticket If you purchase one, you must pay a deposit of 500 won, which you will get back when you return the card at your destination. When approaching a subway stop where a subway line transfer can be made, the loudspeaker inside the subway train will indicate that by music as well as an announcement that the next stop is a transferable subway line. Also, as you are coming closer to the next stop you will notice that there are other subway line colors on the walls to show it is a transferable subway stop. To be certain, please check the subway map. 6 Getting off 3 Ticket Vending and Card Reload Device When you reach your destination, after you scan out of the turnstiles, you ll see a machine that says Deposit Refund Device. Insert your card in there, and it will refund your 500 won deposit. You can choose the English option. You will see an orange tab option for "Single Journey Ticket" on the left-side of the screen. Choose that option, and you ll come to a list of destinations.
7 TRANSPORTATION (BUS) http://www.visitseoul.net/en/ How to Ride the Bus 1 Wait at the bus stop 4 Getting off At each bus stop you ll find bus routes in Hangeul, but not necessarily in English. (It may be a good idea to take notes in Hangeul before you try to get on the bus, so that you have the names of your destinations in Korean.) You ll also usually find the bus timetables at the bus stop. Depending on the route, the buses usually come every 5-15 minutes. Before the bus approaches your stop, move towards the exit doors, and get ready to get off the bus. Sometimes people exit quickly, and if you are not near the exit doors, you may not be able to get off before they close. It is also possible that it's so crowded, the bus driver thinks everyone who needs to get off has done so. 2 Getting on the bus / paying your fare Get on the bus using the front door, and pay your fare by either scanning your T-money card or paying in cash. While you can pay your fare in coins, you cannot pay using bigger bills, like a 5,000 won, 10,000 won, or higher. If you re not using T-money or don t have your card on you, take out a 1,000 won bill and get ready to pay with that. 3 Press the buzzer to get off When the bus is approaching the stop where you d like to get off, push one of the buzzers. Most of the time, the next stop will be announced on the intercom in both Korean and English. Bus Types R Red Bus (Wide Area Line) This is an express bus that connects inner Seoul to the suburbs, making less stops than the blue bus. 8 TRANSPORTATION (TAXI) http://www.visitseoul.net/en/ Taxi Types Regular Taxis Currently, regular taxis are white and silver, but in the future all taxis will be orange. (recommended) International Taxis This taxi was specifically created for foreign tourists in Seoul who cannot speak Korean. This taxi is orange, and it has Haechi, the Seoul mascot, on the side of it. An international taxi can be used by making a reservation by calling the call center or going online, or by flagging one on the street, although there are far less international taxis than regular taxis. These taxis are marked with a sign that says "International", and they can fit up to 5 people, including the driver. You can also order a van taxi that holds up to 9 people, including the driver. Information desk - Incheon Airport Passenger Terminal Arrivals Lobby between Exits 8 and 9 (24 hrs) - Gimpo Airport International Terminal Arrivals Lobby between Exits 2 and 3 (10:00~23:30) Call center (reservations and inquiry) Navi Call (1599-8255), K-Taxi (1577-9977), N Call (1688-2255) Online reservations http://www.intltaxi.co.kr (English) Deluxe Taxis These taxis are black with a gold stripe down the sides. The price is a little higher than a regular taxi, but the service is safer. Jumbo Taxis A jumbo taxi can fit up to 8 people. This taxi is good to use when there are many people or when you have a lot of luggage. How to Take a Cab 2 Communicating with the Driver 1 Finding A Taxi Near each subway station and bus stop, you ll find a taxi stand, but you don t have to catch a cab from the stand; you can catch one yourself if you d like. Just stick your arm out and wave to the taxi, and they ll pull over if they don t already have a passenger. If you get into a cab that is not an international taxi, it may be a better idea to show your driver the name of your destination written in Hangeul. Always make sure that the driver remembers to start his meter as soon as he/she starts driving. 3 Payment Metered fares are based on distance and time traveled, and the fares vary according to taxi types. For example, a regular taxi s fare begins at KRW 2400 and a deluxe taxi s fare begins at KRW 4500. You can pay with either cash or overseas credit cards.
