Chapter 1 THE N.J. DRIVER LICENSE SYSTEM
1. Who needs a N.J. License? A. Anyone who lives in N.J. B. Anyone who moves to N.J.> 60 days 1. Or until current license expires whichever comes first 2. Vision 3. Surrender out of state 4. Proof of Identity 5. Carry license, registration and insurance
2. Changes in name or address A. name change has to be reported two weeks after the change to motor vehicle commission B. address change must be reported 1 week after the change to motor vehicle commission.
3. Stages of G.D.L. A. Permit- B. Probationary C. Basic
4. Permit-approved instructor must purchase a. 16 years old b. written-vision c. 6 hours of BTW-NJ department of ed. Or commercial driving school 1. 6 months supervised driving 2. licensed driver in NJ over 21 with at least 3 years experience-front seat 3. must display 2 decalsd. Restrictions- 1. 11:01pm-5:00am 2. passengers are limited to dependents of the permit holder and one additional person unless accompanied by a parent or guardian 3. all must wear seatbelts 4. no use of cell phones-no hand held devices
5. Probationary-without suspensions or postponements a. at least 17 years of age b. complete all permit requirements c. pass road test d. 1 year of unsupervised driving e. must display decals e. restrictions- 1. 11:01-5:00 am 2. passengers are limited to dependents of the permit holder and one additional person unless accompanied by a parent or guardian 3. can t use wireless device-no hand held games 4. all wear seat belts
6. Basic- 1. complete all probationary 2. must be at least 18 3. $100 fine or possible suspension for not abiding by GDL restrictions. 4. Over 21 3 months min supervised driving. 5. Commit offense you and instructor responsible 6. May operate a moped with a basic license or a motorcycle license 7. If permit holder is 21 no passenger or hour restrictions
7. GDL Exemptions GDL driver under 21- time restrictions lifted for work, religious related purposes, or emergencies Must have valid certification from an employer or a religious institution
8. Required Documents 1. One primary and 1 secondary document 2. Totaling 6 points 3. Cannot show more than 2 documents that are worth 1 point each 4. Must show acceptable proof of address.

License Renewal *****review chapter 10 Basic license expires every 4 years To renew it cost $24 Lost or stolen licenses cost $11 to replace Lost licenses should be reported to the police Lost permits cost $5 to replace For motorists under 17 years of age, a licensed driving instructor must apply for the replacement
10.Altering a license or showing altered license a. Loss of driving privilege b. Fine up to 1,000 c. Up to 6 months in jail 1. getting a license illegally a. Fine 200-500, jail 30-90 days 11. Under GDL remedial classes if you accumulate 4 or more points and convicted of DUI.
GDL-Option B: The Young Adult Road 1. Get Exam. Permit- Pass MVC s vision and knowledge tests 17 years old Pay required fee Obtain parent/guardian consent 2. Practice Supervised Driving- Practice with an adult, supervised driving Practice at least 6 months Observe restrictions

Practice Unsupervised Driving- Practice for at least 1 year Observe restrictions 5. Get Basic Driver License- 18 years old Complete 1 year unsupervised driving Pay required fee

Practice Supervised Driving- Practice with adult supervising driver Observe adult GDL restrictions Practice for at least 3 months 3.
