Conserving Energy Since 1946 VFM 7000 Technical Data Vortex Flowmeter

Measuring Principle The Vortex flowmeter is used for measuring the flow velocity of fluids in pipelines. The measuring principle is based on the development of a Karman Vortex shedding street in the wake of body built into the pipeline. The periodic shedding occurs first from one side and then from the other side of a bluff body (Vortexshedding body) installed perpendicular to the axis. Vortex shedding generates a so-called "Karman Vortex Street" with alternating pressure conditions whose frequency f is proportional to the flow velocity v. The non dimensional Strouhal number S (primary head constant) describes the relationship between the vortex shedding frequency f(in Hz), width b of the body and the mean flow velocity v (in m/s). f = S. v / b The flexural vibration of the vortex-shedding body is picked up in the primary head via sensors and analysed in the signal converter. Karman Vortex Street v b b The ultimate application specific flowmeter Forbes Marshall Vortex flowmeters operate on the Karman Vortex shedding street principle to measure the volumetric flowrate of gases, steam and liquids. The VFM 7000 unit consists of a VFS 7000(I) primary head and a VFC 090 flow converter with application specific software for various applications. Application Specific Models Saturated Steam Meter: VFM 7000 SSM with built-in Pt 1000 temperature sensor and measuring mass flowrate of steam with online density compensation. Condensate Flowmeter: VFM 7000 CFM with built-in Pt 1000 temperature sensor and measuring mass flowrate of steam condensate with online density compensation. Gas Flowmeter: VFM 7000 GFM with built-in Pt 1000 temperature and pressure sensors, measuring the normalized volumetric or mass flowrate of gas with online pressure, temperature and compressibility factor (PTZ) correction. Compressibility factor correction uses the Redlich- Kwong equations. Free Air Delivery Flowmeter: VFM 7000 FAD for compressed air with built-in Pt 1000 temperature and pressure sensors, measuring the normalized volumetric or mass flowrate of compressed air with online pressure, temperature and compressibility factor (PTZ) correction and facility to program the compressor motor RPM and Relative Humidity (RH) for computing the FAD. Natural Gas Meter: VFM 7000 NGM with built-in Pt 1000 temperature and pressure sensors with added facility to program the gas composition and density computation according to American Gas Association standards, AGA 8. Detailed Characterization Method is used in the computation of compressibility factor and density correction. Heat Meter: VFM 7000 HM with built-in Pt 1000 temperature sensor to directly measure the heat content of steam, hot water or chilled water with density correction. It has two separate internal totalizers one for the mass flow and the other for the heat content. A look-up table for the specific Enthalpy vs. Temperature is programed in the unit for heat/energy calculation. Net Heat Meter: VFM 7000 NHM is an extension of VFM 7000 HM with a provision for a second temperature input, 4-20 ma, from an external temperature transmitter. It directly measures the net heat imparted to the process in the case of heating using steam or hot water, and heat extracted from the process in the case of cooling using chilled water. On request, it can also support the display of the billed amount in different currencies. VFM 7000 VFM 7000 VFM 7000 GFM VFM 7000 NHM 14

Application Information Installation guidelines Inside diameter of flowmeter must be same as that of pipeline. Install flowmeter in-line with pipe axis, gaskets must not intrude into pipeline. Shut off and control elements must be downstream of outlet runs. Install a flow straightener if disturbed flow conditions exist on the inlet side. Avoid pulsating flow and vibration. For flowmetering of steam and vapors, ensure a sufficient pressure is maintained downstream of the flowmeter to avoid cavitation and condensation. Use straight inlet and outlet runs Inlet run - downstream of reducer 20 x DN* - downstream of quarter bend 20 x DN - downstream of two quarter bends 0 x DN - downstream of three quarter bends 40 x DN - downstream of valves 50 x DN Outlet run 5xDN * DN = Meter size Position of Signal Converter Housing Please specify when ordering. Standard version supplied if the position is not specified. The arrows indicate the direction of the flow. 16
