KEY FACTS: The capital of the Province of Upper Silesia (Silesian Voivodeship) The centre of the largest Polish Metropolis (Silesia Metropolis) One of the smallest but most densely populated regions in Poland Population Katowice ca 300 000 inhabitants Silesia Metropolis ca 2 mln people Silesian Voivodeship 4.6 mln people SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 2

challenges A lot of people travel everyday to work and on business into Katowice, using own private cars. It makes there is a giant traffic jam in the city almost everyday, there are problems with the parking places, with quality of air and noise pollution in the city centre. and solutions One way to reduce air pollution and noise is a sustainable transport system, including intelligent traffic system in the city, accessible public transport, green transport modes and others. SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 3

Trams......The oldest electric vehicles in Upper Silesia...since 1898...today passengers can enjoy: 200 km tram railways 24 tram lines 329 wagons SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 4

The modernization of the infrastructure of the tram and trolleybus in the Upper Silesian Agglomeration with the connected infrastructure. Project co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment The beneficiary of the project - Silesian Trams SA Partner - City of Tychy The entity authorized to incur eligible expenses - Tyskie trolleybus line Ltd. The project is divided into two sub-projects: Subproject 1 is performed by Silesian Trams SA. Investments are located at 3 tram corridors, linking the main cities of the Upper Silesian Agglomeration (Bytom, Chorzów, Katowice, Ruda Śląska, Sosnowiec and Zabrze) Subproject 2 is implemented by the City of Tychy and Tyskie trolley bus line Ltd. Investments are located in the City of Tychy. Duration of the project: 2011-2013 SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 5

The modernization of the infrastructure of the tram and trolleybus in the Upper Silesian Agglomeration with the connected infrastructure. quality objectives: improving the efficiency, comfort and reliability of the public transport system reduce noise and vibration integration of existing public transport systems and the development of the common transport policy basis for Agglomeration quantitative targets: increase the number of passengers using public transport by about 3.6 million. people a year reduction the travel time between the cities by about 5-10% improving accessibility for people with disabilities by converting stops - about 61 pcs increase the comfort of traveling through the purchase of 45 units of new rolling stock and upgrading 75 pcs trams SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 6

EVUE Project (Electric Vehicles in Urban Europe) Project implemented under URBACT II Programme The leader of the project is Westminster City Council (London). Other partners involved in the project: Lisbon, Beja, Madrid, Frankfurt, Oslo, Stockholm, Suceava, Zografou and Katowice. The purpose of this project is to learn, how cities can develop integrated and sustainable strategies to increase the using of electric vehicles. Duration of the project: 2010-2012 SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 7

EVUE Project (Electric Vehicles in Urban Europe) The purpose of project is to learn, how cities can develop integrated and sustainable strategies to increase the using of electric vehicles. This includes: Infrastructure requirements and options, especially in congested areas: e.g., charging points on street or off street, standard or rapid charging, green energy. Policy framework: incentives, local law relating to parking & congestion implications, modal shift. Marketing & Communication: especially education & public awareness raising. Amongst other, there are 2 main benefits from this project: Local Support Group of Katowice was formed and Local Action Plan was created SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 8

In June 2012, the Ministry of Economy has prepared a document entitled: Conditions of Implementation of the Integrated E-mobility System in Poland This document includes the three phases of the development of e-mobility in Poland: Phase I - current status - the current existing conditions and opportunities that do not require significant investments in material and regulatory structure of the power grid in the country. Phase II - transition state - is necessary to estimate the degree of market penetration of electric vehicles, which will need to adjust the network and production to the increased demand for energy. Phase III - target state - taking into account the commercial form of electricity with the use of smart grids and the regulatory role of automotive batteries. The purpose of this document is to develop policies and preparation of incentives or actions to facilitate growth of e-mobility in Poland. The document contains the recommendations made by the energy sector, automotive sector and local governments. SUM First Thematic Workshop Vigo, 25th October 2012 15
