Core Topics Whether you are materials engineer, a design engineer or a manufacturing engineer all costs in materials, design and manufacturing must be assessed against the savings in weight that they provide in order to meet future fuel economy standards. Critical discussions within your organizations must occur regarding the various value propositions before final decisions are made on new material selections. This forum is broken down under the following three areas of focus to assist you with those discussions: Lightweight Materials - One of the easiest ways to reduce mass is to look at alternatives to traditional steel. Materials such as Composites, Aluminum, Magnesium, Zinc and High Strength Steels each offer unique value propositions for OEMs to consider when looking to reduce mass from a vehicle. This forum provides case study presentation on these materials and their economic justification based upon a given application. Design integration - Each material offers unique challenges for a design engineer to consider. There are trade off that must be considered including: total costs, safety, durability, material interface, and DFM. This forum will present experts in designing vehicles with lighter weight materials and the various lessons learned when dealing with these considerations. Manufacturing, Joining and Fabrication - Each material offers unique challenges for a manufacturing engineer when integrating them into a vehicle. Each requires different process for fabrication, joining and manufacturing which can add cost to the production of a vehicle platform. This forum provides experts who will talk about bonding dissimilar materials, fabrication of unique materials and their trade-offs to weight reduction, and case studies on various value propositions for each process. 4 www.sae.org/events/lwf - Register by 9 August to Save!
