DACON INSEPECTION SERVICES INSPECTION TECHNOLOGY
The Problem In the area where pipelines rest on pipe supports it is a high corrosion area. Difficult and costly to inspect these support areas as the pipeline needs to be lifted. Pipeline needs to be shutdown before lifting can occur. Difficult to assess the actual extent of corrosion by visual inspection in the contact area. Until now no alternative methods existed to measure the actual remaining wall thickness at the pipe support area.
What Is Dacon Corrosion Under Support (CuS) Specifically developed for inspection of pipes and pipelines at support area. Used where conventional NDT methods are difficult or impossible to use. Highly accurate inspection tool that measures actual remaining wall thickness at pipe support areas without the need to lift off the pipe from the support. Developed by Dacon research and development team and is unique in its field. Verified results and now in wide commercial use.
CuS Benefits and Advantages Lifting Pipe To Inspect Dacon CuS Method Measurement Use UT probes to measure remaining wall thickness after lifting pipe Use specially designed system (based on UT) to measure without lifting pipeline Accuracy Measures defects to within +/- 0.3mm Measures defects to within +/- 0.3mm Shutdown Pipeline may need to be shutdown in order to safely lift prior to inspection Inspection can be performed online with no need to shut down the pipeline Mobilization May need cranes and other lifting equipment No lifting equipment required Logistics Lifting equipment required and site may need to be cleared Small 2 man team with minimal equipment Cost More expensive when lifting equipment and shutdown costs are factored in Small team with minimal mobilization costs. No shutdown costs. Cheaper and easier.
How It Works Longitudinal waves converted into shear waves Probe shoe is cut at 35 degree angle Dacon algorithm calculates Time of Flight to give remaining wall thickness Qualified and experienced UT Level 2 inspector interprets the data and gives final analysis.
DACON INSEPECTION SERVICES INSPECTION PROCESS
CuS Inspection Process Complete visual inspection to check the area to be inspected. Clean surface if necessary for excess scale and paint failure. Pipeline gets marked into 20mm sections with a pipeline number. Location transducer is used to locate possible corrosion under support. If corrosion is identified then measurement probe is used to measure remaining wall thickness. This is done by measuring each 20mm section. Process takes from 15 minutes to 30 minutes depending on support size.
Operational Parameters Pipes must be 4 or greater and have a minimum thickness of 3mm. Inspecting through paint is fine (depending on paint thickness) but coatings and insulation need to be removed. Can be used on all materials. Maximum temperature is 58 Celsius. Can not detect if the wall loss is internal or external. Guided supports cannot be inspected due to tool access. These can be scanned using location tool to give an indication only. Does not work where pipeline and support are welded together. Also cannot be used on saddle supports if welded (non welded is fine).

Report Format Test location no: P1452-10-AAA3 Under support Section no. 1-5 Remark: The average value in blue colour of UTM result at 6 o clock position was used for reference and calibration. Wall loss was found at the P1452-10-AAA3 pipe support number 3. A minimum wall thickness recorded was 6.70 mm at location 1. Inspection Conclusion Minimum thickness found at test location is 6.70 mm.
DACON INSEPECTION SERVICES Why Use Dacon CuS
Why use Dacon CuS Measures actual remaining wall thickness in pipeline wall at support area Other systems only quantify wall loss and do not give actual remaining wall thickness No need to lift off the pipeline Can be done online (no need to shutdown) Significant cost savings in logistics and shut down costs Any material and any product in pipeline Small equipment and only requires 2 man team Verified results and tried and tested system
