Enel Smart Info: consumption data at hand Chiara Martini Researcher ENEA Technical Unit for Energy Efficiency 24 th March 2015 1
Outline Background Enel smart meters The pilot project Enel Info+ An application Next steps 2 24 th March 2015
Background Enel has a share of 35% in the overall electricity retail market Enel Distribuzione is the main DSO in Italy, distributing 86% of the electricity Smart metering has a key role for consumer engagement in Directive 27/2012 In Italy, rolling-out of electricity smart meters started in 2006 and was completed in 2011 Enel has installed ~40Mln of smart meters in Europe, of which 32Mln in Italy Italy is one of the first movers in the EU, also concerning gas smart meters Enel organized the pilot project Enel Info+ using software Smart Info, conceived to make available smart meter information to consumers 3 24 th March 2015
Enel smart meters Invoices based on actual consumption Quick contract management Characteristics remote reading two-way communication interval metering remote management web portal connection Time of use tariffs More information available to consumers 4 24 th March 2015
The pilot project Enel Info+ 5 24 th March 2015
Smart Info technology Smart Info makes smart meters data available to customer interfaces is univocally associated to the meter and is independent from the supplier is Plug&Play can be associated to both the consumption and the generation meter 6 24 th March 2015
Functionalities enabled by Smart Info Absorbed power Monitoring of the maximum power days/weeks/months Current, historical and usual consumption over hours/days/months Tariff time bands notification Messages from the System Operator Customised consumption limits Instantaneous power by device 7 24 th March 2015
Customer reaction 95% declare the understanding of their own consumption has improved 95% positively judge the kit and would recommend it 70% regularly check the kit, at least weekly 60% declare having modified their consumption habits 70% actually reduced consumption by at least 2 percentage points 4% of additional energy saving if compared to similar consumers with smart meters but without Smart Info 8 24 th March 2015
An application Smart Info used to monitor energy saving from smart washing machines Energy@home proposes a system of interoperating devices and communication infrastructure for energy efficiency services Two trials implemented so far, in the Netherlands and in Italy Telecom Italia, Indesit and Enel Distribuzione were involved, together with 50 private premises in the municipalities of Fabriano and Jesi plus 20 friendly customer in Italy Technical solutions based on the smart gateway, Smart Info and smart washing machines identified and validated Residential consumers enabled for active load control and simplification of the use of dynamic electricity tariffs 9 24 th March 2015
The path towards active consumers From pilot project Enel Info+, to integrated energy saving solutions as in Energy@home trial, up to smart grid and active demand as studied in ADDRESS project 10 24 th March 2015
The way forward Which is the national strategy? Key role for smart meters in the Trasnposition Decree issued in July 2014 Rolling-out of gas smart meters to achieve the 60% in 2018 Initial plans on second generation of electricity smart meters Projects for multi-services smart meters approved in September 2014 Information campaigns could have a important role in improving consumer engagement Technologies such as Smart Info could allow to solve the obstacle constituted by smart meters location, not always inside the house 11 24 th March 2015
