1166 Service How to pack properly!? A pleasurable trip is not only a matter of things you take with you. It is also the way in which you stow the luggage on the motorcycle which has a major influence on the success of your trip. You have ticked your checklist, all your equipment is laid out. You can finally start packing. But beware: even if you have done everything correctly when choosing your equipment, there are still a few pitfalls left when stowing. It is obligatory to check your vehicle s documents before starting to pack. How high is the permitted load of your machine and how much of this weight is already taken up by the rider(s) and their complete gear? What does the luggage rack weigh, the cases and other luggage? After adding all the weight of the items to be packed together and still remaining within legal limits, then you can finally start with packing. A packing concept with no negative effects on the handling of the motorcycle is just as important for a pleasurable ride as it is for safety. Things that spring to mind instantly here, are off-the-shelf tank rucksacks which not only cause embarrassing honking of the horn but also limit the turning cycle of the machine considerably. Less obvious, but just as significant in terms of handling, is correct weight distribution. The positioning of top cases behind the rear axle full with tools and spare parts can lead to an unfavorable leverage effect as can heavy luggage rolls on the rack. It is better to stow only light equipment in the top case, and thermal mats, tent tarpaulin and fleece clothing in the
Service 1167 roll. If traveling alone, it is also a good idea to strap the luggage roll behind the driver on the seat. By selecting a position which allows sufficient movement for occasional changes in body position, then this can even create a free back rest. When using a luggage roll, cases with completely removable lids fully demonstrate their advantages. This is the only way to gain access to the contents in the case without having to remove the roll and keep strapping it back again every time. And while we are on strapping: only high quality straps or motorcyclespecific elastic systems should be used for securing luggage. Basic expanders should not be used on motorcycles as they cannot secure luggage safely. There is an old saying among motorcyclists that heavy objects belong in the tank rucksack as this is mounted so perfectly near the center of gravity. However, in case of enduros or other machines with high built tanks this is only correct in terms of the longitudinal axis. In practice, the tank rucksack often reaches astronomical heights. This makes it more like a place where light items such as a camera, spare gloves or rain wear should be kept. So where do we put the really heavy parts? The clear answer is - into the aluminum cases. And right at the bottom and in front please. Of course one does not want to transport odorintensive items such as fuel cans in the cases. Using accessory mountings, these containers can be attached to the outsides of the cases with a favorable center of gravity as well as being safely secured for traveling on tracks. Bottles, first-aid dressings and many other utensils also belong to external loads. And even the case lids can be converted to luggage compartments with easy access by using appropriate bags. A packaging concept which meets all theoretical demands but makes items difficult to find or reach is not conducive to a pleasant trip. To make sure that small items do not have to be retrieved from the depths of the aluminum cases, it is recommended to use tailor-made inner pockets for the respective panniers. These protect the luggage against chafing plus allowing easy removal of the entire contents. If the bag is also fitted with adequately sized zippers which allow generous opening on several sides, then every item is easy to access, even when using large volume cases. And when traveling, one soon learns to appreciate having things in order in the pockets. This is where additional bags and covers in different sizes and designs can prove useful, for example, for clothes, laptop plus accessories. Sensibly, the luggage is not only distributed over the machine under weight aspects, but one will also attempt to stow equipment for similar functions together. Nonetheless, there are enough reasons in travel practice to deviate from this rule. For example, it may prove absolutely impractical to stubbornly stow all tools at the bottom of a case. If one regularly needs a certain spanner to adjust the suspension if necessary, then one obviously wants to have this at the ready. Small additional bags which, depending on the model, can be attached to the handlebars, the cowling or the luggage bridge and are excellent places for stowing such frequently required accessories within easy reach. The question remains, where do we put
1168 Service all the electronic gadgets one cannot do without on travels. Cameras, tablets and Smartphones can all find room in the tank rucksack which is relatively well protected in case of accidents. Especially practical are models with a conduit for a charging cable, so that these small power guzzlers can be charged from the onboard power supply. The units themselves can be protected against impact using precisely fitting covers. For professional camera equipment, it is best to use a photo tank rucksack with a variable interior which assigns body and lenses to precisely fitting and vibration-safe positions. And not to forget, a waterproof rain hood to keep the valuable freight dry in bad weather. And when all has been stowed, it is time to go for an extensive dry run. Check whether the handling of the machine has changed, it is highly likely that the pre-tension of the suspension strut needs to be adjusted to the greater weight, and also check the tire pressure. When loading the motorcycle, one of life s guiding principles applies: trial and error. And if things do not work out at once, the only consolation is that even highly experienced globetrotters only discover optimal distribution of all equipment during the course of a prolonged trip.

1194 Camera Tank Bag This special tank bag was designed to transport your camera equipment safely and to provide quick access. In addition, we have packed it with practical features so that it can also be used independently. Therefore we have placed much emphasis on a rugged padding. An extra bottom base and additional protective cloth that can be fastened to all sides with Velcro protect your equipment. The flap is also padded. The bag opens quickly with two easy pull zips that are linked together. They open the wide flap: The camera can now be removed. The flap also features a Velcro fastener at the end so that it closes dustproof. The inside offers all standard features: The compartment can be further divided using Velcro pads. Your camera and accessories are well protected. The front pocket contains a watertight storm cover that fits perfectly. Two side pockets can take the small items and also contain the supplied straps. We would never leave our valuable camera equipment on the motorcycle even for a short break. And the camera should always be ready. The straps convert the bag into a camera backpack. The padded inner bag has several dividers for the customized organization of lenses, camera bodies and flashes. It is roomy, easily accessible and quickly removed. The zipper and the inner-bag material are dustproof and water-protected. This tank bag offers various storing possibilities: Two outside pockets with special compartments for memory cards and an additional outside front pocket for the included transparent rain cover; a tiny bag the size of a credit card inside of the top flap; another sewn-in bag for larger items; and several rubber bands for holding pens. The tank bag has a carrying handle and is fixed to the base plate with Velcro, which keeps it from moving around even on rough terrain. Even if you don t like tank bags, you can still benefit from this versatile map holder. We have developed two base plates to which the the map holder can be fixed. One base plate is a Strap- on harness that is attached to the handlebar stem and fits around the seat. It also features a cut out for the tank cap. The map holder is simply pressed on the base plate and fixes by means of the Velcro straps.
