Eurofighter Typhoon

Eurofighter Typhoon Eaton s Aerospace Product Capabilities Overview One of the world s most advanced, multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the market, the Eurofighter Typhoon is Europe s largest military collaborative programme. This aircraft is the only fighter to offer a wide-range of operational capabilities and unparalleled fleet effectiveness and careful attention to design. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a top-performance defense system designed to meet the demanding requirements of any air force in the world. As the nature of modern warfare evolves, the one capability requirement that remains constant is air superiority. And the Eurofighter Typhoon is designed to deliver that air superiority with speed and certainty. Eurofighter s two EJ200 engines provide excessive power to accelerate to Mach 1.8, close in on the target and deliver maximum energy to its active missiles on release. The aircraft then uses its high supersonic turn rate to escape from the threat zone or re-attack if necessary. Eaton is a recognized leader in the aerospace industry and is a key supplier of hydraulics, fuel, conveyance and actuation products. Eaton supplies nearly two hundred major components for each aircraft to the Eurofighter Consorta in addition to over fourteen second tier contractors. Eaton supplies over 1400 fuel and air coupling parts for Eurofighter Typhoon. The fuel system components supplied manage and control fuel from the ground refuelling coupling and in-flight refuelling probe nozzle throughout the fuel system to the vent system which include refuel/transfer control valves (servo and actuated), nonreturn valves, and a fuel transfer pump. Throughout the aircraft the flexible couplings connect the fuel pipe work built into the 3 main fuselage sections and wings. The couplings provide a simple method to connect the module pipework and includes an integral bonding system avoiding the need for separate bonding wires between the fuselage sections. Eaton also provides equipment in the external fuel tanks and the components that provide the fuel and air interface between the aircraft and fuel tanks. Each fuel tank incorporates a fuel flow proportioner to maintain the centre of gravity of the tank in addition to relief valves to maintain air and fuel pressures within their design parameters. For the environmental control system, Eaton supplies fluid conveyance pipework including high pressure/temperature flexible joints from engine air bleed to motor actuated control valves and non-return valves throughout the aircraft. The system incorporates Eaton's flexible couplings for low temperature/pressure applications. Eaton supplies hydraulic components including slide/swivel joints and hoses for flight control surfaces and brakes. In the aircraft radar cooling system, Eaton supplies a liquid pump, non-return valve and quick release couplings. Eaton has developed a pump for a water glycol cooling system for next generation aircraft radar cooling systems. Many other Eaton components are supplied to second tier contractors for the various sub-system fuel, environmental control and hydraulic actuation modules supplied by these contractors. 2 EATON Aerospace Group C5-49 April 2014

Slat Motors Eaton's leading egde slat motor is a fixed displacement, cartridge type motor that is integrated into the slat power drive unit. It operates up to 27580 kpa (4000 psi) and is selected to lower and raise the leading edge slat, to provide additional aircraft lift at take off, landing and when required in flight. The motor provides efficient conversion of aircraft hydraulic power, to rotary motion, which in turn operates the slat surface via a ballscrew actuator. Gun Drive Motors The gun drive motor is a fixed displacement speed controlled hydraulic motor. It is a highly integrated package, incorporating servo valve, solenoid valve, flow fuse and a pressure off brake. The motor is utilised on the Eurofighter Typhoon to drive the linkless ammunition feed mechanism for the aircraft cannon. It operates up to 27580 kpa (4000 psi) and over 9000 rpm to provide fast response and accurate control. Fuel Transfer Pump The fuel transfer pump is fitted in the rear wing and is either partially or fully submerged. The pump incorporates a 3-phase AC motor to provide fuel flow of up to 1 kg/s at a working pressure of 414 kpa (60 psi). The unit incoporates thermal protection devices and a pressure switch to indicate pump failure. The inlet has a mesh filter designed to ensure maximum flow and pressure requirements are maintained even when blocked up to 50% of the screen area. The pump allows fuel transfer from wing tanks to the fuselage tanks and tansfer fuel to the Eaton supplied refuel/defuel coupling to facilate defuelling of the aircraft. In-Flight Refuelling (IFR) Probe Nozzle The IFR probe nozzle incoporates an Eaton supplied MA2 nozzle and a weak link with an emergency shut-off valve. The MA2 nozzle is compatible for use with drogue reception couplings used by most tankers. The weak link allows the Typhoon aircraft to be safely refuelled and is designed to fail at predetermined loads outside of the normal operating limits of the aircraft. In the event of failure, the shut-off valve immediately stops fuel flow from the tanker reception coupling and from damaging the receiver aircraft. Fuel Flow Proportioner The proportioner is located in the supersonic external fuel tank. The mechanical device is designed for use during refuel and transfer of fuel to ensure the centre of gravity in the tank is maintained. The flow of fuel through the device is the motive force to operate the proportioning mechanism. Fuel Vent Package This package is an inward/outward vent valve that incorporates a double flap non-return valve, actuated flap bypass using the Mk 9 actuator and two pressure regulating valves. The unit supplies fuel tanks with ram air, maintains positive pressure in the fuel tanks and prevents tank over-pressurisation under certain manoeuvres and procedures. Pressure Refuelling/Defuelling Coupling This coupling facilitates pressure ground refuelling from a bowser. It is fitted with a standard 2.5 inch flange to meet MS24484. The unit has also been designed to meet MS29514, MS29515, MS29520 and MS29525. The valve comprises of a poppet type shut-off valve which is opened by the bowser nozzle. The open valve actuates an electrical switch indicating to the aircraft fuel management system that refuelling/defuelling may start. Refuel Shut-Off Valve The main function of the refuel shut-off valve is to control the flow of fuel during ground or air to air refuelling to prevent overfilling. The valves are activated using a solenoid servo valve and once energized, fuel flow will open the valve at a controlled rate. The valve solenoid will be deactivated once the fuel has reached a predetermined level from sensors located in the tank. The design of the valve allows a controlled shut-off rate to prevent pressure surges in the system. The use of a cast body allows the complicated profile to meet the strict mass requirements. 4 EATON Aerospace Group C5-49 April 2014

Self-Sealing Couplings The couplings form part of the hydraulic system. Three sizes are designed for connection with aircraft equipment. The aircraft equipment can easily be removed and replaced without fluid loss of the hydraulic system. The design incoporates a multi-start screw format with a positive lock mechism to prevent inadvertant disconnection. The devices enable disconnection of the equipment within 1-1/4 turns of the sleeve of the female coupling. Quick Release Self-Sealing Couplings These couplings are designed to allow aircraft equipment to be removed quick and easily without fluid loss in the system. The couplings are designed with a poppet type sealing mechanism and locking device that prevents inadvertant disconnection. Two types are fitted, an inline device and a flange mounted device. Fuel/Air Couplings The fuel/air couplings are fitted to the fuel and vent systems. The couplings are used to connect metal pipes in aluminium alloy and titanium materials from 25mm to 63mm. The design incorporates a proprietary seal design and integral bonding to avoid the use of bonding jumpers. The flanges can be welded or swaged onto aircraft pipework and the completed pipes can easily be assembled on aircraft. The design includes a dual locking feature. In some installations a double barrier design is used which provides a double sealing arrangement for extra sealing security. Liquid Ground Connection This device comprises two self-sealing couplings and allow connection of the liquid cooling system to a ground supply trolley with compatible hose connections. The two couplings provide supply and return of coolant to and from the ground trolley. The unit is designed for use to work with fluids to D.T.D. 900/4931and MIL-C-87252. Flexible Couplings Lightweight Gimbals High Pressure Gimbals Liquid Pump Flexible couplings allow adjoining pipes in the ECS to be connected to allow angular and longitudinal movement. Couplings are supplied from 25 mm to 75 mm (.98 to 2.95 in)sizes and also provide integral bonding negating the need for bonding jumpers. The couplings provide two independent locking mechanisms and offer a light-weight solution to join low temperature and pressure pipes. The couplings allow pipe assemblies to be easily fitted and removed on aircraft without welding or swaging. The Eurofighter Typhoon ECS is fitted with flexible joints (gimbals) ranging from 25 mm to 75 mm (.98 to 2.95 in). The joints provide an air tight seal between pipe runs to accommodate angular movement upto +/- 4 from nominal. The units are designed to work in low temperature and pressure nominally 150 C (302 F) and 585 kpa (84 psi) respectively. High pressure gimbals are designed for use in high temperature/pressure engine air bleed systems to allow flexibility in aircaft pipe installations. The gimbals are welded at one or both ends to the pipework with variants fitted with Eaton flanges to allow pipes to easily be fitted or replaced on aircraft. Gimbals are fitted in sizes from 25 mm to 75 mm (.98 to 2.95 in). The pump is powered from the aircraft alternating current supply to circulate cooling fluid in the radar system. It is designed to work with fluids to D.T.D. 900/4931and MIL-C-87252. The pump is self-bleeding and incorporates a non-return valve to prevent reverse flow. EATON Aerospace Group C5-49 April 2014 5

Mk 9 Type Actuated Valves Mk 9 type actuated valves are produced in several configurations namely ball, butterfly or visor type shut-off valves. The valves are designed to work in fuel and air systems. Double Flap Non-Return/ Flow Restrictor Valves Double flap non-return valves are used in several locations in both fuel and air systems. The valves prevent back flow of fluids. Variants of the valve include a specifically dimensioned orifice that controls the back flow of fluids. Thermal Relief Valve The thermal relief valve is a simple spring operated device used to relieve fuel pressure due to thermal expansion of fuel. It is designed to remain closed during normal fuel transfers avoiding unnecessary fuel leakage through the valve. High Pressure Maintenance Free Accumulator (HPMFA) These accumulators are precharged with either nitrogen or helium and are operating with either 20685kPa (3000psi) of hydraulic fluid. Located in various areas of the Eurofighter, the accumulators are part of the hydraulic system of the aircraft. In addition to dampening the pulsations of the pumps and absorbing the pressure spikes which are inerrant to any hydraulic circuit, they also respond to the instantaneous flow demands that the system is not able to supply. The accumulators are also primarily used to maintain the brakes of the aircraft during parking mode. Seals Carbon ring face seals are located in various systems of the aircraft, such as engine lubrication or radar (POD). Their purpose is to ensure a dynamic sealing of the fluid circuit at interface between rotating and static parts as well as static sealing when system is not operating. Brush Seals Eaton's brush seals reduce engine gas path leakage by 20 to 30% over labyrinth seals. Eaton supplies brush seals to Rolls Royce for the Eurojet EJ200 engine. Fuel Hose Assemblies Eaton s fire sleeved hose style assemblies are used to transport fuel from the off-take port to the digital engine control unit for cooling purposes. Hose Assemblies & 3900 Series Couplings The Eurofighter radar cooling system incorporates Eaton's 3900 series coupling and AE645 hose, which is a one-hand operation self-sealing quick-disconnect coupling used extensively where low pressure drops are required. The 3900 series coupling eliminates spillage, leakage, or spraying during connection by employing a unique mechanical pull-home valving. 6 EATON Aerospace Group C5-49 April 2014

Chip Detectors Eaton's chip detectors are widely used to provide early failure detection in the lube systems of aircraft engines, transmissions and auxiliary power units, and, to a lesser extent, in commercial or military gas turbine engine lube systems. They consist of a magnet surrounded by two closely spaced conductive pole shoes that are insulated from each other. Ferrous debris particles, captured by the magnet, eventually bridge the pole shoe gap, completing a conductive circuit similar to an electric switch. Prismalite Sight Gauge Eaton's sight gauges are available in many configurations to meet specialized level viewing needs. In addition to the conventional viewing glass, a high-contrast design provides superior readability for all fluids. Colorless or colored fluids are easily visible regardless of ambient light. This is made possible by a series of refraction grooves that allows the lens surface to reflect more than 90% of the incident light vs. 30-40% with conventional gauges. Flexible Fuel Inlet Ducts The Eurofighter fuel inlet duct is a 50 mm (1.96 in) diameter aluminum tube assembly that allows for 18 degrees of angular and +/- 26mm longitudinal movement. It employs a pressure balance slip tube to prevent end loads due to fluid system pressure. This movement allows for engine removal, thermal growth, in-flight flexure, installation tolerances, and engine displacement should an engine mount fail. The duct is rated for all fuel system pressures and temperature ranges of -54 C (-65 F) to 129 C (265 F). It connects to the airframe flapper valve connector. Flexible Fuel Ducts The flexible fuel ducts are 50 mm (1.96 in) diameter aluminium tube assemblies that allow for ± 3 degrees angular and ± 5mm longitudinal movement. They include pressure balanced slip tubes to prevent end loads due to fuel system pressure. They are used for fuel distribution from the inflight refueling probe to the internal tanks and for distribution of fuel between the tanks. V-Band Clamps & Machined Flanges Eaton clamps and flanges are used to connect and seal ECS ducts and pipes as well as the reservoir. They meet functional requirements with optimized weight designs. Slide & Swivel Joints A range of slide and swivel joints are manufactured in titanium and replace flexible hoses saving space and weight and the risk of fraying and kinking. These units are used in the hydraulic system at working pressures of up to 34475 kpa (5000 psi). Swivel joints allow 360 degree single plane rotation (banjo type) while slide and swivel joints allow axial movement and are also pressure balanced. Various end terminations are supplied including bulkhead fittings, threaded fittings to EN standards and also for hose crimping. EATON Aerospace Group C5-49 April 2014 7
