ober 9, 2017 Sentiment from the Auction Lanes Our editors and personnel attend about 60 auctions every week across the country to provide key insights: The clean, older model vehicle is always very desirable but it seems that dealers are putting a premium on them more so now than ever. Rick in FL A large quantity buyer relayed that the expected buying frenzy after the Texas hurricane has not been as robust to date as had been expected. Could be around the corner. Tim from TX There is a shortage of quality, front line ready vehicles so when they do come through the auction they fetch a premium. The values on the average or below condition vehicles are in line with a typical fall market. Richard in WI The post Labor Day sales have been rather slow here. A bi-product of the low auction inventory is a reduction in bidder numbers. Frank in AZ All in all less expensive trucks and SUVs were selling well. Higher dollar trucks, SUVs and passenger cars are more hit or miss. Andrew in GA Black Book Retention Index Updated with ember Data Source: Black Book Visual Analytics The Black Book Retention Index increased 1.1% to 113.9 from 112.6 in the previous month. The replacement process began in ember, resulting in significant month-over-month increases within the Index. SPECIALTY MARKETS: COLLECTIBLE CARS ober 9, 2017 Domestic and International Auctions Continue to Thrive Even against the backdrop of the twin hurricanes that devastated the Southern United States and Caribbean last month, several auctions recorded very impressive sales totals. More than 700 automobiles and 250 lots of memorabilia were offered, with a sell through rate of 79%. RM Sotheby s London sale, held at Battersea Evolution, was a small, yet successful, auction, with nearly $10,000,000 in total sales and a 56% sell through, featuring primarily high-end European exotics. RM Sotheby s Ferrari Leggenda e Passione auction, held, of course, in anello, Italy, was a smashing success, with sales totaling in excess of $75,000,000 and achieving a 92.5% sell through rate. Mecum s Dallas sale, which featured vehicles from ten different significant private collections, saw sales reach $22,200,000 with an impressive sell through rate of over 70% (610 sold of 865 units offered). In fact, the values of towables are at their highest level ever, and motorized are the highest they ve been since 2010. This analysis includes very little sales data from after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall, so we ll have to wait until next time to see what effects they had on supply, demand, and values. SPECIALTY MARKETS: POWERSPORTS ober 9, 2017 Powersports ket Continues Downward Trend ober is another down month in the Powersports market. All year long we have seen sustained pricing weakness across all vehicle segments and most models we cover, and it appears this is going to continue as we head into the fall. Scott Yarbrough, Motorcycle & Powersports Editor Motorcycle & Powersports Percent Changes ember to ober 2017 1.0% 0.0% 0.7% -1.0% -2.0% -1.4% -1.5% -1.7% -1.4% -2.2% -0.5% -1.6% -3.0% -4.0% -5.0% -6.0% -4.5% -5.3% Scooters and Cruisers see the biggest drops this month, but not reflected in the numbers above is that among the Cruisers, the metric models dropped by larger amounts than their domestic counterparts. Also of note is that the 1 to 3 year old bikes dropped much more precipitously than the older models. Utility Vehicles are still underperforming compared to previous years, dropping a relatively small 0.5% during a time when we would historically expect to see gains in value. Snowmobiles have finally begun to show a little life, but the volume moving through the auctions is still extremely small at this point. As winter draws near, these units should pick up in both volume and pricing. 5
Monthly Change SPECIALTY MARKETS: HEAVY DUTY ober 9, 2017 Depreciation in the Over the Road and Regional Segments Appears to be Leveling off There are additional factors to consider in the monthly wholesale value movement calculation for Heavy Duty Truck values showing up this Fall. Charles Cathey, Editor Heavy Duty Truck Data For the Late Models we report on, as well as 2013 and 2014 Model Years, the Over the Road and Regional Segments there seems to be a leveling off in depreciation. Lower mileage and better condition trucks at auctions are major reasons. In addition, buyers are realizing they need to upgrade, and are now not letting good spec late model road tractors get away from them over a couple of thousand dollars. For Commercial Trailers, values are dropping a little harder, as their availability and value changes most always run several months or possibly a year behind the trucks that pull them. $0 -$200 -$400 -$600 -$800 -$1,000 -$1,200 -$1,400 -$1,600 Average Wholesale Value Changes (ket) Construction/Vocational Over the Road Trucks & Tractors Regional Tractors MODEL DATE Value $ Change % Change Value $ Change % Change Value $ Change % Change YEARS 10/01/17 90,714-723 -0.8% 73,490-833 -1.1% 64,561-570 -0.9% 2015-2016 09/01/17 91,287-391 -0.4% 74,323-859 -1.1% 64,274-699 -1.1% 2015-2016 2015-2016 HD Construction/Vocational segment dropped an average of $723 (0.8%) in ember compared to the average decline of $391 (0.4%) in ust. 2015-2016 HD Over the Road Tractor segment dropped an average of $833 (1.1%) in ember compared to the average drop of $859 (1.1%) in ust. 2015-2016 HD Regional Tractor segment dropped an average of $570 (0.9%) in ember compared to the average depreciation of $699 (1.1%) in ust. SPECIALTY MARKETS: MEDIUM DUTY ober 9, 2017 Prices Continue to Fall But at a Slower Pace Than in Recent Years Prices at auction continue to slowly drop. Josh Giles, Senior Truck Editor Overall, Medium Duty units continue to depreciate as we welcome the fall season. However, this segment is not dropping as fast as it has in recent years. In ember, Late Model units (2015-2016) depreciated an average of $332 (0.7%). This is less than the drop we saw in ember of 2016 when this segment dropped an average of $504 (1.1%) and in ember of 2015 when this segment dropped $644 (1.4%). The Older Year Models (2007-2014) dropped an average of $167 (0.8%) last month. However, in ember of 2016 this segment dropped an average of $280 (1.4%) and $349 (1.7%) in ember of 2015. These units are so vital to our everyday life, from construction to delivery units. Their popularity will continue to grow as the demand for delivery units grows and more as more fuel efficient units are introduced into the market as an added way for fleets to save on operating costs. Hopefully, this stabling trend will continue and help offset some of the increasing fuel prices we are seeing.
